The 2A (between the royals) is usually not released for a while. This lets whomever books the royal have the opportunity to book the connector. I was able to snag this room a few years back by stalking the website
They apparently do the same thing with the two family staterooms that are attached to the royals. I had to call them to check availablility, then have them release it so that my travel agent could book it for us.
If you do some strategic booking, you can add that stateroom onto 1A for not so much extra (ie, 2 in 1A, everyone else in the family stateroom -- it doesn't matter where anyone actually sleeps). We moved 3. As I recall, adding that stateroom on a 7 night cruise only added $2k (compared to putting all 5 in 1A, which is fantastic on the Magic/Wonder ships, but is definitely not fantastic on the Fantasy when the children we're bringing are 21/17/17).
