Ontario might have hit the peak of COVID 19

Did they mention anything about possibly being able to visit one other household as NB has done? That is the most important to me right now as i'd like to start visiting my Mom, who lives alone, as soon as possible. I can hear in her voice that this is really starting to wear on her.

Me too! My sister is like a second mom to my kids and it's so hard they can't see her. plus video chats with her make them cry because they want to cuddle. Today wasn't a good day (fine now but horrible morning) and there were a lot of tears :(

Before all of this, every Saturday night DH's mom came over for dinner, dessert and tv time. It will be nice to get back to that as she lives by herself as well.

All very true. I work in the Social Services department for a Regional Government - not in LTC. I can though without hesitation add that there needs to be better ongoing training, some of it mandatory public health, other training should be pursuant to the renewal of the licence for the home.
A shocking fact came out of a Ford briefing last week from the Minister of Seniors & LTC

Of all the homes in the Province 200 plus - only 9 licensing inspections were done in 2019 😳😤! Nine. When the Minister was asked outright by a reporter about the number - she did acknowledge it and said they have been working to revamp their system since taking office and it got away on them. She promised better going forward... Every Childcare centre in this province is visited (spot checked) annually and licenses are pulled for not meeting the Act governing Childcare — it should be no different in LTC homes.

No wonder the homes find themselves in such a mess with this pandemic.

LOL
Revamping their system since they came to office...according to a CBC news article they were cut drastically since taking office in 2018 .....

"CBC News reviewed inspection reports from the last five years for all long-term care homes in the province and found that while most received a comprehensive resident quality inspection in 2015, 2016 and 2017, the number dropped to just over half in 2018 and just nine last year."

Anyhoo, it's definately a system that needs fixing. My dh works in a LTC home. Hopefully some positive changes come out after all of this.

Over the past 25 years, my work has occasionally taken me into assisted care and seniors living centres. Every time I entered, the smell of urine, bleach and unchanged adult diapers has hit me once I entered the front doors. I have spoken with clients, mostly women, who were constantly side eye'ing the men roaming the halls. They wouldn't tell me what was wrong but, as a woman, it didn't take much to realize these women were concerned for their personal safety. I swore I would never leave my parents in these homes. And I swore I would never be put here. As the years have passed, many of my friends and childhood friends have found themselves in the tough spot of paying for their parents to live in assisted living centres. There are many reasons: Dad in his 70s with Alhzheimers and physically threatening Mom, Mom with dementia and kids can't physically mind her while working full time, etc. I now understand why adult kids turn to these centres. Most of these places cost a fortune and are a last resort for adult children who fear that their own marriages and jobs won't survive bringing Mom and Dad into the house. It's time the media, and the provincial government, take a hard look at these centres. I still won't place my parents in one. I will never live in one. I'm 50 yrs old. I still hope I can say this 10 or 20 years down the road. But I really pray these assisted living centres are transformed in the next few yrs and become positive and safe places for our parents. And for us.

If you don't mind my asking, since you mentioned your DH works in one of the homes, and because the front line staff have the best knowledge of issues, has he ever mentioned things he'd like to see fixed, changed or eliminated that might make for a better system, both for the patients and the caregivers?

Of course, but then isn't that always the way - the people not in management know how to run things better? They think?? lol But yes, many times he wonders why they do this or that, or grumbles about money waste.

Yeah I think July is the earliest we'll see any sort of mass public gathering like a concert or sporting event or amusement park.
My guess is no mass gatherings for entire summer. Toronto has already cancelled Caribana and that’s not until August.

New Brunswick cancelled all concerts and events for the rest of the year. I'm expecting the same here.

They just (finally?) can celled Bluesfest (early July) in Ottawa. To be honest I thought it had already been cancelled. But any way, apparently there won't be any permits given until July at the earliest, and I suspect they won't for the summer (like Quebec and other provinces).

Yeah that is more likely than what I said.

I would love to see something in July but that comes from my heart. My mind says late August/early September. I still do think that it will be something like zoos that open first though.

They have put the grape and wine festival on hold for now here in Niagara. That's not til September. Doubt Wonderland is opening this summer.

I was hopeful for Wonderland as I have a season pass that includes Cedar Point. Its doubtful I will going to either this summer.

Just doing the math on NS's cases:

Total overall positive: 935
Total recovered: 529
Total deaths: 28
Total LTC staff: 97
Total LTC residents: 227
Current positive community spread: 54

The LTC numbers are pretty much entirely Northwood Centre. It will be interesting to see what is recommended after the Victoria Day weekend (schools are closed until then, for now). Hopefully NS can continue to decrease in the coming weeks. Unfortunately, the virus will have to run its course through Northwood. Praying that the new tactics implemented will drastically help.
