We are looking to fly from Minnesota to Orlando Jan or Feb 2016. We were thinking about renting a car and driving home, but the 1 way car rentals are a lot higher versus just renting a car while in Orlando and returning there. Any options for a more reasonable 1 way rental from Orlando to Minnesota?

It's more expensive because you are taking a car from a busy rental area to a not so busy rental area. It would be cheaper to get a one way rental to Orlando and fly back.

One way car rentals are always very expensive. But it's way more expensive to take a car from where they need a larger fleet and move it to where they need a smaller fleet. If you're traveling in the spring, you might get lucky and get a good rate if you hit at the exact time they need to move their fleet north.

Have you considered driving down and flying back. It may save you quite a bit of money.

Thank you both for your responses. I looked just a bit at the option of driving down and flying back and it seems just a bit cheaper but will continue to research this option too.

I found a great deal for our one way trip out of Orlando and back to Michigan. I am picking up a 12 passenger van from budget on June 7th at the doubletree downtown disney and dropping it off June 18th at the Grand Rapids, MI airport and it's $114.00 total. Right now they are having a 9.99 a day for one ways out of Florida. I also used a $40 coupon off 10 day rental.

So, keep checking for deals!!

This is a seasonal thing. Right now, the car rental companies need to get the cars out of FL and up north. OP is looking for Jan/Feb and won't find that deal.

OP - it's too early to start looking for a 2016 car rental. When it gets to be 3-6 months out, start checking for deals. Mousesavers.com is a good resorce. If you have Costco membership, check them too. Keep canceling and rebooking as prices drop.

I was just trying to point out it's not impossible to find a deal on one way rentals out of Florida like others have suggested.

I hear you on the one way rentals costing a small fortune.

I need a one way from NJ to central FL this June which is the wrong way for the great deals. What i found is there are some codes that give you cheap daily rates, but don't have unlimited mileage. Using one of those my 3 day rental is $36 and mileage at 40 cents per mile or about $480 so $516 all in. This was the cheapest way I could price it as all of the unlimited mileage options were in the $1200 range. One other thing in renting is to pickup off airport if possible so you save on the airport taxes and fees that are in place to make visitors pay for the infrastructure. MCO pickup is about $25 a day in fees and off airport with the same company is about $8 a day.

I have considered what my time is worth and looked at flying to MCO for $80 and renting a car for $10 a day and driving to NJ then to Orlando, then back to somewhere in the southern tier that qualifies for the cheap one way rates and then fly back to MCO, but the extra 3 days in the car plus gas and tolls plus the flights don't really save me much over just paying the one way fee.

Our three day minivan rentals for the way down are high. I got 2 vans from National for 3 days $326.00 each. Which isn't bad...considering. But paying 114.00 for 10 days on the 12 passenger is making it alot harder to stomach!

It's going to be impossible to find a good deal like that in Jan/Feb which is what the OP asked about. The deals to take cars OUT of Florida will be May/June time frame and taking cars TO Florida will be October/November (maybe September).

I think you misunderstood. Folks weren't saying that you never could find this deal, as a matter of fact a PP talked about a fleet repositioning opportunity. What folks are saying is that you are not going to find that kind of deal out of Orlando in Jan/Feb. They need the fleet in Florida
