Earlier this evening I opened the back door, hubby was on the deck just back from a run and I was saying something to him when one of our cats darted thru my legs and out the door! I tried to catch her and she ran up the driveway,
dh tried to catch her but she took off like a bat outta heck!! Like she just wanted out.
We searched for her but we live in the woods she could be anywhere.

She is an indoor cat we got her from the animal shelter 6 years ago.
I feel so sad, it's cold out and she is out there.
It's been 4 hours.

I even went out in the car and searched. We combed the streets on foot too.
I keep hoping she will come back. The kids are so upset
:sad1:

Awww.. I bet she'll come back.. Just keeping looking out there and calling her name and make the kitty noise..- If you have an outdoor light, keep it on.. Also, does your kitty respond to the sound of you pouring cat food from a bag - or the sound of the can opener going? If it's dry food that you use, stand outside calling her while shaking the bag and making the "kitty" noise...

I sure hope she comes back soon so you can get some rest..

Oh dear, this has happened to us :( Two things:

First if you have an iPhone or iPod they have an app that makes animal noises. One of them is a kitten noise. This is how we actually first caught our little kitty - she was a skittish stray but ran right over to see what was on DS's iPod LOL

Second, you have kids USE em! LOL When ours got out I spent over 4 hours combing the house (didn't know for sure she was out), walking around the yard and calling her, putting out food/treats.........nothing. The kids came home and here she came. They worry the snot out of her but she must like them more than she likes me (even though I feed them and clean the litterbox, hmph!) Maybe if they go out and make noise she will pop up.

So sorry, I know it makes you nuts worrying about them!

In the morning, make sure no one starts a car without honking the horn. Car engines are warm, and cats will sleep in the engine compartment on cold nights.

Try going outside in the dark and sitting quietly.

Softly call her name and listen carefully for any response.

She might not have gone far but she might be scared of all the strangeness outside.

Awww....I know how awful you must feel. I bet if you don't see her tonight, she'll be hanging around outside the house in the morning.

Our cat is an indoor cat, too, and we got him about 7 years ago from the local shelter. He is a real sweetheart and just a big baby. We had the same thing happen a few years ago. Somehow he managed to dash outside one evening when a door was opened. We searched all around our house and couldn't find him anywhere. One section of our yard backs up to woods, so we were really worried about him being out all night.

Early the following morning, I heard meowing and found our kitty under our back porch. I'm betting he spent the night there and never really strayed too far.

Once in awhile, he will still run out outside if a door is opened, but we don't worry about him, because he always runs a few feet and then just stands there like, "Now what do I do?" He then looks back at us and patiently waits to be picked up and taken back inside.:rotfl:

I bet your kitty isn't very far away and she'll return in the morning, if not sooner.

Put food and water out on your porch and anything that has the smell of your other cat.

We recently lost one of our fur babies. The cat that we were fostering tore a hole in the bathroom window screen and they both got out. We set a humane trap out and the foster was trapped late that night. After three weeks and no sign of the other one, we had basically given up hope and figured that someone else had him. We recently have seen him in our yard and the neighbors yard and the woods behind our house, but have not been able to trap him. We have been setting food and water out for him. We wasa stray originally and we had him for about 7 months before he got out.

If you can get a hold of a humane trap, you might be able to catch her. See if a local pet organization has one that you can use. She is probably scared and more than likely close in the area. Good luck & I will be praying that she gets home safely.

So sorry to hear this! But I just wanted to say, don't give up hope. I lost my wonderful cat, Shadow, who at the time I had had for about 13 years. I searched, put up posters, asked everyone I saw, and frequented the local animal shelters. Over two months later, I had finally given up hope. I wanted to do something to commemorate her, so I got her name tattooed on my arm (at 23, that seemed like the thing to do ). Well, the very next day I got home and guess who was outside my door? My now very skinny and hungry cat!!!! She is now 18 years old and still my loving kitty!

Also, keep in mind that cats are good at finding their way back home. I've always had cats that spend part-time outdoors, and we always moved a lot. All I do is keep them inside for two weeks, and then they know a place well enough to go exploring on their own. So your cat may be scared, but will likely find his way home when he gets hungry.

Provide some sort of closed box or shelter so she can get in out of the rain or cold wind. Keep it close to the house. Line it with blankets or hay for insulation. It might keep her from straying off looking for shelter.

I agree with putting out a box with a blanket and food/water for your kitty. The same thing happened with my exclusively indoor kitty about 7 years ago and he showed up at the doorwall crying the next day. Don't underestimate your kitty's ability to find his/her way home.

Is your cat spayed/ neutered? If not, and if you find your cat, please have this done immediately as it could have been a factor in your cat's disappearance, because the inherent desire to find a mate is incredibly strong.

I am sending good vibes to you tonight, I know how hard it is.

Our kitty did this a few years back. He also was an indoor kitty that used to love to sleep on our front screened in porch. One day a delivery guy left the door opened and Buddy must have been slipped out without us knowing. We were frantic. My husband, dd, and I were searching all night for him in and out. Our friend is a cop and even drove his patrol car around the neighborhood with his big light aimed in the bushes. Nothing :( We propped open the porch door and put out his food and water and blanket. Woke in the am..food was still there - now we are really getting worried. I went in the backyard and started calling his name and I thought I heard a faint meow. I followed it and it turned out our elderly next store neighbor accidently locked him in his garage all night!! He didn't have his hearing aid on so he couldn't hear him. We ran to have him open his garage door, and there was Buddy sitting on his car's roof crying. My neighbor felt so bad for locking him in, but we kept on telling him it was ok because Buddy was safe all night! Long story short...check your neighbors garages or anything else they could get trapped in. Good luck in finding your baby..

The cat will probably come back. I would leave food out for him and maybe get a humane trap. I think you can borrow one from the animal shelter(they will probably want a CC number for collateral) You should also let any neighbors know the cat is missing, in case they don't know who it belongs to. One of mine was gone for over a week. I finally put missing flyers onto everyone's mailbox within a mile. The cat was only 6 houses away, taken in by a neighbor who didn't want her to get hit by a car.

Someone also suggested to another person who lost their cat to put the other cat in a carrier and bring him near where the cat disappeared(edge of the woods) Maybe the cat would come if he heard his "friend's" voice. You should have some stinky food, like tuna as well to entice it to come to you. Cats can be skittish when they have been out in the wild.

Good luck!

Did your kitty come home? Sure hope so..

This thread was the first thing I thought of this morning. I hope your kitty came back home, or will come home soon.

Thank you all for your good thoughts and sharing your stories. I have hope she may find her way back.
as of right now she is still missing, but you have given me some good ideas, I am going to see about getting a trap. and I will set up a shelter and some food out there too.

I would probably have to bring the food in tonight though because we do sometimes get bears in the neighborhood, and I have also seen coyote packs out
this is why I don't think it looks good for my poor kitty.

the kids and I are going to put up flyers today too.
for the poster that asked, yes she is spayed. she was spayed at the shelter before we adopted her.

she is a very skittish cat anyway, always has been since the day we got her, took her awhile to warm up to human contact with us. so with that in mind I am hoping she is just out there hiding somewhere we haven't found yet.

I really hope she finds her way back
I will keep you all posted,

I'm sorry to hear that..:( I thought sure she would be back by this morning..

Don't give up hope though! Maybe she'll wander home today..

npmommie, don't give up hope. Sending you lots of :wizard: in hopes of finding your kitty soon.

yesterday hubby was out for a run, he comes home and says he spotted our cat one road over from ours!! he tried to catch her for 45 minutes and she stayed just out of reach, he could only get so close and she would dart off.

I wonder if she is just so confused and disoriented that she was too scared. she has always been a skittish cat since we got her and is always hard to catch even at home, like when she has to go to the vet, I have to get the kids to catch her for me.

so anyway, we all went over there when he got back, but she was no where to be seen at that point, so I put up more flyers and told some of the neighbors, and they said they saw her too!

she is soooooo close to home, but just not finding her way here yet!

we are going to go look for her again shortly. keep your fingers crossed for us!
we have nets and a cat carrier too.
