My sister and I had completely different reactions to the following story and I'm wondering what you think about it.

My sister's friend, Anna, was given a surprise trip to WDW a couple of weekends ago by her boyfriend, Fred. To get to Orlando from where they live it takes two two-hour plane rides and it costs quit a bit of money. We're in Canada. It's probably important to know that Fred doesn't have a job. Anna and Fred went to the airport, flew to FL, went to the MK until it closed, stayed overnight onsite, and came back the next morning.

My sister thinks that this an absolutely ridiculous waste of money and says that she would be upset if her boyfriend did this. I'm inclined, however, to think that I would be really excited about this. Sure, if my boyfriend was unemployed I might feel a bit guilty for him spending money like this but if it was a surprise, I would gladly go along with it. My sister also says that she wouldn't want to bother going to WDW for such a short time. Again, I disagree. Hell, I would take 2 hours in one of the park if I could have it, especially all expenses paid.

I'm curious to hear your reactions.

It doesn't sound very responsible, but no time is too short at WDW. :thumbsup2

This is totally off topic, but is that you with the goofball shirt on? I've always wondered if it was...

I guess it would depend on the circumstances. Did the BF book the trip before he lost his job? What was the occasion that he gave this as a gift? If he booked it after he lost his job, I think it would be a bit irresponsible. However, if this has been something he has been planning for a long time, and it just happened to occur after he lost his job, I don't blame him for following through with the gift.

This guy hasn't had a job in quite some time, to answer your question.

Let's say the initial flight was scheduled to depart at 6:00am. Four hours of flying and lets say only 45 minutes between flights and 45 minutes from arrival at MCO to get to WDW would mean getting to WDW at 11:30 am. The is the absolute earliest arrival time possible.

Let's look at the pricing (note all in $US, not $Cdn)

Two one day non-hopping tickets $142.72

Taxi R/T MCO-WDW about $100

Value Resort (on Property) at least $90

If using resort on property deduct airport transportation cost but add about one hour to time. If using lodging off property room cost less but then paying much more for taxi.

If unemployed where is he getting the money from. This is close to $350 for about 12 hours in the parks plus Air Fare and parking at home airport.

I hate to use the term, but IMHO stupid may begin to describe the action.

In that case, I'm surprised the GF isn't concerned about his priorities. I would feel much more comfortable dating a person that would place getting a job above going on an expensive vacation. We had friends that went to WDW one year and then wanted to borrow money from us later that same year. Irresponsible!

Sure it may be irresponsible but I still don't think I would refuse to go on the trip or anything like that if it were given to me as a surprise. I have no idea where he got the money from but it came from somewhere.

Maybe he had flight vouchers that would have expired otherwise :confused3

Life is too short not to do something crazy and fun every once in a while :sunny:

Sounds like fun to me. Wouldn't mind going now myself. 4 months seems so far away. If he couldn't afford it he wouldn't of treated her.

The best thing about being a grown-up is that you get to spend your money on whatever you want. You don't have to beg your rational and responsible parents who would for sure say "NO!" I, on the other hand, would never spend the kind of money a flight would cost for a 1 night trip. The ratio of travel time to fun time is just too high.

But would you have objected if someone else treated you to the trip?

Unemployed doesn't necessarily mean broke. We don't know how much money this guy has in the bank, or if he had frequent flyer miles or what. So, it is hard to say whether or not he could afford it (even if it were any of our business.)

Would I have gone? You bet. It's a short trip, but still fun - and quite a story!

Heck no! But i probably would "miss my flight home" to stay a couple more days.

If it were my boyfriend and not DH - as in we didn't share bank accounts, I would go and have a ball!

My first thought was also about the money - but then I remembered a show I watched today about a woman with terminal cancer who said she wasn't thinking of what she had done in her life, but what she hadn't done, and that makes you think "go for it"! :goodvibes

I'd probably say something like "This is frivoulous waste of money & you should NOT have done this............"

While standing in line to ride Tower of Terror.............!!!!!!!! :thumbsup2 :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
