Apologies if this has been asked before.

I'm considering the card b/c I mean who doesn't like free airfare?! But here's my question...

I sign up, get 50k points. I don't have a trip planned until December 2013. If I pay the first annual fee, get the points, can I cancel the card and still have the points banked? Or do they disappear when I cancel the card?
Or will I end up paying 2 annual fees? I don't know if I fully mind that b/c I know you get more points annually. But I would like to know what I'm going into.

THANKS !!!!

The points go into your Rapid Rewards account and they never expire. Chase does not take them back if you cancel the card after a year. The program doesn't work the same way as the Disney Visa. If you close that card, you lose your points.

But opening and closing credit card accounts is probably not something that you will want to do on a regular basis. So you might not want to do this every time a great offer pops up.

oh i don't plan to. I actually monitor my credit very closely and am only considering it b/c I have exceptional credit with no plans on any major purchases in the near future. I don't know if I will definitely cancel the card, but I just wanted to know what the rules were.

thanks for answering!

Marionette,

You sound like you might be able to answer another question for me. I've only flown Southwest a couple of times through the years because the closest airport to me they fly from is 200 miles. Looks like I've let any ff credits expire. I do, however, have one credit on Airtrans.

I tried to read the flyertalk thread and figure out if transferring it over to Southwest would benefit me at all. Couldn't make heads or tails of the discussion of credits vs. points. I'm also not sure when the Airtrans point expires.

I signed up for the Southwest credit card recently because it's worth driving 200 miles for the free tickets and cheaper fare for the rest of us for an October trip.

Thanks for any insight you can provide.

Sheila
