Hi There. I hope this is the correct forum for this. If not I apologize.

I just started looking into renting DVC Points for my September trip and was shocked at how much less it would cost me than booking through Disney. On a whim I decided to check the dates for my upcoming April trip and saw that it wasn't too late to book DVC for our dates. I'm wondering since I'm inside of 60 days and have my FPs booked will I lose my selections if I cancel the original booking and book a stay with DVC points?

Thanks in advance!

To be blunt, save for a very short stay, it really is too late to book for April unless you've found a confirmed reservation, and September availability is also stank unless you're open to OKW or Saratoga. Don't get your hopes up for BWV.

IF, and it is a giant IF, you were to secure a rental, you could link it in MDE and then cancel your resort booking and you'd be fine. But save for a very specific group of dates, there are no studios on property for more than 2 days consecutive all of April. Any availability you see on the Disney booking site are not points units and can only be had for cash.

If you are seeing certain villas as available, those are available for cash rental as though there were regular hotel rooms. They are actually NOT available to DVC members to book with their points.
IE Basically what ever the Disney cash site says, in no way, reflects what is available to DVC members to reserve (and rent) with their points.

@_auroraborealis_ pretty much covered the availability issues you will face. (and cancel your cash stay after you link the new stay) I altered a stay and got a warning that I no longer had a resort reservation for days on which I made 60 day fast passes, and I needed to fix it or I would lose them. They did not just cancel them. This was in November.

You can certainly save a lot renting DVC points, but, be aware of 2 things as well. 1. Scams (I would only go with a broker or a trusted source) 2. If you cancel your trip that you rented points for you are most likely SOL with the rental cost, unlike a Disney hotel room that you can cancel up to 4 days out and get all your money back.

Glad I asked the question. My knowledge of DVC is slightly north of 0 :-)

I was looking on the David's Website and saw listings with $$ for the dates I was interested in. I assumed if the prices were showing the properties had availability.

Is there somewhere I can go to see if anything is available for future trips?

Thanks so much!

If you saw a listing for the dates you wanted, that means someone had that booked and is trying to sell their reservation so it would be available.

We may be seeing people holding reservations that have decided not to travel, or perhaps can not travel from other countries due to the corona virus. If you see the listing on David's, contact them to verify it is available as an existing reservation,. And if it is, it is likely a pretty good deal, since we are within 60 days of travel date.

Just be sure you don't cancel your existing cash reservation until you are certain of that the DVC reservation is secured.

OK, only a little confused now :-) So David's has availability that wouldn't necessarily show up elsewhere?

Is there a place you could recommend that I could brush up on DVC Rentals so I don't waste people's time with lots of questions?

Much thanks!

David's points calculator (https://dvcrequest.com/dvc-guests/cost-calculator) is not real time, and if you put in dates and it spits out points/costs, that is not availability.

Dedicated Reservations for Rent (https://dvcrequest.com/dvc-guests/dedicated-reservations-for-rent) are reservations that are booked that owners are choosing not to use and are renting out. The dates, room size and view types are set and cannot be adjusted. Don't cancel a cash booking until you have a confirmation in hand from David's.

Since you've already found David's, the IOnformation section on his site should help illuminate the process: https://dvcrequest.com/information/dvc-rentals

Basically, DVC is a timeshare and needs to be booked 7-11 months out to get good selection of properties and dates. The cheapest units are very hard to get as a non-owner (and as an owner, truthfully).

Thanks again! So if i go through the booking process on David's and submit my $133 deposit are the odds pretty low that I'll get a match, particularly on a non Saratoga-Key West Studio for September. Assuming April would be a no go this late.

It depends on the dates in September, and certainly don't have expectations of AKV Value, BWV Standard or BLT Standard, or anything at Copper Creek. There is some scattered availability for various resorts, though.

April is stank. If it's not a confirmed reservation, there's a little bit mostly clustered around Easter, which is a high points set of weeks, and only scattered and very limited resorts.

OKW and Saratoga are much nicer than Pop or AOA, I will say. No one goes into DVC rental thinking of either, it seems, but the reality is most people have a backup booking at a Value and they both are in a whole different class than the Value in nearly every way. Especially Saratoga's pool bar, yow.

Possibly. If a DVC member has an existing reservation, for various reasons that you do not NEED to know about as a renter because they simply do not matter to you (but they include holding points and reservations past their banking dead lines - if you really want to know) the owner may choose to rent out the existing reservation as is (basically subletting it), In this case, the broker, David's, will have availability that no one else has. Realize that it is literally 1 room on those dates, you are taking over someone else's existing reservation Its not "availability" in the traditional sense, as the room is already booked and the person that has it booked is 'selling' their reservation. Disney will be totally unaware of the transaction. The renter will change the names on the reservation.

I tried to explain it as best I could. but please note, none of it is negative. You arent getting a 'lesser' or 'used' reservation or anything like that at all. You are getting a perfectly legit, usable reservation

Thank You. None of the above taken as negative. :-)

Like they said if David's has a confirmed reservation for rent in April then you may be lucky. For September for a studio you're cutting it a little close. It will most likely be Saratoga and Old Key West left, but there's always a chance. Since you're within 7 months you wouldn't have to pay a points premium at least.

FYI, the first part of September is still available at SSR and AKV (Savanna View) - not so much the last two weeks depending on how many days you need.

Actually, SSR Standard view is available only the first part of September. SSR Preferred view is available all September but the 15th.

I'm looking at the last week of September for 4 nights. I submitted a request and paid my deposit through David's, requesting 4 different properties. If nothing is available I can always wait for Passholder discounts for that time period like I usually do. September is my Solo trip so a Studio would be my first choice.

Thanks!

Or you could pamper yourself with a one bedroom at OKW :-) That's what I often do for solo trips.

According to my wife the whole trip is me pampering myself LOL. I usually do the DxDP, MNSSHP, a tour of some type, miscellaneous Pub Crawls. After a Summer of working my tail off it's a nice way to recharge. I'd have to keep the One Bedroom hidden from her :-)
