OMG, Vent on 2012 coverage!

My sweet little boy with autism was caught watching a show on the SciFi Network on what is going to happen in 2012! Now he is having a panic attack and OCDing on this! He is only 9 yrs old and he does not need to be worrying about this! I explained to him how everyone thought the world was going to come to an end on 1/1/2000 and how nothing happened, that helped, but only a little. How can I ease his mind? My heart is breaking for him.

I don't know if this would work, but maybe telling him that we're going to live each day to the fullest, no matter what. Enjoy each day for what it brings and don't worry about tomorrow. We'll deal with whatever comes then. Good luck. I know how scary those 2012 shows can be, I've been freaked out by them as well! Maybe studying Mayan culture may make him feel more at ease too? I always just figured that they got tired of making calendars and that's why it ends then...

I he is willing to discuss it “logically” let him know that 2012 is primarily based on one culture, out of hundreds that have existed, and all cultures have has many “end of time” prophecies that have come and gone without incident. Even though the Mayan calendar ends in 2012, the interpretation that this demonstrated that the Mayan culture believed a cataclysm would occur is still very subjective. Ask him if he knows of any one who can foresee the future, even a fee days or moments let alone a thousand years.

Let him know that “docudramas” are not scientifically review and are designed to maximize rating so as with virtually everything on TV a “scientists perspective” must be used in viewing it.

If he likes math have him figure the odds of and end of time scenario happening in his lifetime (4 billion years, 100 year life span, 1 in 40 million, even if you assume that it will ever happen at all, other than the sun burn our scenario billions of year from now).
