It's been really wet here for the past few weeks. I don't know if that has anything to do with this, but we have snails all over our front porch. They are on my Hibiscus, on our columns on the fallen/dead Hibicus flowers. I counted, I think, 14 of the suckers in their shells and all. I made Dh get out there to get rid of them (thinking he'd know what to do:rolleyes: ), he picked them up & threw them on the sidewalk where our dog preceded to eat them. I screamed, Ewww, get them out of her mouth. DH said "what?? Escargot, she's very sophisticated" Oh no, no, no!!! I just can't have this. Where are they coming from & how do I get rid of them?? We have lived here for 4 years & I've never even seen one. Yuck, yuck, yuck!!!

We would pour salt on them, but they were not in shells. They would shrivel up and die. I guess that sounds pretty gross too. I would think when it dries up they will go away. Sorry you are having that problem.

With SLUGS you can pour salt on them to kill them, or bury a jar partially filled with beer (leaving the top sticking out a little). They like the flavor and will fall in and drown!

Don't know what to do with their shelled family members though. Are they little snails or big hermit-crab sized ones?

go give your dog a big kiss on his lips

They are nasty! Salt does work! I can remember as a child pouring salt on slugs for amusement! LOL

My dd would just die if she heard that snails died. We just got rid of her "snail farm". She likes to collect the small snails out of the yard and keep them. She feeds them cucumbers and loves to watch them move around. Make sure you wash your hands after you touch them; my sis took a biology class and snails carry a bacteria that people can catch (yuck!).
Try pouring a little salt around to see if that gets rid of them. Don't put it too close to plants; they also make bug granuals that kills slugs so maybe that would work.

Are you referring to the snail or DH?? :teeth:

Seriously, I might have to fight him for the beer & then he'd be fighting the snail.:teeth:

You can also sprinkle "dimacious earth" (sp?) around the area. Dimacious earth is a white powder that's basically the exoskeletons of sea plankton. To slugs and snails however, it's like us walking across razor blades in bare feet.

I wouldn't suggest using DH's beer. Go buy a 6-pack of the cheapest stuff you can find (I'll assume DH's beer and the cheapest are not one and the same! :teeth: )

I doubt the snails/slugs are connoisseurs!

Happy hunting!!

Ortho makes a product called Bug-Geta Snail and Slug Killer. I have problems with snails and slugs eating my flowers. I use this product and it works great.

Thanks for the replies. I will have to go to Lowe's today & see what I can find to get rid of them. It is so gross, they are still there today & I think they invited some friends over to join them. I'm just glad I saw them before I walked out there for my dog to go to the bathroom, I would have puked if I'd stepped on one. Between these & the spider pics thread, I'm gonna be cleaning every nook & cranny inside & out of my house.:faint:
