Olympus Digital Camera - Am I doing something wrong????

After looking at several digital cameras we decided on the Olympus Digital Camedia all weather because of its' size and supposedly, ease of use.

After having it a month, I have used it for a few occasions but always seem to have trouble with indoor pictures. Lots of red-eye and the photos are too dark - I always have to lighten them with software.

Also, I took it to a wedding and not one of the pictures is printable. Seems any movement is a blur and the light level for flash pictures is too low. My old Sony Mavica seems to take better pics...... It's too late to return as I am past the 30 days.

Does anyone else have an Olympus Digital that could offer some insight? Thanks for any information.

Well, what settings are you using for the camera? It depends on how the camera is figuring out the exposure.

The wedding pictures sound like the speed is not fast enough, and the darkness sounds like it wasn't using the flash properly. Red-eye problems sound like you need to use the 'red-eye' flash setting most cameras have.

I might suggest you read the manual on the camera, it probably has a bunch of settings (like most digital cameras) for fast action, night shots, etc.... You may need to pay more attention to how it's operating than to just turn it on and hope it's going to take pictures like The Lion King.

Can you post some pictures? That might help us with the diagnosis.

My guess is based on your description is that the flash is underpowered for the distance you wish to illuminate. Snce thre is not enough light, the shutter speed slows down and hence the motion artifact.

The red eye is a problem of any camera with a flash mounted or used that is at the same level as the eyes of the subject. Either have more light in the room to constrict the pupils or use the red eye reduction feature if your camera has one, or use an external flash or bounce flash, or use some photo programs that have red eye reduction software in them.

a cheap fix for red eye is to tape a thin piece of tissue paper over the flash to diffuse it..
