I posted this on the Disabillites board & decided to post here also since it involves OKW. Any help or insight would be appreciated.

As you can see from my ticker, my husband & I are going with my MIL to Disney for a celebration in Septemeber. I booked a one bedroom unit at OKW that is Wheelchair accessible (I asked for a room that has a rool in shower, and the handrails around the toliet).

My question is . . . how are these rooms? This is the first time that we have traveled to Disney with special needs/requests. My MIL has no use of her right arm & her only rt. leg movement is from the hip. She is doing so well considering the surgery she had and all of the "she will never do this again" talk the doctor's gave us.

Also, I know this is a little OT . . . but how are the companion restrooms in the parks? I have requested the WDW guide for guest with Disablities, but the CM didn't know if it addressed these questions or not.

Thanks again for all of your useful answers!

Your MIL will like the high bed at OKW, because it will be easier for her to get in and out of with mobility problems. The only concern I have is that you will be using the living room for you and DH to sleep on the hide-a-bed. I know the roll in shower rooms do not have a tub, so you will probably need a few extra towels to keep the floor dry. I am not sure if the kitchen of the handicap units are different for wheelchair access or not. I think the counters might be lower and there might be few cabinets. The OKW units are very large, so she will have no trouble navigating the hall or bedroom spaces.

Thanks so much for your information . . . Hubby & I stayed at OKW in 09/03 and had a two bedroom unit at that time.

We are finally able to bring my MIL home to live (I go to school at night during the summer - and hubby is a Marine during the day - well he's a Marine 24/7 - but you know what I mean). My MIL has Aphasia & Aprexia and has surpassed all of her doctor's expectations. We are hoping that her mobility issues will be less than what they are currently.

She is able to walk W/ minimal assistance (only 400 feet - but its qualitiy walking using her own strength). So this is her reward trip for pushing herself so hard. She will be celebrating her 57 birthday while we are there so she is very excited.

Now you are making me feel very thankful, because I am your MIL's age! Hope she continues to make great progress!

I had a HA room at OKW and they are very roomy. Bathroom and shower are easily accessible. You should be fine. And I have stayed at OKW 4 wks after surgery....rented an electric scooter for my stay. The staff was wonderful and accomodating to any needs I had. The bus drivers were also wonderful and patient as I learned to back the scooter on the bus and parallel park! I got tired easily but I had a blast scooting around.
Take MIL and enjoy her birthday! Have a magical trip!!!
