Do turkey's generally stink when you open them up to clean them out? Today while DH was cleaning out the turkey the stench was horrendous. Neither of us remember turkey's stinking in the past. So we went ahead and cooked it. Left it in for about 30 minutes past the time the little thingy popped up. When DH was carving it alot of the meat was pink and looked not done so we used our meat thermometer and it said over 160 degrees but something just didn't seem right so we didn't eat it. So what do you think, did we get a bad turkey? Just ticks me off that we spent 20 something dollars on a turkey we couldn't eat.

Does sound like it had gone off :(

Claire ;)

I definitely wouldn't eat it and definitely would return it to the store for a refund or a replacement turkey. No way should they smell bad when you unwrap them.

Yep - sounds like a "bad" one.. Good call not eating it..

OH MY !!! Very glad that you didnt eat it , you have to be so careful .

I am sorry you were missing a bird for Thanksgiving if you lived closer to Dallas I would have given you half of mine :goodvibes

My family had a fit about coming and then she didnt show up with her kids and thier wives, girlfriends ect.

a 22 Lb bird for 7 people is just a waste. anyone have a good leftover idea ???

That's too bad about your turkey. That's the first I heard of a bad one. Do take it back to the store if you can.

I would not have eaten it either. When I unwrapped my turkey I could not smell anything.

Actually, I have opened hamburger meat in the past that has had an odor. My own rule is that if I can smell raw meat (other than bacon or sausage) then I throw it out. I can even tell if bacon doesn't smell right either.

Maybe your turkey was left out too long without being refrigerated or frozen during the processing.

I think even if you do not have a receipt still take it back. I have taken meat back like that and had no problem.

Thanks for the info. I'm really glad we didn't eat it! But I'm a little scared now because we did eat the gravy from the drippings. I guess neither one of us thought about that. Well I guess if we get violently sick here in the next 5 hours we'll know why. Please oh please don't let that happen because we have two little kiddos and no one to help with them if that were to happen not to mention me missing out on black friday.

Now for taking the turkey back. Should we just take the cooked turkey back to the store and explain to them what happened or just take the receipt, if DH still has it.

DH just walked through the room and said he keeps smelling that turkey and it's making him sick.

I'd put the whole bird in a garbage bag and let them see it so they don't doubt you and refuse to refund. I don't think they would do that but I'd take it and the receipt both. Good luck!

So I called our local store today to find out what they might be willing to do and what I needed to bring in with me. When I talked to the customer service person she said that there had been a recall on three lots of the Norbest turkeys and she's sure mine was one of them. So I took the tag and my receipt in the store tonight and they gave me my money back as well as another turkey. Of course I had no use for another turkey so I gave that one to a friend. The worst part was rumaging through the trash can trying to find the tag. :scared1: So it all worked out in the end and I'm just thankful we didn't eat it!

Greatto hear that everything worked out, and you DIDN'T eat the turkey!

I just read your post and had to comment... I am sorry about your turkey but i too had a similar experience. i bought 8 turkeys to cook for school and when i opened them they smelled fine but soon as the heat hit them 3 of them were bad. My whole kitchen at school smelled like a chicken pit (for those who have never bee around a chicken house it is where you put dead chickens). It was the worst thing i have ever smelled. So i called the store and the meat manager wated them back  . My husband and I had to put them in a garbage bag and get them back to the store. Nothing fazes my hubby and he never gags but we both thought we were gonna toss our cookies  . When we took it to the store we put it in a cart and pulled it behid us because the smell was trailing and was rancid. It had to be the worst smell.. one of my sales men came by and would not even come in the kitchen. I hope next time we wont have this much trouble.
