well, since it was purchased 25 years ag, not sure how helpful my vote is in todays world...but suffice it to say I can see why diamonds or any other pricey engagement rings are purchased prior to marriage vs well into it, no way would I feel right if my DH spent now what he did then on a jewelry item for me..way too many other things the $ needs to go to, back then I had no idea. Ahhhh youth. To answer the OP's post, I believe it was a smidge over a months salary..not that we were adhearing to a specific "range", just that DH chose a stone, then later selected a setting...just added up that way.

I had lost a good bit of weight and lost my wedding band at work. He replaced it with a diamond anniversary band. I still only wear it half the year; spring and summer.

I have a friend who has a $35,000 ring, and her husband makes $60,000/year. She was pretty adamant about having it. It's nice, but not that nice. She loaned him the money to get it. I just think the whole thing is ridiculous, but to each their own.

I've always preferred the blue sapphire to a diamond.

Mine was $5 - a simple hematite band. DH was 17 when he proposed.

Our wedding rings were $25 altogether.

I still love them.

We got mine from a pawn shop. They were trying to liquidate all this jewelry they had and had a massive sale. We found a ring we liked and then DH bought another ring with a bigger diamond in it and had a jeweler swap the diamond. The whole thing cost right around $1,000 a few years ago. It appraises for more than $8,000. I wear it everyday and almost every time I go out I get comments on it . Not only can you get a killer deal at a pawn shop, but you can also get really unique pieces.

DH and I have always been cash people, the only loan we've ever had is a mortgage. You'd be shocked at how many jewelers couldn't grasp this. They'd always give us the monthly payment price and one even said jewelers are no longer in the jewelry business, they're in the financing business. I just don't get this rampant attitude, especially amongst college age people, that they're entitled to a 1 carat engagement ring, even if it means paying several times what it's worth because the monthly payment is affordable . Pay cash, get something you can afford, and if five years from now it's still important to you go upgrade.

Oh, and I love how these girls that insist their fiance get a massive ring on credit don't get that they're the ones who are going to be paying it off .
