Ok, Pete. You said you encourage honest criticism, so here's my beef.

and there's me trying to convince DH that I need a new laptop because it was running so slow!!!!

oh well - better luck next time

No, it's not a server issue, it's a software issue. This has become more pronounced with the newest version of VBulletin that we upgraded to last month. We are aware of it and are working on a solution - but I don't have a time frame yet as we have not definitively located the source of the issue (we have a good idea though).

Pete
Thanks, Pete! Take a number! :thumbsup2

Ahh, see I have 20mb so I think that's why I don't have significant problems., although sometimes it flashes up a server problem!
 I didn't know 20 was available (I have SBC, and I haven't seen it offered). So, what's it like being Bill Gates? :lmao:

Although, Hamsters on Red Bull are pretty funny to watch.

Yes, they make good graphics designers!

Always puzzles me when the UK is ahead of the US in stuff, such as broadband speeds and cell phones.

A friend of mine has now got 50 (yes 50!) mb broadband connection at the moment, its like a blur!!

My lowly 2mb broadband runs fast enough for me with it being on fibre optic cables being a plus :)

:goodvibes

Wow....mine's not slow. Wonder why? I'm pretty darn sure we don't have the fastest service available. I'm also not very patient so I know I would notice it being slow :)

Wow wish you have quick internet over there.

Disney.com doesn't give me too many problems. Than again neither do the disboards. Once in awhile they are slower loading for me but not too often. I also only have 6mbs. My cable company does offer faster but only by a couple of mbs unless you upgrade to a business account. Even than it only goes to 12mbs I think.

Yep! We got offered 50mb using fibre optics, but it is a lot more expensive, 20mb is good enough for me. Plus we have 3 wireless laptops working off the one internet connection, so we need to keep it fairly quick!

Um... where I work we have Gigabit ethernet. 10GB. We are part of the Internet2 project with the supercollider. I still notice some slowness on the disboards which confirms what Pete said.

But I still think that Hamsters/Squirels/Rodents on Red Bull should be able to solve the problem. :thumbsup2

We have 20 but typically get speeds around 10mbs - they cap it in the evenings 6-10pm I think. Doesn't make much difference to surfing the net tho.

Are you with Virgin Kate? I have to say I prefere their TV service to Sky now (NTL were awful but Virgin are getting there) I just love the on demand things :thumbsup2 If you have it they have Disney things on there somewhere - showtime or something off the top of my head ;)

I think there are some countries where 100 is normal :scared1: - somewhere in Asia and I think Sweeden have a good service.

Alex had a conversation last night with the developer who created our new search engine here on the boards (the man is beyond talented). He is currently working on a newer version of search that will further enhance it's functionality AND at the same time, SHOULD fix the table locking issue we're experiencing right now that is causing the slow down. The timeframe I'm being told right now is about three weeks - but of course, that's speculative so don't hold me to it.

Just wanted to update everyone and to let you know that we are aware of the issue and we're working to get it fixed.

Our problem with getting faster speeds is size and lack of competition. There are many areas of the country that have only one cable and one DSL provider. The other issue that will have to be addressed is the clear non-competitive practices of many of out ISPs. I am not sure if the ISPs in Europe and the UK are tied to television providers but here most are.

Because allowing for faster speeds and higher caps makes it more attractive to watch TV online (Hulu, TV.com) the providers do all they can to throddle it back. Add in that there are few truly fast internet options in most areas and the competitive pressure to offer the faster speeds in most of the country just doens't exist. The main compeditor, DSL, works great until you try to stream an HD show in one room online while someone in the other room streams an HD movie on their X-bok from Netflix and a third person tries to make a VoIP call. Good Luck getting all that through a 1.5 or 3mb pipe!

It could be worse, we could all be in Australia dealing with their broadband issues.

Huh, this thread has now been double hijacked...first hampsters, now comparing broadband speeds over the Atlantic.

Yeah, I'm with Virgin at Uni, we have great internet but the a very basic TV package, but the On Demand is good! We have sky plus at home, which I personally love!

I think we all know that the official slowest website ever prize goes to..... Disney.com!!!

We have a gig connection at work and in the summer I'm pretty much the only person pulling off it. I still get slow down on the DIS.

Great info, sounds like you have some solid people working on it.

Excuse me while I wipe the drool off of my desk. Sounds like a university or school, right? I remember when I used to work for the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse. The speeds there were outrageous, and that was almost 10 years ago.
We have a 10 Meg pipe (full duplex) where I work now, and I thought it was fast, but wow...

Yea, I work at a school. Its nice, although during the year the speeds aren't all that hot. Lots of people pulling on it. It is still fast though :)

Yeah here in the US consider yourself lucky if you even get DSL or Cable. There are still many places that only get dial up service still. As well as some that only have a choice of one DSL and or cable company to go through. My hometown does offer DSL and cable but you have no competition at all. Until DSL and cable came out they only had a choice of two dial up services to go through without having to pay long distance fees. Even though DSL and cable modem is offered up there it is still pretty expensive with only one cable company and two phone companies to go through. Heck my parents were paying 20.00 a month for dial up. Many people still had dial up service until recently. It has only been in the past couple of months that the phone company has told everyone that they have to switch over to DSL because they are doing away with dial up.

Stop all this talk about gigs and mbs and duplex and such- that is my work lingo... I come here to escape that :rotfl2: Disney :wizard:Disney :wizard: Disney :wizard:
