OK I must be dumb, but what is this Tag Fairy

I am lost, I love these boards, but could someone please explain to me just what the Tag Fairy is? Oh I do apologize now if I have insulted anyone. I just want in as well..... Can I play too??? Oh Please someone tell me..... and how would one know if they got Tagged???

See where it says "DIS Veteran" under your username on the left? That's your tag. You can change your tag, but only the tag fairy can change the colors of your tag. You never know when the tag fairy will show up, and people have lots of ways of attracting him or her.

(Just a suggestion for the moderators, should there be a "Tag Fairy Q&A" stuck to the top of this forum? This question seems to come up a lot)

a tag fairy leaves something or a saying on your tag only the tag fairys leaves color to your tag .I use to have a tag says daughter of a taggee now she has one to. don't writ something or you will delete that tag.

Hi hope my explaination helps. Thought I would reply to your post since I just recently got tagged by the Tag Fairy a few days ago. From what I understand the Tag Fairy is an anonymous person on these boards who if you clap, wish and hope hard enough will honor you with a tag under your screen name. Now, the Tag Fairy is the only one who can give you these colored little sayings under your screen name and I think I've read somewhere here that if you go into your profile and try to give yourself a tag it will only turn up black---no color and then you would have made the tag fairy not too happy and she probably won't visit you. I had always hoped I would get a visit but I never tried to clap, clap, clap---as lots of others here do but I did have the fortunate experience of a visit from the Tag Fairy due to a post I have running here and I was sooo surprised!!!! My tags are really special to me and usually they have something to do with a thread you have placed and something you've said in them

Hi there, there are so many interesting lil tid bits to learn about on these boards! I was lucky enough to get a visit from the Tag Fairy and a lil help finding out the Dis lingo. I have no doubt that the Tag Fairy will visit you. This is one busy, but very creative and fun Fairy. Just keep wishing and clapping! If ya need my dictionary you can borrow it any time. It is all loaded up in the wheelbarrow!!!

It started when someone would say something funny, someone would put a funny tag under their name. Where on earth people got the idea they should start begging, clapping and wishing is beyond me. Seems silly to me, it's not very funny if you beg for it instead of it just being spontaneous. JMHO
