I have to say i am really impressed with omega-sattar( new company that somehow took over phoenix ) I called them, she was going to just replace the lens but they are no longer making them ( or handlng them maybe since i only see a manual on B&H now) so still is looking into what they can do but is sending me a free $40 book for lightroom and black and white conversion. considering the garbage i have been through with a certain unnamed bigtime camera brand i have to say i am impressed with the way OS is handling things for a 2 + yr old , $150 lens to boot!

i have a phoenix/vivitar 100mm macro . i got it since it's one of those "good for the price " lenses and i wanted to see if i would use a macro before i spent a lot...i am happy with the iq, love the length BUT about a yr after i got it it stopped focusing right. it will af in macro but when you go to focus it at 100mm for a normal shot it won't switch. it doesn't focus at all, just a nice bokeh effect over the whole photo(
) i assumed it had a yr warranty and was bummed but figured it was a cheap and i shouldn 't have bought a cheap lens so just put it away. this was with my rebel xt body.
then i heard a couple months ago it was a 6 yr warranty( actually 5) so i sent it in to get looked at. got it back, it worked great for a week on my 40d then started not focusing again. sent it back, they called and said nothing is wrong, it focuses fine on their 40d ( this was the same woman i posted about who told me about the 80% only use brand lenses if anyone remembers.when she called and told me it works perfectly...i asked if they had checked what i told them was bad she basically bit my head off and said that they read my note and checked what i told them so it is my camera body that is the problem...
)
so here is the deal as to what my perfectly working lens is doing.....everytime i take a photo, i have to set it to manual so i can manually turn the barrel to the correct setting, ie infinity for 100mmm( barrel all the way in) or the macro setting( it has a scale on the lens for that) macro distance for macro( barrel all the way out), manually get it close to correct focus, then set it to auto and it will focus...this is after every photo unless the photo is almost identical focus, ie if i take 2 photos of the same thing, then it just hunts for a few mins then will af. it happens on any mode ie one shot, ai focus, servo, any/all points, any aperture, i tested it any way i could think of and it is consistent in it's problem.
since the barrel isn't even turning on it's own to focus this hardly seems like it is working to me. i checked my other 2 working lenses and they are working OK( well once i turned the af back on that somehow i turned off , probably when i thought i was setting the af lock hehe
) so i don't see how it could be the body. plus it did it with both bodies. and since it supposedly worked with their 40d i would think it should work with mine due to reverse engineering etc. but i don't understand why it worked the first time i got it back for a short time then reverted back to not working..this time it worked for one or two shots then went back to not working.
i'm going to call the place that actually sells them( now that vivitar is kaput)
and see if they can help since they are the place that told me to send it to phototech.
but does it sound like it could possibly be the body? any ideas?
see it just basically is all brands of lenses i have that have a problem,not just canon . i don't discriminate according to brands
. hub is getting me the 17-50 tamron for our anniversary so that will be the next brand up for me to have a problem with.
