Reassure me please?? I am taking my ds to the Dr in a little while but in the meantime I figured I'd ask my dis friends. My ds(9) has been showing me that one of his nipples is a bit puffy I guess would be the word, lately. So today, he showed me and I felt it and there is a definite lump under it. I am thinking hormones?? Do boys get 'breast buds' like little girls? I called the Dr and they are seeing him right away b/c she could tell I was a little freaked out. I will update when I get home but anyone have experience with this? Please keep a good thought that it is nothing. Thanks.

I had something similar growing up, as did a few of my best friends. None of us went to the doctor, but they went away on their own. Good luck, and let us now how everything went.

I'd love to know if it was something I should have been worried about.

I found this article http://www.drpaul.com/adolescent/breastenlarge.html. I don't think I would be too worried.

Breast Enlargement in Adolescent Boys

Why does this occur?

Enlarged or swollen breasts are seen quite frequently in teenage boys. This is called "pre-pubertal gynecomastia". As a boy enters puberty, many hormones are made that act to develop the secondary sex characteristics such as, pubic hair, genital growth and deeper voice. This complex process, controlled by the brain, results in high levels of hormones in the body. Some of these hormones originate from and thus resemble female hormones.

In some boys the levels are so high, the breast gets stimulated to grow by the female type of hormones. It is not unusual that some boys, and even girls, develop breast buds at a different pace; in other words, one breast is larger than the other. This occurs because there may be a difference in sensitivity to the hormone by each breast. Because the breast tissue is stimulated, the breast may be tender or painful. A thorough physical examination is usually enough to confirm the diagnosis related to pubertal changes which usually resolve in 1-2 years. Once the cause is confirmed, some pressure is taken off as there is no need to worry.

My DS12 mentioned he had a sore, palpable lump under his nipple recently also. Having had breast cancer myself and never having a tween boy before, my first thoughts were at first a little scary. Thankfully, a quick google search reassured me it was hormonal but he had his physical the next week and his pediatrician told me it's very common in pubescent boys, that it may take a year or so to resolve, and that it can get quite sore. She also said they can get a little extra breast tissue (called gynecomastia) but that that should also resolve in about a year, too. I noticed at a pool party recently many of the same age boys have it. (Sorry if TMI, but it might have saved me some worry if I'd known to expect it. Therefore HTH someone else.)

My son had this when he was around 11 or 12..doctor reassured us that it was normal and now at almost 15, it's gone!

And I thought this was going to be ANOTHER doctor-bashing thread . . . :rolleyes1

my son had this also and thankfully it was nothing to worry about, the doctor told him to cut down on the caffiene . he outgrew it, but cutting the caffiene down definetly helped.

Thanks guys!! Doc said it is normal. Guess I could've just googled but at least my mind is at ease now. Of course, his 2 older sisters are telling him he has "moobs" so now he is crying. Just another day in paradise:rotfl2:
