Oh the Tragedy! No Ooey Gooey Toffee Cake this time! Updates x 5 9/30

I have never had toffee cake but based on your previous reviews I made a reservation for our upcoming trip. Unfortunately after looking at all our plans I just don't think we will be hungry enough for a large lunch so I cancelled it. There's alway next time.

There is a recipe for it on the All Ears site. I have made it before...delicious!! We're going to LTT for lunch next month and looking forward to trying it there.

I have made it as well. Mine didn't look as nice as LTT but it was definitely tasty!

I think I have been living under a rock! I am so behind on TR's right now!

Now to go back and catch up!

Well, I have to give you credit for moving on quickly. I am quite sure I would have cried or pulled a Shaldon (did I spell that right??? :confused3) But I am happy to see that the oozy gooey looks pretty much the same size in all your photos. I was absolutely certain it had shrunk (much like the tri-corner sandwich that may or may not exist any longer). :rotfl2:

Sorry you missed the Ooey Gooey Toffee Cake. It looks amazing and is on my list for our next trip.

It was sad. Add it to your list next time. You won't be disappointed.

Ohh the humanity ; ). I will be sure to get a double next visit in your honor, or in case they forget I orders one ; )

Ha ha! An ooey gooey OD may be the results of a double dose of that deliciousness!

I love the the plethora of pics of the cake through time....
I also thing the salad looks delish:)

It was my tribute to this amazing dessert, glad you liked it!

The one bite of salad I had was good.... I'd take another bite some time.

The last two pics of the toffee cake look the most yummiest. The poor "naked" one looks so.....naked.

Can't wait for more reviews and more pictures.

Once I started rolling the ice-cream scoop off the cake it was ooey-er and gooey-er so it worked. Yeah.... that nekkid version was a big disappointment.

sorry I have to say, as a server for many years. .. i generally ignore what the guests say to each other.. I mean, I "hear it" but I don't. because the only orders that count are the orders given TO me.

If , in the proces of ordering, I hear one person suggesting to another while they are ordering.. "maybe we should get this or that and split this or that" I'll stand back and let them discuss it for a bitl

then I will come back to the person ordering and ask him what he would like. if there is still discussion going on, I ask if they would like me to come back in a few minutes.

the server probably assumed you weren't eating and had no way of knowing you wanted to share the dessert with hubby, and since he didn't order it, you would want one of your own. although if someone isn't ordering an entree, I do usually ask them if they would like a salad or dessert.

sorry you didn't get the dessert you love!! it sounds yummy!

I completely agree with you smidgy! I can't hold our poor server responsible for any side-bar convo. If I don't explicitly say "I'll have one of your finest ooey gooey toffee cakes" what's he to do. :confused3

I'll learn from my mistake for sure on this one! :)

I hope that you ate plenty of the 'Ohana Bread Pudding to make up for the lack of Ooey Gooey Toffee Cake :thumbsup2

Let's be honest, I wasn't going to have a dessert fail twice in one day! You'll definitely see some of that later.

Donald was not outside for the photo, he was inside. So maybe a permanent change?

Ok, so maybe they did make that change permanent. Darn! Thanks for reporting back.

It is surprising that you ever came to love this dessert when you started out eating it without ice cream. The cake part must be pretty good on its own. ;)

The cake part of the dessert is like a great big moist cookie. I'm still not a fan of the ice-cream so much but I don't mind a little melting over the top before I roll it off to the side. Makes it even gooey-er that way. :)

OK, now I'm having trouble with a lunch choice for MK. I have my "Fantasy Itinerary" started for 2015, although have yet to convince T-Bone that two trips a year apart need to happen.

So far I've got Tony's, Plaza and LTT as my possible maybes for that day and the Plaza sundaes were coming out on top but now your (non) Ooey Gooey is making it really hard for the plans on my currently-pretend trip. Yes, a meal choice is often determined by the dessert menu.

I'd definitely put LTT before Tony's in my dining rotation based on dessert alone. I love the pistachio crème brulee at Tony's but everything else is just mediocre to me. (Except a certain hunky waiter but that's another topic.)

Oh shoot I got it wrong on Barb's page ... I thought it was #1 The salad looks great and the mystery is solved : ) Love your Sheldon picture reference lol

Glad to solve that mystery! #1 really is part of why this occurred in the first place.

Ha ha! I'm a BBT nerd. :cool2:

I made a lunch ressie there for Dec just because you highly recommend it! Can't wait it to try it :)

I'm glad you are giving it a try! I really hope you like it. Just make sure that you speak clearly and loudly when ordering.

OH THE INHUMANITY OF NOT BRINGING YOU THE TOFFEE CAKE. I have never had the toffee cake but it sure looks good.

Exactly! You get it!!:p It is very good. Good enough to hyperventilate.

I wonder what the reason is for moving Donald inside to outside at Tusker House. That just seems strange! Hopefully they don't do they at other character meals with people you meet outside first.

I love Yak & Yeti...sorry to hear you didn't get anything that time! I am with you on the dessert...G and I both love it so much, we've agreed that is the one dessert we won't share...we can just get 2! :rotfl:

Nothing grinds my gears like disappointing signature restaurant meals. You look forward to the meal that much more and then it falls. That wouldn't even be acceptable for a QS! If a QS served prime rib of course. The closest I can imagine is the steak sandwich or whatever at BoG lunch. It wouldn't be okay there AND it doesn't even cost $42 there. Regardless of how they handle that mistake, in my opinion, it shouldn't happen at a signature. At least you had good company!

I always love your reviews of Kona...I'm STILL dying to get over there. I do have it booked for this next trip! How I'll ever decide what to get though is beyond me. There's like 4 things I want to try! Macadamia Nut Pancakes included, of course! :thumbsup2

I'm DYING over your ooey-gooey toffee cake gallery! :lmao: You crack me up. And by dying, I mean drooling. I probably scrolled through all the pictures for about 5 minutes...maybe more. You've convinced me to go back...I haven't been since 2009! And I don't know why. I need to eat that ooey-gooey-ness again!

I have no idea the thought behind some Disney changes. They could say let's stick bands on people's wrists and limit FPs to 3 selections until you've finished all three and people would cheer! :sad2: (Just kidding!)

I agree Kimmy, some desserts are not worth the fight over who gets the last bite. I say get your own and preserve your dignity! I do have a do-over ADR for Y&Y coming up next month so I'll be sure to make this right as well.

I had great company at YSH despite that horrid cut of meat. Always look on the bright side of life right? :rolleyes1

You may need more than one breakfast at Kona. Unless you can convince G that he should order something that you want to sample and then little L that he should order the other thing! Then you may stand a chance.

GO BACK TO LTT! Take my advice. It is a must do for us.

I have never had toffee cake but based on your previous reviews I made a reservation for our upcoming trip. Unfortunately after looking at all our plans I just don't think we will be hungry enough for a large lunch so I cancelled it. There's alway next time.

There is always next time! See? You already have something to look forward to! Plus, you don't want to risk making my same mistake.

There is a recipe for it on the All Ears site. I have made it before...delicious!! We're going to LTT for lunch next month and looking forward to trying it there.

I've seen a DISer make it before and it looked quite authentic. Not sure how it tasted.

I have made it as well. Mine didn't look as nice as LTT but it was definitely tasty!

Taste is what matters! Hi Vicki!

I think I have been living under a rock! I am so behind on TR's right now!

Now to go back and catch up!

Hi there Sara!! No worries... living under rocks is perfectly fine. Thanks for stopping by.

All those ooey gooey photos made me drool.

They made me gain 2 pounds just looking at those photos! I probably gained a cumulative total of that anyway from eating them! :rotfl2:

I'm glad you enjoyed the photo tour of ooey gooeyness!

:rotfl2:

Sheldon is the OCD nerd on BBT so I can relate somewhat to him... other than I'm a girl, he's smart, and I don't eat take out every meal!

You bring up a good point... Disney should stop messing with the menu! It was perfect when the tri-corner sandwich was on there as well as the former version of the fried cheese that had the little cheese nuggets. HOWEVER, I am grateful that they have not ditched the ooey gooey toffee cake. It could be worse I'm certain.

'Ohana Dinner - April 30, 2014

DSCN9978.jpg

Dinner tonight was at a place that we used to say we didn't want to miss; however, in more recent experiences I can pass it up a trip or two. Not that I don't like the food, it's just not as appealing as some other places that I'd rather eat. And let's be honest, I only have ONE stomach so all this food isn't necessarily a plus in my opinion. But that's just me!!

For our dining companions this evening, Barb was replaced (seriously, there's no replacing Barb so let's say while she was enjoying Artist Point here, we swapped out someone else for the evening) with Chef Eddie, Paula and Hunter's pal from California Grill. This was the 4th time I’d eaten at ‘Ohana and Michael’s 2nd time. It was a first for Paula and Hunter, not sure if Chef Eddie had eaten there before. Our server, Simo from Morocco, was friendly although maybe a little slow delivering some of the courses. However, it could be due to the fact that we had noted an allergy on the reservation so they had to double check that.

We were started with our drink orders. I felt a pina colada was appropriate for this dinner! I love that the drink is served in a Tiki themed glass – makes it feel like they really care about bringing a full Polynesian experience for my drinking. Ok, maybe not but there’s no harm in imagining they care so much.

Once we had the chef consult with our friend with the allergies the food was free to flow. We were started with the delicious pineapple-coconut bread that seems to get immediately overlooked once the other courses start arriving. I make sure I tear off a chunk and pay my respects to the lovely person who took the time to bake the bread. I want them to know that I appreciate their work. Truly! This stuff is great!

The salad with the honey lime dressing was next. I’m not sure if I really like this salad or if I just feel like I’m paying homage to the roughage and fiber that surely a good dose of this salad will deliver. It’s a little too sweet for my liking but I did reserve a small section of my plate for a helping.

Then the pan of honey coriander chicken wings and pork pot stickers with sweet/sour sauce was delivered. I could have had my own little pan of these items and been happy. I doubled up on a portion of pot stickers since one was not enough.

The noodles and broccoli/stir fry veggies were great. I wish they went back to when they only served the steamed broccoli since that was more to my liking. And the sweetness of the noodles does not bother me at all. One thing that did annoy me was the starchiness and stickiness of the noodles had them clinging to the serving tongs so it was hard to plop a pile on my plate without using a fork to free them.

The skewers of meat came around one after the other – pork, beef, chicken, and shrimp. Important note to any chicken skewer lovers – the chicken indeed has been discontinued. It was supposed to have disappeared when we dined there on 4/30/14 but they still had chicken in inventory so it was to be served through the end of the week. I texted a Dis pal and let her know and I could feel her disappointment when I shared the sad news. Considering that I really only eat the chicken and beef this considerably diminishes my choices. I like shrimp but I’m not up to the effort to peel it and eat it so I pass.
A man with skewers of meat was a lovely sight to my hubby!

My pictures are not the best from dinner. It was so dark that I couldn’t tell that I needed to make adjustments for the low light. Be that as it may I will point out what you see on my plate. I realize that digging in and consuming the courses as they are delivered is customary here especially since they keep the food coming. However, the OCD part of me has to serve once, photograph once, and eat once. I hate messes and clutter and I don’t want to share photos that have sauce and meat carcasses splattered across my plate. So now that I’ve revealed the sickness that is inside me here’s what’s cooking:

DSCN9997.jpg

Starting at the top of the plate… I don’t think anyone will doubt that is broccoli, grilled chicken, sirloin steak, pork loin, a coriander chicken wing, a pork pot sticker/dumpling, a pile of noodles. Everything was pretty decent, even the pork this time.

DSCN9999.jpg

I rotated the plate to take a different angle photo and you can see that I have now added peanut sauce to the grilled sirloin. I wish I had dumped more of that awesome sauce over the meat. Between Paula and me, I think we finished the majority of the sauce.

All meats are cooked over an oak grill according to the menus. I’ve never seen them putting oak on the fires but I won’t contest those facts.
The final course was the ever amazing (but not Raglan Road Ger’s level amazing) bread pudding a la mode with banana foster sauce. I’m just glad that there were a few people at our table who didn’t fight me for this.

We were still dining during Wishes but we were off to the side and not near the windows. We could see the glow of the fireworks but I don’t think they had the soundtrack playing or at least we couldn’t hear it from where we were seated. I recall last time they dimmed the lights and played the soundtrack but I was looking for the same this time and noticed it didn’t happen.
One other entertainment note… The ukulele lady did her thing with promenading the kids around but I don’t think I saw the coconut races. Do they still do those? Maybe I had too many pina coladas (hard to do with only ONE!) and didn’t notice a lot that evening. We did stay and chat until we were nearly the last group in the restaurant. We noticed that they seated and turned around the table next to us twice while we were there.

It was great to see Chef Eddie that evening as well. Here’s a couple group photos.

Using TiW we saved $16.75. At nearly $38 per adult (non discounted) I don’t think this place holds that much value for me. I estimate that I paid $49.99 per pound for the sirloin so I’d better step it up and add more meat to my plate next time or smuggle a cooler into my bag and fill the thing with bread pudding.

Next Up: The Mara Breakfast

Well, look at that… I fell behind again! :rolleyes1

I LOVE Tusker House! LOL It's a staple on our trips! I'm actually kinda bummed we won't be doing any time at AK just because I'll miss TH. I love the Beef Bobotie and they have a few other things I can't think of now that I enjoy. And that JUICE! YUMMY! :)

Yak & Yeti is a place I'm dying to try, but it hasn't happened yet. I'm sooooo sorry that you had to save the world when you could have been enjoying a yummy snack!

I've been trying to read this all evening, but it just hasn't happened, so I will post more later when I catch up some more!

We love Ohana, its a must when we go to Disney..Now we only have a few table service meals the reast is quick service so we starve all day then splurge that evening..:lmao:

I haven't to Ohana since I went with my friend back in Sept 2012. Like you there are things I like and things I really don't care for, however overall it is still a solid meal with a relaxing atmosphere. I am going to have to try RR bread pudding, we always get the pavlova there. We will be returning to Ohana this December with my in laws and the baby and cannot wait!!

Oops, it seems like I'm a whole day's worth of meals behind, including two of my favorites.

Kona - Due to our mutual love for the pancakes and the fact that I have eaten here with you on my last two trips, I now associate Kona's breakfast with you. It will seem very strange being there without you in October. :sad1: Are you sure you can't pop in for breakfast? I think those pancakes are totally worth a cross-country trip, aren't they??? ;)

Liberty Tree Tavern - While I admire your restraint in passing on your much-loved pot roast, I was amazed by it when our server didn't come through with the Ooey Gooey. If it had been me, I'm afraid a manhunt would have ensued, as I would not have forfeited so peacefully.

'Ohana - I was really torn on this one. I sooo enjoyed having dinner with you guys every night but my stubbornness won out on this one. I guess I'm still not ready to let bygones be bygones when it comes to 'Ohana. ;) But in the end, I had one of my favorite meals of the trip at Artist Point that night so I guess, all's well that ends well. However, I am a little jealous of your pina colada.

Yay - you got your just desserts ;)
The bread pudding at 'Ohana is worth getting an ADR for!
I will add for any vegetarians reading, 'Ohana is still a great option, the provided me with an excellent meal as an alternative
Boy the noodles and broccoli look yummy :goodvibes
Great group shot of you all as well

Well, discontinued chicken kind of messes with my love of 'Ohana. I had no idea that was happening. Of course the bread pudding is the main reason for this ADR ever, but chicken and steak are the two meats most of us eat. The kids won't touch the shrimp or pork, and Dude even balks at the steak. He's got a real food texture thing going on and chicken is his go-to. When that boy was five I once timed him at 24 minutes chewing a single piece of pork. I kept telling him to swallow it and he kept saying he wasn't done yet.

I love shrimp but you're right, way too much effort for it here.

This makes a difficult choice for my fantasy-trip MK dinner. We like to leave the park and hit a monorail resort for dinner on our MK night and 'Ohana has always been it for the dessert. Have to go read allears menus again.

'Ohana was a fun meal and will probably enter our dining rotation.

I have heard that they didn't keep the chicken discontinued as there were complaints about it being gone...

Loving your piña colada sounds good right now ... Oh wait it's only 10 am here so ignore that thought LOL I like Ohana's wings , potstickers, meats and can always eat a bit of the noodles. I'm not a fan of peel and eat shrimp although my husband from the SC loves them so will be going back this next trip.
Another great evening with fabulous company and you finally got a dessert which made me happy for you!!
(( cocktail and dessert win win ))

Debby

How come I was NOT told this was in progress? I am devastated. MICHAEL...help me, here, please!

I's bed time for me (long week so far), but I will be back to catch up...I promise.

Love you guys.

So, we just ate at LTT yesterday for the first time. The Colony salad was delicious and the obey, gooey, toffee cake..... Well lets just say I can see why it was a tragedy you didn't get any. It was amazing! I understand all the hype now, and I think we have a new favorite MK lunch spot!

I am caught up (I skipped the chatter).

I'm sorry the menu changed a bit at Jiko and that the ribs were not as amazing as they had been in the past. You all look wonderful though.

Tusker House was a huge disappointment for us two weeks ago. We felt the variety was not nearly what it used to be. And I am so with you on the Krispy Kreme donuts and the donut holes. Seriously? Just NOT the same.

I'm with you...love Yak & Yeti (the girls and me ate there this trip too). We are skipping it in September as of now but I may add it in since I cancelled our two signature meals.

WOW! That is all I can say on Yachtsman. What the heck happened? I know how much you and I have enjoyed it in the past.

Kona...a definite favorite and can't wait for my coffee there and our breakfast. I agree with Michael...I could eat there every breakfast meal of the trip.

You looked like you all had a good time at Ohana. As you know, we were not impressed and will not go back. But Mark would like to go just for that dessert.
