Today I ran the Baystate Marathon with hopes of qualifying for Boston. I needed to run 4:00:59. It was a bit chilly - mid 30s at the start and got quite windy for the second half of the race. The temps were great, the wind not so much. I was right on track thru 20 miles I went thru at 3:01. I had an hour to run the last 10K.

My legs were feeling very tight, but I kept trying to stay at a 9 min mile pace. I had my Garmin set to show me my lap time every 1/2 mile so I could tell if I was on track. I began to slow a bit, but still was running around 9:30 which would get me in on time. My Garmin lost the satellite at mile 22 so I lost track of my pace. I was able to check my time at the mile markers and knew that I was continuing to slow down. At 25 miles I still had 12 minutes to make it in. My legs were getting more tired and tight, but I kept telling myself not to give in. The race finishes in the minor league baseball stadium so we entered the stadium and had to run the perimeter on the warning track. I tried to kick it in a bit because I knew it would be close. My Garmin only showed me the hours and minutes, but not the seconds, so I wasn't sure exactly how much time I had. I turned the last corner and could see the finish line, but I couldn't see the clock. With about 10 yards to go my quads completely locked up and I toppled forward landing with a splat on my hands and knees. I tried to crawl, but the finish line volunteers kept trying to help me to stand. I couldn't stand so I kept begging them to let me crawl. Finally I crossed the line doing some sort of crab-like crawl with the volunteers holding my arms and me moving my legs. It was so extremely embarrassing. As soon as I crossed the EMTs got me on a stretcher and took me away. I stopped the time on my Garmin. When I got into the back room the nurses and doctors were wonderful helping me. I felt fine, my legs actually were Ok by then too. I couldn't focus my eyes enough to see the time on my Garmin. Eventually my husband and 2 DD3s were led in. Luckily the girls didn't see me fall, though my husband did and was quite freaked out, though he said he was yelling at me to keep going when I was trying to crawl. He said the whole stadium was cheering for me. His only regret was that he didn't take a picture of me while I was crawling. NICE!! I'm sure I'll be in the pictures of the other finishers who ran by me. My husband checked the time on my Garmin and it was 4:02. I missed qualifying by a minute. Actually my official chip time was 4:01:57, so I missed it by 58 seconds. After an hour and a Gatorade they let me go. In talking about it afterwards, my husband and I decided I probably wouldn't have made it in time even if I hadn't fallen. I really don't think I was on the ground for a minute. How absolutely frustrating. On the one hand it's a PR by 25 minutes, but I'm really disappointed.

I'm not sure what's next for me. I guess I'll take a few days to see how I feel. Thanks for reading.

Oh no need for disappointment. You ran the race and you FINISHED!:cheer2:
You have gone where many have not. You should be proud of yourself. I'm proud of you and I don't really know you, but I have been running for 10 months now and I know it take work and dedication to do what you have. Stand proud!

WOW! What an amazing story. I am sorry about the BQ, its hard to be so close and yet so far.

I failed to get a PR on a half this spring due to a muscle spasm and it left me feeling really empty and a little depressed for several weeks afterwards. In hind sight, I should have signed up for the next race in my local area and just gone and had fun - no watch, no garmin, just fun. But instead, I let it sour me to racing for several months. I wish I hadn't done that.

Hang in there, you were too close to give up now. Do it for all of us who will never be close enough to even try to qualify for Boston! But when you are ready - and in the mean time, take the watch off and fall back in love with running.

Thank you for sharing your story.

I'm still proud of you. You ran a race and did very well. You are also attempting something many, many people don't have the courage to ever try.

You were a minute off your dream time. My best was about 11 minutes off of my dream time. Keep trying, you're so close. Like a pp said, fall back in love with running and go for it.

Cindy - I was thinking of you today at my Halloween party.
I am so sorry you missed qualifiying for Boston. That really stinks!
But finishing the way you did?
And not being badly injured -AWESOME!:cheer2:

And you will qualify for Boston. Today was just not the day.

Cindy - Congratulations on an amazing PR! And I'm glad that you are ok - that had to be really scary to have your legs just stop working. I'm sure you must be so frustrated to have missed a BQ by less than a minute. But even though you didn't make it today, now you know that you can definitely do it.

 INCREDIBLE RACE CINDY! I'm so sorry you missed BQ...but in my book you are an absolute winner and what tenacity you showed. I had no idea you were putting in that kind of time and pace, sorry I haven't been keeping up on your training. I'm just simply impressed with your performance.

Cindy - Wow!! What a mixed bag of emotions. I'm so proud of your gutty performance and know how hard you worked for it. That's a fabulous race and a great PR. Lots to feel great about.

But...

Don't let the "but" overshadow your accomplishment. Give yourself a few days to mourn and then focus on the positives. I'm sure you can reach your goal on down the road.

Great effort!!!

Cindy, sorry about missing the BQ but the more important thing is that you were not injured and that you DID finish. And remember, if you were that close, the next time it is yours!!!! Great job Cindy and thanks for sharing your inspiring story with us.

 Cindy, I'm so proud of you!:cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: As I read each line of your report, I kept leaning in closer to the computer (I couldn't jump forward and read the final outcome). I know you're disappointed about the BQ and I'm sorry. You were so close, so I know that the next race will be yours and you'll be on your way! You are such an inspiration and your ability to fall and still try to get across the line, even with legs that weren't working, is an amazing one. Congrats, on a job well done!

Cindy, Great job!:cheer2: :cheer2: I know that not BQ is a huge disappointment, but it will happen next race! So glad that you are not injured :goodvibes And you DID PR!! :yay: :woohoo:

Cindy - Congrats on your race and your PR! Sorry you missed qualifying for Boston. I'm glad you weren't seriously hurt from your fall.

Cindy, you ROCK!! That is an amazing time!! I am so so sorry that you did not qualify for Boston. I am sure you are very disappointed. Time will help take the sting away. But be proud of yourself that you shaved 25 minutes off your PR! That is huge!!

Becky

Cindy That fact that you dragged yourself across the line is amazing! I can't imagine running a marathon, let alone qualifying for Boston. Please be proud of what you accomplished, despite the temporary setback.

You may or may not want to hear this, depending on how you feel about your race, but I've read on other forums that if you miss a BQ time by a few minutes and feel that there may have been extenuating circumstances (like tripping just short of the finish line), you can send your time, along with a letter to the BAA, and they will consider you for entry. I guess it all depends on how you feel about Boston - is getting there half the fun? (qualifying on your own); or is it just about the Boston experience? (doesn't matter how you get there, but you ran Boston)

Not sure if you have other marathons planned in the near future for a second chance at qualifying, but being so close, I'm sure you could do it "by the book" if you want to. Good luck. :thumbsup2

Cindy, that was an absolutely amazing story, and an amazing time. I'm so sorry you didn't make the BQ, but you had quite the race. You should be so proud. You represented us WISHers well. WTG! :thumbsup2

Great effort Cindylou. BQ is right there in front of you. I bet you make it next time out!

Congrats on the great race. :worship:

I can only dream of ever BQ - I know that won't take the sting out of it, but even getting close is something that I am in awe of. :worship: WAY TO GO!!!!!! :woohoo: And way to fight for what you want! I am sure that you will remember the determination you had more than your missed BQ.
