Needless to say we're freaking out. My sis, kids and I have plans to be at BC from 7/25-29. She got a notice to appear for jury duty on 7/25. She's planning to call the courthouse on Mon. to see if they can reschedule her. Has anyone ever been granted this request due to a vacation? Will they think that's not sufficient excuse? If anyone has any suggestions, please help. Thanks so much.

I have a friend whose husband got a summons for when they were on vacation. They rescheduled it for after they came back.

don't lose sleep. they will move her with proof of scheduled planned trip.

Sorry for the scare~ Sounds as though she'll be able to postpone it. I sure hope so~
:grouphug:

A juror is of no use if angry because they've missed their vacation due to jury duty. I don't think any state compels service on the first assigned date.

It all depends on the state, but I've never heard of anyone who *hasn't* gotten it postposed for any of the reasons, including a scheduled vacation, so I doubt there will be a problem-- you'd be surprised how many excuses will get someone out of jury duty entirely (for the reason the poster posted above-- noone wants a disgruntled juror on the panel!)

It depends on the court. MY DS got called to Jury Duty while a student at MSU. He was told he had to "come home and serve" so he did.

Best wishes in your case.

Wow, Pinnie. When I got a summons while in college, I got out of it with no problem just by telling them I was away at school.

That happened to me on two different trips. I just showed the judge the copy of my hotel reservation and they rescheduled me. I hope things work out.

Here in Georgia, you get one chance to postpone for a valid reason. My husband got his notice and it turned out that was for his first day at work and he was scheduled to travel. He wrote a letter and faxed it in. Excused immediately. He did serve the next month.

I intern at a federal court and help out in the jury department - if you return your summons questionaire with a note saying you'll be away and attach with it your itinerary and proof that you already paid for air fare or your hotel, you should be able to postpone till a later date (although, there is a chance depending on your pool number that you may not even be needed anyway!)

In Jan I got a jury summons it was for the beginning of Feb and we had our Hawaii trip planned for the end of Feb.

My DH said I should just go and get it over with. Well I have a very high imangination and was thinking up all sort of wild things--what if I get on a case and wind up shut up in a hotel and not being able to go etc etc

well we can reschedule once and you get to pick the dates but you better show up then or else!!!!

So by picking my own dates I only had 2 days instead of 3 whcih was nice but I just hated being there.

I never got called for anything expect for luch which was fine with me!!!

I hope I never get called again!!

This was for Milwaukee WI court

When you contact them be brief and make sure to emphasize you do want to serve, you just cannot on that date. They don't like it when people are just trying to come up with excuses not to serve, but should have no problem accommodating your already booked vacation. I had scheduled a trip out of the country when I was called for jury duty and it was no big deal at all to change it.

I also got a summons for jury duty during my '98 WDW trip. It was for once a week the same month for Fed. Court. I simply faxed them a letter with a copy of my airline ticket ( we booked that trip 9 months out) and they excused me from that one week. No problem. And for college students living away ffrom home, they will postpone you (not excuse you completely) at their discretion to an available time. My DS got called, he filled out the paperwork saying he was at school during that time 100 miles away. The postponed til a later time (still to be named).

This was my experience. I received summons in Dec 2002 to serve in Jan. 2003. I had just enrolled in a college program and paid my tuition. I called was allowed to fax my school reciept and was told I would be rescheduled sometime in the summer. Well, I get scheduled in June--then it gets canceled due to no cases and I was rescheduled for July--right when hubby and I were planning a 2 week Las Vegas/Disneyland trip. I called the courthouse and explained the trip. Was told they could reschedule in August--after my classes started. I again explained about school and was asked when my classes ended. I was scheduled to go in the Monday after classes let out for Christmas holidays. They were very willing to work with me, but I was the first name called out and out of the initial 12 called and questioned I was one of two who was not dismissed. Had to do a 2-day trial, but I feel my postponement moved me up on the list to be called. There were nearly 100 people in the room with me that day as potential jurors.

This just happened to me a few weeks ago!! I got my notice for jury duty and was scheduled for June 9 - and June 9 was when we were leaving for Disney!!! I just wrote a note and they rescheduled me with no problems!!

Good luck!!!

:cool1:

DW got a jury summons a couple of years ago. It was scheduled for a time when we would be on vacation. We had our airline tickets purchased and hotel reserved. I called and they said to send photo copies of the tickets, etc.. They excussed her from jury duty and she was not given another date.

Thanks for starting this thread... my daughter, 20, is supposed to go in on August 8th. Our vacation (with reservations at BCV and airfare bought months out) starts August 14. She sent back the top of her letter already and I had just assumed she could take the information with her on the 8th. Is that a bad idea? Or should she call and explain before that time?

What a coincidence that Magic2000 had the exact same situation, jury duty on departure date. You can imagine my sister's dismay when she read the date and recognized it as the check-in date at the Beach Club! I truly appreciate all the suggestions, and moral support. I will definately report back when I know the final verdict (pun intended).

We just had a similar problem. My DH was scheduled for jury duty during a DW vacation we already had planned for the end of this month. In Mass the postcard comes with a place to reschedule if that day is not convenient so we changed it to the end of Aug. Forgot all about it & changed our trip to the end of Aug. to take advantage of free dining & the second postcard came saying his jury duty had been changed to Aug. 29 & couldn't be changed again BY LAW! I started freaking out about it but DH called the courthouse & explained. The court officer had an attitude & said "well when WOULD you like to appear???" but that's ok because he changed it to the middle of Sept. so we are all set!
