Ok, I just made the phone call to the reassignment office and my younger DS and DD were reassigned to the school that we requested!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I'm in total shock, I thought for sure that we would be denied.
DH was convinced that we would be denied.
Last week when I posted about my DD's K teacher, I was venting. I didn't know things would get so interesting.
Here is the story, I'll make it as brief as possible.
Back in May, I applied for my two younger children to be reassigned to another school. Over the summer, I called the reassignment office to learn of any progress, but was told that I wouldn't hear until late July. We received a letter the same day that we returned from vacation telling us that our request was denied.
After this, I wrote a letter to Governor Bush. I received a response from the Commissioner of Education's office basically blowing me off and giving me names and phone numbers, which I already had. I responded to their letter and never heard from them again.
In early August, I was flipping channels and came upon our school board's public meeting on PBS. During this meeting, the superintendent said that they would be revising the reassignment applications once again, as some schools did have capacity for additional students. Two days later, I called the reassignment office again and asked when this would begin. I was told that I knew more than they did, as their office didn't get such information. I was given some more phone numbers to contact, it was a waste of time. Apparently, no one could help me.
At this point, I decided to write a letter to the Superintendent of our school board. I addressed it to him and apparently he must have read it. I received a letter from him explaining that our situation was being researched. Last Tuesday, I received a call from the reassignment office asking us to come in for a meeting with the hardship committee. This is actually part of the process if your request is initially denied. We went to our meeting yesterday afternoon and I was shocked to see that each committee member had a copy of my letter to the Super.
We were told to call today after 1:00 p.m. to find out if we were approved or denied.
Since this was going on in the sidelines, I decided to wait on getting my DD moved to another teacher. It just would have been too much change for her to handle in less than two weeks. I will get her and DS registered at the new school tomorrow and they will start on Monday.
I'm glad this is over. We are totally convinced that our approval was a situation of "the squeaky wheel gets the grease". It took a lot of work on my part, but I wanted to do all within my power to make the change possible. Even if they hadn't approved us, I didn't want any "what if I" questions (I tend to do that to myself).
I still can't believe it!
Thanks all for your concern and good wishes. It feels good knowing that I can come here and share my concerns.

Sometimes, the 'greasy wheel' is the only way to go! If we, as parents, don't stick up and fight for our kids, who will?!
I hope both of your kids enjoy their new school.
