We need a room for one night (flying in late on a Friday then checking in to the HRH on Saturday morning). What are the pros/cons of the Doubletree vs. Holiday Inn? Distance-wise, it looks like a toss up. Price--HI wins.

Doubletree is way closer. It is literally across the street from the entrance. Holiday inn is back a little more maybe 1/4 to 1/2 mile. Doubletree has tons of fees (internet, parking etc.) I don't think the Holiday Inn does. I stayed at the Hampton Inn which is about 1/2 mile or so north of the doubletree and it was nice. There is a Quality Inn next to it all well that looked acceptable. These two properties both have free internet/ parking and breakfast included. The hampton had mini fridges, microwave and safe for laptops.

I would take the holiday Inn if it has the amenities you like otherwise consider the holiday inn or quality hotel. They are walking distance from parks and have free shuttles too.

If it is the Holiday Inn and Suites across from Universal be careful..they were renovating when we stayed there ( one night before our Hard Rock stay ) . Not sure if they are done..
However we LOVED LOVED LOVED the room size ( 4 Times the Hard Rock ) and the employees there were great. I would have stayed there, renovations and all, the whole time but we wanted the HP early admittance.

Holiday inn is STILL renovating we were just there..we stayed right behind them at the Hyatt (we had 2 nights free rooms with Hyatt so that was the decision maker for us, that and the fact that we had 6 people to accomodate...)

We had GREAT service, the breakfast while just basic continental was pretty good to start the day..if you want a bigger breakfast both TGIF and Cracker Barrel do breakfast and are in the parking lot...(TGIF was buffet style for 6.99 per person I believe) The room service was decent and priced well....they gave us 2 free drinks in the lounge EACH night we stayed (4nights) they just took over this hotel so it is not a typical Hyatt full bar sadly...just beer and wine.

The guys at the front desk our first 3 nights were AWESOME but they did tell me they were "on loan" from another hotel" our last night was a woman and it got CRAZY busy with a senior tour group that came in and sadly service suffered.

The walk to US very easy..just use crosswalks :)

Unless they moved, the Holiday Inn is right next to the Doubletree and the exact same distance from Universal. We stayed at the HI and it was OK. I'm glad to hear that they are renovating because it definitely needed it. HI renovations are usually VERY nice from our experience.
