On our recent trip, we tried our hardest to bribe him with going to see Bear at MGM. No Dice! But we talked and talked about the potty when we got home. He cried and cried to go back to Disney World. Actually he cried when we left. We told him that if he learned to poo-poo on the potty, he could go back. We'll it took all summer, but a few weeks ago he did and has been doing it ever since. So, my in-laws are rewarding him since they said that they would. We are going back in May 05. And If you ask him, he'll say he's going because he poo-poos in the potty. And it only took 7.5 years.

We are also taking a side trip to universal because my younger son who is also autistic is spelling universal everything! It's quite funny. So Pop's has decided that he needs to see universal really big!

I'm so excited about the whole thing.

That's great that your son's grandparents will take them or pay for DW because of being potty trained/ or going thru the potty training process.
It sounds like his grandparents are going to follow thru on the trip.

Unfortunately, my parents( my children's grandparents) gave false promises to take or pay for my children to go to DW also to get them potty trained. I have 7 yr. old special needs/disabled twins. My ds, who is high functioning autistic has been already potty trained for 2 and a half yrs. now. The false incentives ( which I didn't know they were false at the time), to get my daughter to be potty trained. My dear mother kept telling my kids she will send them to DW. then dm said "Oh maybe someday". I asked my dm when"someday " was going to be since the kids wanted to go soon. My dm said maybe 10 yrs. from now. Well, I was very angry and frustrated from all this from my own mother, that I refered my dd thru Make-A- Wish. My dd was approved b/c of her heart condition- considered life- threatening. Yes, this is a true story.

Anyways, out of my anger and frustration of my own parents, I, my dh, ds, and dd got to go DW this past June via Make- A -Wish.
My kids have never been to DW before and we couldn't afford to pay for them ourselves. Incentive was for my dd, who has a complex congenital heart defect and will need another surgery in the future plus she also has some developmental delays. My dd has been potty trained about one and a half yrs. now.

I feel very blessed that my dd was approved via MAW.

Sorry about the venting, but I just needed to say all this.
My dear parents are the same parents that would not even pay a little bit of my wedding 11 yrs. ago. My husband and I paid the whole wedding ourselves, and I'm the only child in my family! I love my parents dearly, but I guess this is how they are!

Anyways, if you can believe my dm was happy we got approved via MAW foundation. Guess it took the financial burden off of her to follow thru on the trip.

In conclusion, be careful of grandparents that give false promises to their grandchildren to go to DW to get them potty trained!

To saymama,

Very glad to hear your son is potty trained. It is so difficult to potty train special needs kids. I've been there, done that. Kudos to you that you did it! Yea!!!
Great news!!!!

I'm so sorry about your mom acting like a butt and most of all lying to the kids. I think that we are safe though. They paid for the whole vacation 3yrs ago and the one this past June. My FIL himself said, he never actually expected to go back so soon, but he's ready to make the reservations and is actually talking more about it to the kids than we are. We told ds that he'd have to wait until school was over for us to go because he thought he got to go right then and there. So on the first day of school, he asked to go in the van. When I asked where he was going, he said to Disney world. In his mind school was over, so it was time to go.

For us, Disney truly is a magical place. It helps bring out the best in my kids!

The boys got off the bus - the first day of school - one of them says:
"Phew. I'm glad we don't have to back there again"
His brother replies:
"Yep...it's great we know everything already"....

*sigh*
It's gonna be a looooonnnng year;);)

Sorry I love that one.. My daughter (autistic) would do the EXACT Same thing...LOL.. Thanks for the laugh..
She has also been known to take our cross all the days off the calendar till our trip, and take the paper count down chain down.. To prove that once all these are gone we can go..

My DS is autistic too...and also tries to manipulate the situation. He loves bubble baths, so I took five bottles of bubble bath on our Magic cruise last year...after the first night he was yelling for more bubbles every two seconds, I couldn't figure it out...finally I realized that he'd used ALL the bubbles the first night and then refilled the bottles with water so I wouldn't catch on when I poured it in the tub. I need to do a better job on next time. I couldn't beleive the grandparents not following through story...lying to a disabled child ???? To the OP, congrats on the potty training, I know it is a huge issue.

Thanks, saymama and Wide Awake for understanding and your empathy for me and my familly with my children's grandparents lying/ not following thru with the WDW trip.
Unfortunately, my dear mom has not followed thru on other things she had promised in the past( before my kids were born).
I guess it's a disfunctional family thing in my family- at least with my parents.
Tho, this past summer, my dear mom offered and did pay for her, dd,ds, and I to go to Kiddieland ( a very small amusement park in Chicago). I think ticket admission is only $15 each person. so about $60 or $70 total.
Sometimes I wonder why my mom opens her mouth on telling my kids certain things and then not following thru? If she can keep her mouth shut and only open it when she can really follow- thru, that would be fine.
Anyways, enough said. My dh, dd,ds, and I were just very blessed that MAW was able to follow-thru and make our WDW trip special for us and cared.
:sunny:
PS. My ds is also autistic (my dd's twin). And he has a thing for bubble bath, too. Except he likes to take different liquid soaps and liquid bubble bath and pour about a capful of each in a pail/ container and pretend he's making some kind "soup" or his "special shampoo" out of it. It's kinda cute. Just as long as he keeps it in the tub when he's bathing.
