OFFICIAL New Animal Kingdom Experiences UPDATE 5/28: Reports from first night in Post #2

I've begun to update this again now that I have returned from my trip. It is hard to get back into it since I have not got over my case of the post Disney grumps.

Does anyone know yet when the official opening day for everything is? It just says Memorial Day Weekend on the parks blog. Does that mean Thursday or Friday or Saturday or what?

As I said above, I just returned from a recent Disney trip where I had planned on being in AK on Earth Day, when ROL and the nighttime experiences were originally supposed to open. The park was incredibly packed that day (the worst I've ever seen by far) and I overheard many guests talking about watching ROL. I think that meant a lot of people didn't hear about the nighttime activities being pushed back and guests flocked to the park. Anyway, I got to thinking on a different thread what my strategy would be for Memorial Day weekend now that I had a very packed experience at AK.

I figured I would go ahead and share that strategy here in case anyone is planning on attending that weekend. Hopefully someone can get some use out of it.

Full day AK Memorial Day Weekend Strategy:

Fastpasses:

I would book these as early as possible. I would book one for the nighttime safari. I would book another for midday Kali (if you are into water rides), it will most likely be very hot that day and a midday Kali soaking would probably be a good idea. If fastpasses are available for the Jungle Book show I'd book one for that, otherwise I'd use it for midday for EE or Dinosaur.

ADRs:

I would also book an early dinner ADR at Tusker House, Yak and Yeti or Tiffin's. The day will most likely be hot and if you plan to spend the entire day at AK, an early dinner inside an air conditioned restaurant will be just the ticket to refresh you and your party for the night's fun. If dining packages are available for the Jungle Book show I'd try for one.

Ride Strategy:

We went straight to KS at rope drop on Earth Day and we still had to wait about 15-20 minutes. The line took about an hour to build to 40 minutes around 10, if I'm remembering correctly. So instead of doing that, I'd go straight to EE and get a few rides in and then head to KS. If you have to wait for KS either way, it is probably best to get in a few trips up Everest first. After the KS I'd try to meet any characters that I wanted to see or else go to the rides in Dino Land.

Once the heat of the day hits I'd start a show rotation and watch Bug's Life, Nemo and FOTLK which are all in air conditioned theaters. I'd also watch Flights of Wonder, while not indoors there is a roof to keep the sun away and there are usually fans running in the theater.

Whenever there was a gap in my fastpasses and show schedule I'd hit the animal trails.

After my dinner ADR was finished, I would just enjoy the atmosphere and all the street parties while making sure to see the tree show. You should have a fastpass at this point for the nighttime safari. If there will be multiple Jungle Book shows I'd try for the latest and hope for the best, but I'd fully expect the night to be very crowded and just try to go with the flow.

What does everyone think? Anyone have any suggestions? Anyone planning on going to AK Memorial Day Weekend?

This is a fantastic strategy if you ask me. I actually copied this into my disney notes pages so I can refer to it easily. Hmmmm methinks the wdw bloggers have got some competition :ssst:

Friday the 27th.

At this point I have plans to be there for Memorial Day unless something happens to make me cancel them (like they push back the nighttime offerings yet again). Made sure I made my plans at a hotel with free cancellation since I now have a nonrefundable reservation for this weekend... will just be enjoying AK in its current state and more Flower and Garden fun. Any weekend at Disney is better than a weekend at home! :flower1:

I really appreciate the touring strategy @OhioStateBuckeye. Off to look for some decent reservations now...

Just wanted to say I listened to Jim Hill's latest podcast and he says Rivers of Light may not open until September. He also says they will be adding Jungle Book elements to the rivers of light show. Take it with a grain of salt though its Jim Hill.

Well...I'm probably doing a September trip since my APs expire mid September. Let it begin again...hahaha

I just checked the dining times for August 6 for the day we are going. They have updated times for dining that day past 5pm. I was able to get a later time. But they have not changed the times for the park yet.

it looks like Harambe Acrobats will start next week as soft opening for the new entertainment coming Memorial Day Weekend. Some other atmosphere entertainment that's included with the AK @ night will also start as a "surprise" for visitors. Probably the Karibu Sisters and/or the Harambe Soccer Meerkats. I'm guessing they have to have these CM actually working now since they were hired to start on Earth Day.
The times will not be posted on the times guide and it'll just be a surprise performance for guests

Does anyone have any idea what time the tree will be lighted and the other activities will start on May 27th?

update to my last post. the Harambe acrobats are in the times guide starting next week.
Here are there times
NEW! Harambe Acrobats in Africa . . . . . . . . 2:00pm, 3:00pm, 4:00pm, 5:00pm

I'm not sure when the tree will be lighted for the first time, but several podcasters attended a media preview event and they were told that the tree of life shows will be random. They don't want a crowd gathering in front of the tree for the show.

I just got a fast pass for KS for June 8 for 8:15 pm - 9:15 pm. So maybe I will see a real sunset and a fake sunset?! lol

Good to know...I don't know why in my mind I figured they would just leave it lit, once it was lit. Kind of like the castle I guess.

Yes! Looks like dining hours for Yak & Yeti have been extended to 8:00pm through August 20th.
I'm anxiously waiting for them to extend September's hours too - trying to get a later Yak & Yeti ADR at the end of the month.:hyper:
