OFFICIAL D23 Membership available for all Disney fans--Will you join too? UPDATE

I joined for the magazine but the merchandise is ridiculous. I'll complain about the pen all day long thank you very much. It just shows yet again that Disney management hasn't got a clue how to "reward" loyalty.

Well I took the plunge. I think I need to find the nearest Disneyholics Anonymous group and go to a meeting.

I don't think I will join either. It seems a little pricey. Plus all the info that is in the magazine is probably on these boards somewhere.

I joined and I'm thrilled about it! Why do so many of you seem to be so melancholy about joining?! :confused3 This is exciting, people!

If you buy each magazine seperately at $15 a pop, all 4 come to around $60....so really, minus the mags, the "membership" is only around $15.

I think it's great that they are offering merchandise of all different values. Yes, my jaw dropped when I saw the price of the pen and I certainly can't afford it but I think it's cool...if someone wants to spend that much, go for it! I will be happy with my t-shirt and pin.

I just joined....call me a sucker but I love Disney. I already made a special trip to Barnes and Noble just for the magazine today. I have not looked at the merchandise but doubtful I will spend any more money right at this time since our annual pilgrimage is coming up in April!

I'm figuring the website is now overloaded. When you try to buy, (i have just tried to gift) it just comes up with error messages.

Since the charter membership is opened until the end of the year, I think I'll wait and ask for a membership for our anniversary.

Bobbi:goodvibes

I'm kind of on the fence but will probably do it...after all, my organization for my nursing specialty is $ 30 more a year and you don't get as much!;) ..

If I decide later it's not worth it, I just won't renew next year.

Anyone know what the significance of the number 23 is with this?

Here's part of the press release that should answer your question:

"We have a fantastic legacy that started in 1923 and is based on timeless stories, beloved characters and unforgettable experiences, but it's our fans that keep the spirit of Disney alive year after year, generation after generation," said Disney President and CEO Bob Iger at the Company's annual shareholder's meeting. "D23 is our way of saying 'thank you' and celebrating our fans, who bring the magic of Disney to life every day in every corner of the world."

I was in the Disney Store today and the magazine was on sale for $15.99, so you do not need to be a member to get it.

Yes, $15.95. It's on sale exclusively at B&N outside of Disney (meaning the parks, DisneyShopping.com and the Disney Store). Anyone can purchase it, but only members will have the ability to purchase back-issues (not that it means that much).

I think I'm going to have to wait to see what the magazine is like. If the magazine is really amazing with all kinds of rare, never before seen photos and behind the scenes information previously known only to the true Disney insiders, I may go for it.

I've had the magazine for almost a week now and I believe it is. I think it's worth every penny. There are other magazines out there that charge more for less, believe it or not and there is not and will not be any advertisements in it. The magazine is meant to be a collectible in itself. It covers archives stuff in addition to future stuff. it's meant for people who want to explore the disney archives or go backstage at disney on broadway or see what a typical day at pixar studios is like. it's assumed you know who oswald is. you can buy dave smith's disney a-z for that stuff.

A mystery item, membership card/certificate/what have you, and the opportunity to buy more exclusive items in the future aren't real draws for me and I doubt I'll be able to make it to the Expo.

Just as an aside, the mystery item is a collectible from the new Walt Disney Archives Collection who will primarily manufacture limited edition replicas of items inside the disney archive. you'll find out what it is soon enough, but all that's known right now is it's not a pin. it's something that can sit on a shelf.

as for not attending D23 Expo (which you can do with or without membership, although being a member gives more privileges), there were be localized events (to some extent) as well as occasional in-park events.

I joined! :cool1: Personally, I am excited about having access to the merchandise. I have just recently gotten into Disney collectibles and some of the exclusive items are awesome for collectors! I am already making a list of things I want. First will be a couple of t-shirts to wear on my May trip :)

I'm in, I joined at the crack of dawn this morning and don't regret it at all.

I've seen some discussions in other sections of this forum that are outlandish, as if some folks think its their right to be in this club and upset because its not what they wanted it to be.

Oh well, I'm happy.

I never even got my email. :sad1: I don't know if I'll join. I'll have to poke around the website and see if there is anything I want besides the magazines. I know I'm not going to DL this fall.

I'm glad you're happy...

I've read a few of the other posts and have to say honestly that you're one end of the spectrum...and I'm not sure people think they have a right to be in the club, but you are right that it wasn't what a lot of people hoped for, including myself. I likely won't join because I live in Canada and between the exchange rate and the usual extra amount charged due to being non-U.S., it will just be too much for me to justify. That doesn't mean it doesn't appeal to me though...I hope the Disney Stores in Canada will have the glossy as I'd like to see it...although if I see it I'm pretty sure it will be mine! :goodvibes
