Official American Idol Season 7: Top 10 to ??

I just realized what else was odd about David A.'s song choice.

Weren't they supposed to pick songs from their birth years? So, wasn't David supposed to pick a song from 1990? "You're The Voice" came out in 1986.

I don't expect the judges or the producers to know the year of every single song, but I do expect David and his camp to at least use the honor system. There's no way David (or his dad) would have known exactly what year the song was released; they would have had to check and discover that it was released in 1986.

At least Simon is beginning to criticize David's performance. For a while there it seemed like he could do no wrong (especially when he forgot the lyrics and there was no comment made.)

I was looking on wikipedia. It says the song and the australian release of the album were in 1986. Maybe it was released in the U.S. in 1990? :confused3 I have no idea. Very strange. (EDIT - I guess it was released by someone else in 1990...as stated in posts above.)

Oh...and I've been listening to DC on repeat today. Haha.

And big shocker here, the group number will be Dolly Parton songs.

This could end up being a very good weak, I'm excited to hear Jason do country. It's not like all Dolly songs have to be sung by girls, she has some that either male or female can sing.

I'm looking forward to this week, too. I hate country and don't know many Dolly Parton songs, but I love Dolly! She's too cute :lmao: and you can tell she really knows what she's doing. She just always seems like a genuinely good person! I'm interested in seeing what she has to say, and I can't wait to see what everyone does with their song choices. They're always telling the girls to stop singing "I Will Always Love You" because of Whitney, but I'd love to see David Cook put his spin on it and do smething completely crazy and unexpected and blow everyone away! :rotfl: That would be awesome!

Per his family Jason does sing some Keith Urban songs very well but since it's not country week but Dolly Parton week that won't help, LOL!!!

Oh, I've downloaded Jason's studio songs from itunes - FABULOUS, especially "FRAGILE" which I didn't know before Jason sang it this week.

I think someone said they have to sing songs written by Dolly or Kenny.

I downloaded a few of DC's songs. The studio version of Billie Jean is awesome! I wish they'd do a studio recording of Hello.

Me too! I just can't justify spending 99 cents on the very short stage performance. And I don't like the spyware sites like Limewire put on my computer. I downloaded all of DC's studio performances and MJ's latest.

A good "weak" -- I think you are on to something there! :lmao:

Dolly has a distinctive voice (which I do not, honestly, find all that pleasant.) I just can't hear Jason singing "9 to 5" --KWIM? But I know she is a well-respected songwriter so there are probably songs she's written that were never hits for her that might be better suited for the guys. But if they have Kenny's stuff to choose from too, then that's fine.

In a previous post I mentioned one of Dolly's songs and had the wrong title. Just wanted to mention that.

I have to say I am really disappointed by the 'mentors' list this year.

I hate country :scared: , Mariah Carey :scared: :scared: :scared: AND broadway/show tunes :scared: . The only one that doesn't make me want to toss my cookies is Neil Diamond! As much as I love DC - I think we have a few painful weeks coming up!

I really like Dolly too! She is always so sweet and she just makes me smile!
My favorite version of "walking in a winter wonderland" is the one she did.

I could not really NAME any songs she wrote (or sang... Unless she did 9 to 5, which I THINK is her, but I don't actually know.)

I had a very strange musical upbringing.
My parents listened to Reggae (UGH!) but had a bunch of beatles/rolling stones/ozark mountain dare devils/Donovan Albums from when THEY were younger.
Other than that I didn't listen to anything until I bought my first TAPE (madonna: Papa Don't Preach!) and even then I didn't BUY much music, so I only heard top 40 stuff at school dances and when the weather was right for the "cool" radio station to come in at my house :confused3 (living in rural VT there was not much chance to shop!) By High School I was into show tunes. (partly because I loved theater, partly to drive my parents nuts)

Eek I meant to say week. I'm not looking forward to broadway/show tunes. Neil Diamond not sure about him either. I don't know what the theme will be when Mariah Carey is on.

I think with Dolly it's songs she sang, wrote, or covered, I'm not 100% sure but I'll keep checking.

Someone on IDF posted her catalog and I'm trying to find it.

I might have to tune out for Mariah Carey week. I just can't stand her. Of course, I'd hate to miss DC for a week so I'm torn LOL

I can't believe it's only Thursday; Tuesday seems so far away. Glad I have a couple of DC's performances on my DVR to keep me going

Here's a link to Dolly's website and her song archives. http://www.dollyon-line.com/archives/lyrics/index.shtml
That's a lot of songs, add to that Kenny Rogers and they have a wide variety to find something that matches their style. Hopefully.

I'm actually looking forward to the broadway songs. Simon won't be able to use the "it sounds like a broadway tune" as an insult.

I despise that song, but the only way I'll give it a pass if it David Cook tries to sing it.

Personally, I'd like to see Brooke tackle 9 to 5...I want her to succeed at a peppy song! (Sorry, I'm sure Dolly has many uptempo songs, but I'm not familiar with her stuff at all)
