Official all things Princess Half Weekend 2015 thread! DOoneY and offical mErcH on DisneyParksBLOg

Hi! I'm a new runner hoping to do the PHM next February with my mom! It's going to be such a challenge but I'm really excited for it. I was wondering if there are any resorts that are more convenient to stay at than others for the PHM?

Veteran Princess here: I've stayed at Bay Lake Tower, and All-Star Music, and both were convenient. Bay Lake Tower I took the Monorail to EPCOT, which took maybe 15-20 minutes from our room to the staging area. When I stayed at All-Star Music, it was a 15 minute bus-ride, followed by a 10-minute walk from the bus to the staging area. I stayed there for the Wine & Dine HM, as well, and it was also convenient for that race, too.

It's a shame they changed the rules about no walk-ups to the corrals, because the first year I ran the PHM, we stayed at OKW and walked to the corrals from our room, which took maybe 10 minutes, if that. Plus, we got to sleep in later, which was nice. Oh well...

Subbing! Did the 10K in February, and I'm hooked :). Will definitely do something in 2015 - may repeat the 10K, but hoping to do the half. Need to figure out over the next 6 weeks whether or not I can handle a half...

Sitting in my home office listening to some videos on youtube of the 5k and
10k of 2014.

Just walked my very first 5.5k yesterday after 4 weeks of training :cool1:
I was so proud of myself!!!

Now, I'm thinking next february should I do 5k & 10K?? :scared1::confused3
Scared is what I am right now!!!
I see all those nice videos and I know I cannot really run, not like must of you do anyway :sad2: And I ask myself if 10k is not too much when you are NOT a runner....:confused3:confused3

And then I ask my self what kind of event I want to live, fast or stop and take pictures with Mickey, Minnie and everyone else...
But how can I stop everywhere if I'm not running....

Oh boy do I have questions on this Easter saturday!!!!!:thumbsup2

I just wanted to chime in and say I ran my first 10K at the 2014 Princess weekend and it was a blast! I only started running last March, so I was very nervous about finishing as well. Now I think 10K is a great distance - there is so much to see and experience and I had so much fun, and I was all on my own! I did run most of the race (cramped up a bit near the end, so had to walk for a while) but there were SO MANY walkers. I don't think it would be a problem at all to walk the entire thing. I didn't stop for any character pictures, but I regret that now and will definitely stop this year. Have faith - you can do it!!! :thumbsup2

Thanks Jdd!

This event just took a different meaning for me because my mom just past away suddendly from a heart attack 2 weeks ago :sad1:
She would have been so proud of me getting to do the 5 & 10K so for her I will try my very best to do both races.

Thanks Jdd!

I'm so sorry for your loss. :sad1:

I feel that celebrating your life (her gift to you) with a healthy pursuit and accomplishment will beautifully honor your Mom.

Good morning, everyone!

I'm counting the days until registration and hope to sign up for the 2015 GSC. I ran the Princess Half in 2011 but "need" 3 new Princess Weekend medals!! :goodvibes

I think I read that all Disney hotels are host hotels. Is this usually the case? I've always wanted to stay at CSR, so this may be my chance! For the W&D Half in November, choices were somewhat limited and I didn't want to depend on a taxi to be at the start line on time :p.

Thanks everyone - happy training!! pixiedust:

I have a question for all the interval runners. Are there any "rules" about how to run intervals? I'm finding that I can run 3-4 miles straight, and then if I take a walk break for about 1/4 to 1/2 mile, I can get my "second wind" and start running again. I'm just not sure if that's a good way to go about it. Would I be better off running a mile, walking a mile, and so on? I'm thinking mostly in terms of heart rate changes and/or possible injuries. I haven't researched this much, so thought I'd ask the expert Dis'ers :goodvibes

I run my intervals based on time - 5 minutes run, 1 minute walk. I find it works great for me- especially if I hit the water stops during the walk break.

As a very new runner who has just started intervals I run 30sec: walk 30sec. I have been playing around with the times trying to run more but the 30:30 is best for me for long running. You need to do what feels right for you. Check out Jeff Galloway's site for some different run/walk intervals and what the time should be.

I'm using the LOLO Easy 10K App with Jeff Galloway for iphone. I really like it, you can choose your run/walk interval times. He also does a 5k and half marathon app.

Thanks for all the responses! Looks like there's some flexibility with what I can do - going to check out the Jeff Galloway website now. For a while, I really had it in my head that I needed to run the whole thing, but I feel so much better after a walk break that I want to try this out! :thumbsup2

I saw a LOT of Galloway runners at this year's Princess HM - they seemed to be doing great!

My only complaint with Galloway/interval runners at races is when the timer goes off and it's time for them to walk, they stop right then & there, and I nearly run smack dab into their backs! So please, if you choose to do intervals on race day, be mindful of the other runners on the course and make your way to the side before walking. :) I wish there was an audio cue in the app for that!

Oh, absolutely!! I actually had to stop and walk at the 10K this past year (suddenly got nasty cramps in both calves) and I looked around and moved to the far right or left (as they advised us to do prior to the race start) before stopping. Most everyone I saw at the 10K was very considerate - there were just a few times I had to run far around walkers (into the grass).

Yep! PHM has gotten so big, all resorts have been hosts the past couple years. :thumbsup2

Depends who you ask! Jeff Galloway advises picking a set interval pattern and using it from the first step of your race, the idea being that you don't tire early and have plenty of gas left in the tank at the end. Personally, I'm a proponent of using whatever method you've proven works for you! I know folks who religiously stick to their 1:00/1:00 intervals, folks who run a mile, then walk a minute, folks who run until they feel tired, then walk a while... and they all finish. If you want to try some other methods, this is a good time to test them out. But if what you've been doing works well for you, no reason to mess with it!

Not all of us do this! ;)

I'm using that App too and really like it! :thumbsup2
