Official all things Princess Half Weekend 2015 thread! DOoneY and offical mErcH on DisneyParksBLOg

Short answer YES.

The problem is inflammation. And walking/running aggravates this. I would suggest…this is what my doctor/PT had me do…start taking aleve twice a day and ice at least 3 times a day. He had a great way to ice…take paper cups, fill with water, and freeze. Take that frozen cup out of the freezer and tear away a bit off sides (as it melts) and rub over outer side of knee and above and below. Do stop the Aleve a day or so out from race. I do trust my doctor he is also a team doctor for the Charlotte Bobcats..I feel that gives him some creditability. After the race, find a good PT to help with strength exercises and mechanics. I had to stop running for 3 months after my first half in 2009, but haven't had a problem since and have even done a couple of full marathons.

Also…he said not to run 2 days in a row, so I run 3 times a week every other day. I cheated that a bit last year when training for the GSC. Also he said stay under 20miles a week which I cheated a bit..when I was training for the full marathons and near the end of half training.

Awesome. Thanks. I'll send her the info. She is (or was) only doing 3 days a week with the Jeff Galloway method so I don't think its about overuse as much as it is the lack of strength training and proper mechanics. She'll definitely have to find a good PT to help her if she keeps running for sure. She'll be glad to hear she can not only get rid of the pain but can enjoy running again.

I'm going to guess the race shirts will ha steal involved. At least one of them will! Maybe pink or purple this year.

I hope you're right Patty! A teal and a purple would make me very happy. I thought last years colors were kind of bland. Of the white (10k), grey(13.1) and blue (GSC) the blue was my favorite color. 10k design was favorite though.

Hopefully we will get a peek soon!

I have to say I am getting really discouraged. I am only doing the 10k and it seems as if this is a "no big deal thing" especially to disney. I am in awe of everyone who is running the PHM and GSC, but 5 months ago I couldn't run a mile and I have now run 6.5. I wish people would see that for some this is just as much an accomplishment for some as the PHM and GSC is for others. I have never been able to run going all the way back to running the mile in middle school gym class. I want to be proud of how far I have come, but it seems as if the only thing that matters is the PHM and GSC. I have battled through broken toes, ITB issues, and getting out to run in 25 degree weather just as others have...

I think once you've run the 10K, you'll see how great of a race accomplishment it really is! The environment, the volunteers cheering you on, and crossing that finish line is just such a great HIGH moment in a runner's life, that you'll forget the "no big deal" feeling. You have come so, so far as a runner; don't beat yourself up because you're not at half marathon running, yet. While running is for all intents and purposes a "speed" sport, it's all baby steps. When I first started running back in 2009, it took me the better part of a year to be able to even run my first 5K, so you are far, far ahead of me in that aspect. Give yourself a pat on the back, you're a winner in my book. :)

I think the feeling you're getting is from the fact that when this first started, it was just the half marathon, and no other races (if I remember correctly), so the focus was always on the half marathon, and that's it. I think that had they started with the 5K and then added 10K and then the half, then that mentality would be a little different. Keep in mind, this is only the second year that the 10K has been an option on PHM Weekend. Keep your chin up, you got this, girl!

And one last bit of advice I was given from a very good friend of mine who helped me get through my first half marathon (the 2012 PHM): run your own race - everyone else is running theirs. And focus on the mile you're in. You'll do great!

I can definitely get down with a teal shirt, that's my favorite color! I won't get my hopes up, though. Disney always finds ways of surprising me.

I am new to this thread, but have recently decided to start running and am going to sign up for a 2016 race -- probably the enchanted 10k. And even though this is already going to be ambitious for me (the other times I have tried to start running I've given up due to back and foot problems, but I'm going to --safely!-- make it work this time and not get discouraged) I got caught up in reading about all the races and the excitement of trying the GSC or even "just" the PHM. But I'm going to work up to that slowly and steadily and not to worry if I decide against them. The 10k is definitely a huge accomplishment!

I am trying to focus on my own accomplishments -- like you, I was never a runner. And whether or not there are the same amount of shirts and sparkle and general excitement around the 10k, it's a huge thing for me to do. I just need to keep reminding myself that. I guess we both do! :)

My spouse wants to do the 5k together, and then he will cheer me on in the 10k. I might never work up to a half marathon, or maybe I will, but that doesn't mean I won't have worked super hard to do the 10k!

I hope you feel proud of how far you've come -- good luck next week! I think it's a big deal!

I was told they will have an "I DID IT" 10K shirt. They just didn't release the artwork for it. You might be surprised with what they have at the expo. You are achieving a huge goal you set for yourself. Keep up the great work.

Please don't think that a lack of merchandise means anything about your accomplishments! As others have said so well before me, Disney's goal is making money and apparently the 10K merchandise didn't sell as well as the other stuff. That has nothing at all to do with your race experience, though! I think you'll find that we runners are an incredibly supportive, encouraging group, and trust us vets when we say that the energy at WDW is amazing. Soak it all in, enjoy the experience, and never stop being very proud of your accomplishments :)

Has anyone checked accuweather lately? As of today they're thinking it'll be HOT that weekend, high of 82 degrees on Saturday and 79 on Sunday! I hope it'll be a bit cooler than that, although at 5:30am it'll more likely be at the low temperature of 58.
Central Floridian here: yes, the low temp of the day is what we'll be looking at for the race starts. But it's still too early to trust any weather forecast; it's been changing every day. Hang tight!

I wonder if people who do the 1/2 during Marathon weekend in January feel the same way as you?
I've run the Jan. half the past two yeas and never felt like my race wasn't worthy of recognition! The full marathon is the marquee event, but every race is a celebration at Disney.

I thought last years colors were kind of bland. Of the white (10k), grey(13.1) and blue (GSC) the blue was my favorite color. 10k design was favorite though.
Totally agree - here's hoping for more color this time!

The 10K matters. It ALL matters! to go from 1 mile to 6 in 5 months is a HUGE accomplishment and a very big deal. Running is a weird endeavor and for once it's not just women who put themselves down all the time. Whether it's starting a conversation with an "I'm slow" comment or a "I only do the treadmill" comment or who knows what, almost every runner I know at some point, puts themselves down. A 10K is not an insignificant distance

At the end of the day you are in competition with yourself and you have come tremendously far. There will always be folks faster, and slower. There will always be ones that can run farther, and ones who cannot. There will be folks who can't run at all. Celebrate where YOU are and where you want to be. That is easier said than done I realize. And if it makes you feel a tiny bit better, as a half "only" runner, there is a lot more GSC stuff than half...or it's cooler... in my opinion lol.

And just wait, the 10K or 5K shirt is often the coolest of the bunch!

You rock and should be proud of yourself, that is a LOT in 5 months!

The blog post IS NOT all of the merchandise - it is a preview of the merchandise. :) My friend did GSC last year and I remember going to the expo with her and she bought a 10K shirt. So keep your eyes peeled next weekend!

You are all so great, thank you so much for helping me to see that I am actually about to accomplish my goal!! It's not fair to myself to move that goal right before the finish line!!!

Yes, the Disney parks blog confirmed there are at least some pins and an I did it! 10k shirt that will be available! For those interested they also have some info on pricing in the comments, the poster was doing great responding to everyone.

That guy is an awesome poster - he seems like he's one of the only ones that actually reads the comments and cares enough to get answers for people. I'm a fan.

10K Does Matter! On July 2013, my friend had a great idea and invited me to run the Tinkerbell 10K with her. My first question was "How far is a 10K?"... You should have seen my reaction. So being determind, I started out training with my iPhone app. I was so discouraged as I only made it from the parking lot to accriss the street. Six months later, I finished my first 10K with my friend who never left my side. It was a HUGE accomplishment! So yes, it does matter and I am proud of you!

Yes it is an accomplishment! Honestly, so is a 5K for that matter!

I would strongly recommend making sure you bring music with you to the race. Even if you don't run to music just put the headphones in/on in your corral and don't listen to the announcers. Although they are getting *better*, the announcers are still pretty bad about using the words "just" and "only" when describing ONE race vs a challenge.

Don't let it mess with you. YOU know what you've done, YOU know what you're working towards. It's amazing. You know it.

And don't let the lack of stuff to buy bum you out about the race itself. If you want to be angry with rundisney's merchandise people, go for it. I am. They got rid of my fave item to buy, and I can't forgive them for it. (mini medal for the Vinylmation Mickeys, and they still sell the rundisney vinylmation so it makes no sense to not have a medal for it) They had nothing for the 5k this January except for "i did it" shirts which I REFUSE to buy or wear. My son wanted something more "manly" than the childish (he felt) 5K shirt or Mickey Mile shirt, and he found nothing. And they had absolutely nothing in DH's size, which was *beyond* frustrating, depressing, a touch humiliating, and awful. But that's merchandise, not the run or the other runners. (or walkers)

Just focus on your run. Ignore the other stuff.

I wonder if people who do the 1/2 during Marathon weekend in January feel the same way as you?

This year and last year, yep. "Who is ONLY doing the Half?" at the corral starts over and over and over. You can hear "only" and "just" a finite number of times before you start to lose it, just a bit. Maybe that's why I enjoyed the Wine&Dine (despite the torrents of rain) and the TOT I did better, because there was no challenge for them to go on and on about?

I preordered the 10K pin on the runDisney website. I wanted to make sure I got something specific to the race that I am doing. I thought it would be good to add to a shadow box with my medal and bib. :-)

ETA: It looks like the preorder pin is sold out on the website. I read that there will be a mini medal pin sold just at the expo though.

Running is almost exclusively an individual sport. Your motivation comes from inside of you. Most of your training is done alone, and only other runners can appreciate your journey. That is why runners are so supportive of one another. We get it, and we learn that it is okay that others do not. But don't look for offense where no offense is intended, and Disney clearly does not mean to offend here. They are trying to get you excited about YOUR race. So, even if their words are not what you would have chosen, take them for what they are meant. Only you can give words power over you. Give them power - but make it positive.

Rejoice in your efforts and accomplishments. Run for the joy of it.
