Official all things Princess Half Weekend 2015 thread! DOoneY and offical mErcH on DisneyParksBLOg

I had this happen to me last year before the race and it was my first half. I can only tell you what I did and what the best advice I found was: NO RUNNING until the race! NONE. She'll be tempted, but there's nothing that will help running wise for her to run at this point and running will just aggravate it. I taped my knees, used a brace, and it was painful but I got it done! I kept waiting a few days and trying to run and I think if I had just stopped running completely for the last 3 weeks I might have been in less pain. She's done the training and now has to try and let the knees heal and trust that training!

Thanks for your sharing your experience. I will let her know. I advised no running at all as well so I think she is planning to just chill until the race. Of course, I'm wondering if it will be aggravating by walking around parks for the 3 days leading up to the race..... She really wants to be able to run the intervals and not walk the whole time so I hope she can at least do a little. We'll see.

Maybe I missed it, but have we seen the shirts yet?? I remember pictures being posted last year well before race day...

Short answer YES.

The problem is inflammation. And walking/running aggravates this. I would suggest…this is what my doctor/PT had me do…start taking aleve twice a day and ice at least 3 times a day. He had a great way to ice…take paper cups, fill with water, and freeze. Take that frozen cup out of the freezer and tear away a bit off sides (as it melts) and rub over outer side of knee and above and below. Do stop the Aleve a day or so out from race. I do trust my doctor he is also a team doctor for the Charlotte Bobcats..I feel that gives him some creditability. After the race, find a good PT to help with strength exercises and mechanics. I had to stop running for 3 months after my first half in 2009, but haven't had a problem since and have even done a couple of full marathons.

Also…he said not to run 2 days in a row, so I run 3 times a week every other day. I cheated that a bit last year when training for the GSC. Also he said stay under 20miles a week which I cheated a bit..when I was training for the full marathons and near the end of half training.

Am I the only one annoyed by that article posted on the Dis about new dooney pattern releases? The writer starts complaining about the patterns being marathon related when everyone is excited and looking for new lines.

Now, I don't even plan on buying one. But, these are a limited release made for those running the race, not everyone going to the parks (who already have a ton of patterns). If they wanted them to be a wide release readily available to whoever wants them, they wouldn't only sell them at the expo!

Ok rant over. lol. I just feel bad because a lot of runners want them and are probably going to miss out because they sell out so quickly. And I guess they also have to compete with those not even involved in the race weekend now since Mickey isn't wearing sneakers in this design :rolleyes2

Somebody on Fb posted a link to ordering the Dooney bags:
I'm not sure how well this will work for some of you, but I found this link earlier: http://www.yourwdwstore.net/Dooney-Bourke_c_604.html

Wouldn't you know? There are Princess bags "for sale" on this site. It might be worth trying if you want one but not getting to town until later. I'd much rather see participants taking advantage of this than people who just want the bag.

Cheaper then what they are going for on eBay... So sad disney isn't supporting the runners by allowing us first access. I called runDisney and complained.

I haven't seen anything and was wondering the same thing this morning.

I'm curious, as well. Let's see, last year's was blue (well, silver-blue), 2013 was purple, 2012 was white with purple/gold lettering, 2011 was white with green & purple lettering. Can't remember what the race shirts looked like before 2011, but someone who does can feel free to chime in if they remember.

I just hope they're not pink. Or orange. Or that gross maroon from the ribbon on the HM medal.

DVCFan!

I posted the pics of the PHM shirts above! I am still pretty new to Disboard functions. So I had to post pic in separate post! Ha ha! There is similar picture of merchandise for GSC too!

Luv2Run! I just posted pics above your post! Is the picture viewable? I can't tell if I did it right...

Oh hello from Cleveland. Also still snowing here. Leaving Saturday. Will form a protest line at the airport if my flight gets cancelled.

On a really random note - I want to take some Epsom salts since I will be walking all week leading up to the races. But that is a heavy little bag. I'm a little worried TSA will have some questions if I put it into little one cup measured sandwich baggies! These are the things I've begun thinking of as I go stir crazy. :tilt:

Be proactive with your flight. Keep an eye on airport and airline sites. If they say anything about your flight date or city, see about leaving earlier if possible. Don't rely on them to tell you about delays, keep an eye on it all.

I always have a car so I hit publix and get a $2 bag of plain Epsom. (The spendy lavender stuff is in a separate aisle from the cheap plain stuff) If no car just carry it on. Sure it's heavy so put it in a rolly carryon or deal with it in the purse if you don't want to deal with lifting it into the bin. Once the flight is done put it in the roller bag if you have one.

Really, really hoping for no rain on raceday. Running in soggy shoes just does NOT sound fun at all.

Having done the last wine and dine, I'll tell you there's nothing fun about wet shoes at all. And you think you can't get wetter and then you don't hear what the cm is calling out until just as you splash down in the HUGE puddle she was warning us of. (Better idea for the cm to be before the puddle, Disney, by the way). My feet got soooo much wetter. I hope you don't have rain.

Thank you, but that's the race merch. We're talking about the official race tshirts that are issued with your gEAR bag at packet pick-up/Expo.

Oooh I didn't even think of those!! Wow, mega noob here! So excited for first PHM! Think I wont hunt for those shirts though, I think I would like to be surprised!! :D

I have to say I am getting really discouraged. I am only doing the 10k and it seems as if this is a "no big deal thing" especially to disney. I am in awe of everyone who is running the PHM and GSC, but 5 months ago I couldn't run a mile and I have now run 6.5. I wish people would see that for some this is just as much an accomplishment for some as the PHM and GSC is for others. I have never been able to run going all the way back to running the mile in middle school gym class. I want to be proud of how far I have come, but it seems as if the only thing that matters is the PHM and GSC. I have battled through broken toes, ITB issues, and getting out to run in 25 degree weather just as others have...

First, I don't know you or your whole back story.
What I do know is that you decided, and put into action a plan to run 6.2 miles…That is something to be proud of and I hope you keep it up. Disney/runDisney is a big corporation and is in the business of making money. There may well be people within the company that see this a a good way to get people off the couch, but in the big picture it is a company to make money, not care about individuals. What sells, will be what they market. This race used to be in March…a good two week past Pres. Day vacation week…I liked the race better then as the crowds in parks were less and the Flower and Garden Event at Epcot was open.
Keep the focus on who you are and what you have accomplished…when you cross that finish line there will be so many people ( I mean real people) cheering and I am sure you will get a good/great feeling (okay there may be many different feeling) inside that will last much longer than any tshirt or other piece of material thing.
Good luck on your race!

Has anyone checked accuweather lately? As of today they're thinking it'll be HOT that weekend, high of 82 degrees on Saturday and 79 on Sunday! I hope it'll be a bit cooler than that, although at 5:30am it'll more likely be at the low temperature of 58.

It was a big deal for me last year when I ran a 10k too, and I don't think anyone thought it wasn't good enough. All of my friends and family were really supportive and shocked (in a good way!). And it was one of my most liked facebook posts ever, haha. Then my sister suggested we do the half, so that's what we're doing this time. But in no way do I think a 10k isn't a huge accomplishment, and I think plenty of others out there agree with me! I wonder if people who do the 1/2 during Marathon weekend in January feel the same way as you? Hmm. Anyway, I think once you're on the race course you'll feel really good about your decision and there will be just as much praise for 10Kers as there are for 1/2ers!

Sometimes I feel the same way (because I'm "only" doing the 5K) ... being a shorter race doesn't make it less of an accomplishment. You're doing something amazing, something many people (including me right now) couldn't do and you're working hard. Yes, Disney does seem to focus a little more on the longer races sometimes ... but that's because it's the "main event" of the weekend.
I think the vast majority of the runners out there understand that the 10K is a huge accomplishment for some people. It's the people who aren't runners who don't get it ... they think it's something anyone could do (but that's because they haven't tried it). When you cross that finish line, you still get a medal, and you get to be just as proud as yourself as the people who did the half and glass slipper. In 5 months you've gone from zero to hero - and don't ever forget that!!

I am exactly where you are. I started running in June and I had never run before. I am doing the 10K too. It is a huge accomplishment! Just keep focusing on that awesome medal that you will be wearing around on Saturday afternoon. :-)
