Off Topic: Smoking around kids.....

TN is now smoke-free in all restaurants as of last month. But get this, if they make the establishment 21 and up only, then they can smoke. We tried going to a restaurant last week for the first time in 2 years. We always liked their food, but could never go b/c it was soooo smoky and we didn't want to take DD. We get there (to a restaurant mind you!), and it had a sign that you now have to be 21 to enter at all times. Needless to say, we won't be back there ever again as a matter of principal. They did it just to keep their smokers at the bar part happy.

My guess is the owners smoke too and didn't want to losse their right to smoke where they wanted.

I can't wait MI is all smoke free. Right now many restaurants have went that way on their own.

MIL used to be a smoker. When DD was a few months old I took her to MIL's office so she could show her first grandchild to her co-workers. Her and some of the co-workers took us to lunch. MIL lights up and about half the table does. With a couple month old sitting in the midst of it all. I did not know what to do. I did not want to be rude and get up and leave lunch with DD since they were treating me. But I did not want to keep DD in all that smoke. I figured a short time that one time would be ok. Probably not the best thing to do keep her in the smoke but she's never around it otherwise. Thankfully MIL quit a few years ago and not more issues like this.

And DH grew up in the house with the smoking. When we met in college he told me he had chronic bronchitus. Always sick with it. Well, he's never sick with that anymore. Think it was living in that house.

I can not wait for MI to pass one. It is only a mater of time, so many other states are. Many restaurants who were smoking have gone none smoking and I love that.

OP I could not agree more.

I hated it when I worked in day care (preschool teacher) and so many kids came in smelling like smoke.

I have 2 sister in laws who have terrible asthma problems. Both had mothers who where heavy smokers growing up. It is so sad.

I am so grateful for Ohio smoking laws. My 2 children with asthma appreciate it as well:thumbsup2 . Last weekend in MI, we went to a bowling alley and within 15 minutes both my children were wheezing. No one was smoking at the time, but the entire carpeting etc. smelled like smoke. I forgot about the lack of smoking laws in MI and now my kids are sick. I am hoping DD can attend school tomorrow since she has missed 2 days so far. And that was just 15 minutes in the building.

My worst experience though was when DD was hospitalized for wheezing. The respiratory therapist who was giving her hourly breathing treatments came in smelling strongly of cigarettes:scared1: . Ok, she came in to treat my child's asthma, but made it worse by her odor. I reported her to the head RN and told them to give me the meds and I would give them to her. The RN brought in the treatments rest of that night. You'd think this person knows what happens to lungs when you smoke:confused3

Yep, I refuse to go in bowling alleys, even during the day. Sad isn't it.

That would really make me mad about the respiratory therapist. I can't believe anyone would be able to keep their job in that field and still smoke like that. That seems the same as an addition counselor who is a current drug user. :confused3

I really hope MI passes a non smoking law similar to Ohio. We lived in Lucas county (Toledo area) when they passed their county wide law and many businesses complained that people would go to neighboring counties to eat. Well, as it turned out they were just as busy and now Ohio is all non-smoking.

I've worked in healthcare my entire career and I'm amazed at the number of RTs who smoke. But then again I'm amazed at the number of physical therapists that are overweight as well. People don't always practice what they preach:confused:

I'm so happy that NJ banned smoking in restaurants.

We used to go to this bar/restaurant upon occasion but it was always smokey. It was one of the places DH's family liked to meet for dinner. The food was good, but the smoke was ick and they had a system that was supposed to take care of smoke.

Now it is a pleasure to go to.

California is smoke free in public places such as restaurants, school zones, shopping malls. When we went to Montana a couple of years back we really noticed what a difference it made. It was awful going into restrooms that reeked of cigarettes and over loaded ash trays. What about Florida and WDW is it a smoke free zone?

Delaware is smoke free in all bars, restaurants, public places...including casinos. They all complained that business would suffer, blah blah blah. Never happened! It's the greatest thing! It's weird going to another state and being asked "Smoking or non?"

I believe CA passed a law or is currently passing a law that bans all smoking from public housing (like apartment complexes/condos/townhouses). CA residents can correct me if I'm wrong. I also think they are thinking of passing a law to fine a person for smoking in a car with a child under 12.

I agree with both laws.

There has been talk of it but this is one that I doubt will get passed.
We are smoke free in public places however. :thumbsup2
