off topic ...had to put my dog to sleep....:( Our Zak- pic added - thank you all....

:grouphug: Your family is in our thoughts and prayers. I can only imagine how you and your family feel. We wish you all the best.

Sorry to hear about your loss. It's hard losing a pet when they're such a big part of your family.

I am so sorry for your loss. My thought and prayers are with you. My little Yorkie is my baby and I know exactly what you are going through. Time will slowly ease the pain but always keep your dog in your heart. Take care and remember the DisBoards are a great source for support through tough times like this!!

Thank you.... I was a difficult night last night. Even though we had told our 2 DDs the night before to say their goodbyes when they came home we had to tell them.... they understand it was the best thing(they are old enough for that) but still he had been here their entire life so its was hard. we will all be ok in time I know that. But for now its hard and I still remember when I had to sign the consent at the vet my heart sank and I thought oh my what I am doing.... I am sorry I feel like I am whining to all you (after all this hardly has to do with weddings etc. )as I sit here with tears in my eyes but thank you....for reading and your comforting words and prayers...

We had to do the same thing when my dog was 13 and I was away at the time and DH had to do it!! I felt a lot of guilt at the time and I missed my little furbaby a lot! I am thinking of y'all today :grouphug:

awwww...what a sweet old man!:(

I am so sorry to hear your really sad news. I know exactly how heartbreaking it is. I had to have my beloved 'Tramp' put to sleep when I was 19 (and on christmas eve no less). He was my best birthday present ever... a tiny bundle of fluff when he was 8 weeks old, and I was 4 years old. I thought my heart would break but i'm proud of myself because I knew I did the right thing. 4 years ago I again had to have my Springer Spaniel put to sleep after months and months of medical tests... they finally discovered he had liver cancer and I just couldn't have watched him suffer. Now we have 'Vox'... our 4 year old Lhasa Apso, and I absolutely dread anything happening to him... but if it ever does, I will make the same decision I made over my 2 other dogs in a heartbeat.

I know it probably doesn't feel like it right now...but I promise the hurting does get easier and you should feel really really proud that you made the right choice and let your beloved furry friend pass away in a dignified and humane manner

Thank you so much for your kind words and wisdom.... I know in my head it was the right thing to do for his quality of life and he didn't deserve anything less but my heart is sad. we have had other pets (actually had zak and his mate- she died several years back. Her name was Ashley)and still have two cats now but this is the first pet ever that have had put to sleep. Thank you again and I know everything everyone has said is true and I know it was the humane and responsible thing to do so he didn't suffer but.....:(

Awww honey, I'm so sorry. We had to make the same decision with our boy 2 weeks before we went to Disney in 2005 and it was so hard. He had a very rare form of cancer that manifested itself in the digits so we thought he had an infection in his toe. 5 weeks later he went. He had been my best friend and constant companion for 15 years, and the best listener I have ever come across.

There's nothing anyone can say to lessen the hurt and heartache but anyone who has been there knows exactly how you are feeling.

You are not whinging at all - we're all friends on here through the good and the bad. The good thing is that you have people from all over on these boards so if you get up early in the morning and can't sleep come on and post! The UK is roughly (and I mean roughly) 5 hours behind so you're bound to find someone to chat with even when it's 4am for you :goodvibes :goodvibes

Alex, Thank you...

Aww I'm so so sorry :(!!!!!!!!!! I hope your hanging in there!! I'll be thinking about you!

my dog had heart failure at the end. It was only two weeks or so from her diagnosis that we had to put her down. It was rought. One minute, she was so excited to go outside and would tell me. Then, we'd get out there, and she'd be walking around, and then just start to lean and fall out. One second spry, the next near death. It was a cylce that was very trying on my emotions, very deceiving, but I couldnt take it anymore. One of these times shes not getting up. The frothing, the panting, all of it. I couldnt take it. I even had to tell her to lay down in the van on the way to the vet to put her down. Now, whats the irony in that. Stop walking around the van, so you dont get hurt on the way to the vet to be put down. I miss that dog. She was 15 i think. Border collie mix, i got her when I was 12, and had her till I was 27. Boy did she see a lot. 2 years later I had my first daughter. So, there ya go..

That was our concern that it was going to become more difficult for him as time progressed because he was older and had lived much longer than most cocker spaniels(the avg age is 12 - 13yrs) and the longest recorded life span was just over 18 years. He turned 17 in jan of this year so he had a long and happy life with us... I know that. Thanks for your kindness....it truly is appreciated.

SO sorry for your loss.

My parents are here with their 10 1/2 year old cocker spaniel. She's deaf and has had hip problems this year. Dh and I don't think she will make another trip up to MA from NC in the car. She's been a great dog. My parents got her while I was on my honeymoon. When we got back I called and said what's new and they said, your new sister. She is the sweetest cocker spaniel I've ever met. She wouldn't harm a fly and she loves our 2 DDs.

It's never easy but it is for the best. She will always be in your heart!

I had tears in my eyes reading your post.

Oh bless your hearts. what a loss. I cannot imagine when the day comes where Duncan will no longer be with us. These furbabies......I'll tell you....all they want is a nice supper, a belly rub and for you to let them love you to pieces.

Tracey thank you... We had never had crocker spaniels before but we got the female -Ashley first and she was great then we got Zak about 1 year later. Ashley was more temper mental but Zak was always so laid back and great with our girls when they were younger. we couldn't have asked for better family dogs! Thanks...

Karen thankyou for your thoughts and words. we tried to prepare ourselves and our DD just because we knew the time would come but it happened very quickly and like the vet said you can't ever really be prepared. The vet staff was wonderful with me and dh they stayed and talked with us listened to our stories and then we were allowed to stay until we were ready to leave . They wrapped Zak in a blanket for his trip home....Zak loved his belly rubbed....

 awww I am so sorry... I will keep you in my prayers... many hugs

oh i'm so sorry !! i swear those fur babies are real people too !! i had to put my fur baby to sleep a couple of years ago and i was 26 and had had her since i was 12. so i know how painful it can be :-( ... i know everyone's experiences are different but the sadness is still there ... i'm so sorry about your loss dear ...

i cried every day for awhile ... it's almost like a people loss, so take your time to heal ...and your baby looked precious in the picture ... he looks like you guys took the best care of him ... he was one lucky doggie !!

Reading your message brought back all the sadness from when I had to put my dog down last year due to an awful illness. You will always be sad at the thought of your pooch but you will remember the happy times too. Stay strong through this time but let yourself cry when you need it.

I hope you are feeling a little better everyday and know that he had a great life with you...
