Please no flames, no religious questions, no judgement...

I am looking for a child's bible for my DS who is three. I know I said no judgement, but I'll judge myself briefly. We are Roman Catholic and my son knows who Spiderman, Santa, Buzz Lightyear and of course Mickey Mouse, but has is lacking knowledge in our belief system. I figure this to because every night I read to him, but we don't have a children's bible.

Do you know of a good illustrated version for a child his age?

TIA,

Annie

My kids had the First Step Bible in preschool, then they get/got The Adventure Bible from our church in fourth grade.

I mention the Adventure Bible because there is an Adventure Bible for Early readers that seems to be targeted to preschoolers, but we don't have that one. It gets good reviews on Amazon, though.

I know you said you wanted to find a bible, and I've looked for one through the years for dd's, have bought a couple, but have never really been impressed with them.

But we have gotten dd's a bunch of religious-type books over the years (we allow them to take books to read at church as long as they're "church" books), and probably the following 2 are the ones they've really taken a liking to. And I'm pretty impressed with how they're worded, and how they explain the bible stories.

First, we were able to find at our library's book sale, an almost complete set of "Alice in Bibleland" story books.. these are really cute.. average 25-30 pages.. simply written.. nice pictures.
Each book is a main "story" of the bible, such as 'the good samaritan', 'loaves & fishes', 'daniel & the lions', 'the story of creation', etc.
Can find most of them on amazon or ebay...

The other one with I LOVE is "the Usborne Book of Bible Stories"... nice big, simple words, awesome pictures, very nicely told! Has 6 stories from the Old Testament and 7 stories from the New Testament.
Usborne also has 2 called "First Bible" and "Illustrated Children's Bible", but I have not seen those in person, so can't tell about those, lol.
Can find these either online, or our school does Usborne sales at times. http://www.myubam.com/ecommerce/results.asp?sid=NEW&gid=114141760

My children both have the Precious Moments Stories From the Bible. It is not the bible but a telling of the stories in a form that children can understand. They both enjoy listening to these stories and at their ages they may not understand them but they will one day.

I have a wonderful one at home but I forget the name! I will update this thread when I get home. We are Catholic as well and my DD goes to a Parochial school. She brought the Bible in Kingergarten and the teacher loved it. I think it may be the Bible Stories one the PP mentioned. I will get back to you tonight though.

Not a Bible, but we used this for devotionals:

The One Year Devotions for Preschoolers (Little Blessings Line)

Also, The Jesus Storybook Bible is a good one, maybe in a year or two

For reading stories - We had The Beginner's Bible: Timeless Children's Stories, and also had an illustrated bible, but don't remember the name. We used the story book more though.

This is one book I remember reading all the time as a kid. Includes many Bible stories without being long or heavy. Good start to reading scripture IMO. I also had a few different "kiddy" Bibles and most were illustrated. One was an Adventures in Odessy by FOTF.

I just wanted to say you are a great mommy for #1 reading to your DS and #2 looking for a bible. I suggest you take him to Mardel's or whatever store you have to look together and decide on one. He will feel a part of the process and be excited about his new bible.

I saw a children's bible in Target 2 days ago. I didn't pick it up & look thru it so I have no clue what was in it.

The Beginners Bible that was linked above is the one that we have most frequently used atvthe past several churches we worked with. The illustrations are some of the better ones.

I don know if I did that right but it's a veggie tales bible and my dd got it when she was three. It's a real bible but it has picture of the veggie tales in it and it's really good. Have you ever introduced the veggie tales to ur child? They are great!

We love Veggie Tales here too...sometimes though I think they confuse DD. She was telling me the story of Jonah (from Bible class) and she mentioned the pirates that don't do anything. Veggie Tales DEFINATELY takes poetic liberties. They are lots of fun though.

Agree you want a bible storybook vs an actual bible.

As mentioned, Beginners Bible is good. FYI, they also have 1/2 hour cartoons that I regularly use in my Sunday school classes. Perhaps your library might have them?

I also like A First Bible Story Book (DK Publishers, retold by mary Hoffman). Not a huge book but I like that the illustrations are less cartoony than BB. (Our Sunday school kids get the "next" DK book of Bible Stories, The Children's Illustrated Bible, when they are in 3rd grade.)

I think it's a great idea too to get some short little books of individual stories that are easy for him to look through on his own.

NEST Entertainment has a nice series of Bible videos out as well. Not as "cutesy" as Beginners Bible, but very well done. (The producer used to do Disney movies.) They're pricy to get, your library might carry them or lots pop up on ebay from time to time.

Veggietales are great even if they don't "get" the biblical connection in them when they are young. I use them in Sunday school classes. It may be several years later, but it will hit them- OH, Dave and the Giant Pickle is another way of telling about David and Goliath! They're also nice to promote general Christian topics that God loves us, etc. Be forewarned the Saturday morning VT are not the same, they've secularized them.

We like a book called the "Rhyme Bible" published by Gold'n Honey books. It's about 15 years old so not sure it is still in print but the pictures are great and each story is told in rhyme.

Check out you local bible book type store too. The people that work there are great at helping you. Also you local library may have quite a few different ones that you can try out with your child to see what he may like best.

We have this same one, my 6 yr old reads it to my 3 yr old and they both love it. My 6 yr old sleeps with it in his bed and reads it every night.

Thank you so much for all your assistance! I am going to start looking at them all now.

And thank you for your compliments. :) I think we all try our hardest to prepare our children and reading is my favorite way to bond with him on a daily basis!
