odd ME luggage question

my son's flight is arriving tonight at 9:30. He wants to know if they will automatically pick up his luggage if he does not check in at ME until later--he wants to go somewhere in the airport to see the end of the hockey game tonight? I know that is weird, but I did not know what to tell him.

Yes, they will pick up his luggage. Not a problem.

Not a problem at all. The only issue may be his arrival time. If his flight is delayed, and he arrives past 10pm, they won't get his tagged bags. DME is no longer picking up, and delivering, tagged checked bags after 10pm. Those bags will remain at the airport until the next morning..then (I assume) they will be found and delivered to the resorts.

I'm just not sure I would want to take that chance. That's cutting it pretty close.

If he actually arrives after 10, he could:

1. Go to the carousel, fetch his baggage, then go to the bar where they are showing the hockey game, then go to the DME welcoming area, or

2. Go see the hockey game first, then go to the carousel, etc.

In both cases he should not dilly dally at the airport too long after 10 PM. DME could shut down for the night after all flights known to have DME guests have arrived.

Even so, if DME shuts down, there will be a phone number left at the desk that he could call and he WILL be given transportation to the resort.

Even though all known flights with guest reservations may have arrived, there will probably always be guests that got delayed in a connecting city and come in on a different flight number than originally reserved on. DME has NO WAY to know that an individual guest was rerouted to a different flight. Very few, if any of those guests will have even the slightest thought to call DME and update their arriving flight number.

Only baggage handling closes down at midnight...that's when they stop accepting the tagged bags for the night. But...if you have a reservation on DME to get to your resort that night, you will get a ride no matter what time.
But...it could take a bit longer to do that, simply because there aren't as many buses or vans running due to fewer people coming in.

Well because of SW flight delays he missed the entire game--he was not happy, but at least the Pens won!

Since it was late he got his own luggage but had to wait nearly an hour for the bus to AKL to fill and then they are the last stop--why are the deluxe resorts the last stop??
