October guests left out in the cold

I've read so many conflicting reports about Thanksgiving and the week of Columbus Day. It's hard to comprehend what it's really like unless you're there I guess.

Thanksgiving, everyone in American with kids has that weekend off.

Columbus Day, not everyone with kids has that time off. Fall break changes and very few school systems get that weekend off on it's own. It's not as solid as thanksgiving.

Works out well if the OP is Canadian since their Thanksgiving is our Columbus Day. :)

WDW is getting more and more popular and I think the anly way to ease the pain would be for them to develop another park to help disperse the crowds.

For a long time i've thought that Disney needs to expand all the parks at WDW and offer more rides and attractions to spread our the crowds.

Even during the busiest times, it all depends on which park you go to. We went during Christmas at the end of 2014, and because we only spent one day at MK, never had any crowd problems. This year we're going the week after Columbus day but are giving MK a miss completely.

Reading the reports on TPAS made it seem like every person in the world was at MK on Columbus Day.

It's our first visit in ctober, arriving 10/5 for 9 nights. It's our equivalent of Spring Break in New Zealand, Mrs McN is a teacher and our two girls are both school age, meaning we can only take vacation during school holidays. We've been to Disneyland a few times at the same time of year - first was 2013 (then '14 & "15) and it got noticeably busier every year. This is the first time a visit will coincide with Columbus Dy so not sure what impact that will have... forwarned is forearmed though so going in with the mindset that it will be packed...

I had hoped for a room discount but haven't budgeted for it (i.e. it isn't a deal breaker if it doesn't come through) but had hoped discounts for our time would be released earlier this week. We are ar POR 10/5 but nothing available there. I'm hoping Disney are waiting to see what cancellations are like post releasing FD (for those who did multiple booking in the hope they would score somewhere), and that more discounts will open up in the next couple of months. Mousesavers showed discounts up until mid November were released at the same time as FD last year. We're moving to BC 10/9 so would be nice to have a bit of a discount there:goodvibes

Like others have said, they offer discounts to fill empty rooms. They don't do it to be nice to guests. If rooms are selling well there is no reason to offer a discount.

I agree. I also think that it never helps when folks who think they are "planning ahead" book rooms so they can "apply" discounts. The rooms are not available so there is a reduced inventory. I am sure that Disney has numbers crunchers locked in a room who can look at the census and then calculate how many of those rooms will actually be dropped and how many rooms will be left once the discounts or lack thereof are announced.
