October 12, 2013 - Western Caribbean on the Fantasy!!!

Just discovered Scott's blog page... I was reading through comments about the 25% future sailing if your cruise was affected by the hurricane - goodness people are RUDE! Sounds like a truly terrifying experience and there are people basically saying "it's your fault for booking in hurricane season". I'm from Florida - most of the time is hurricane season! Anyway, here's hoping this storm is over and there are no more injuries or deaths. Also hoping for good weather next October! ;)

I read it too, and I'm really getting sick of all those people bashing those who cruise in hurricane season.....I've taken 3 cruises...Aug, Sept, Oct, and scheduled next Oct. (this cruise) In the end, you must do what is best for you. I really hope we don't get that weather they got....I'll be  for weeks! I'm not rebooking, I'm here to stay, and I hope the rest of you all are too!:thumbsup2

I don't plan on rebooking for another date. I have previously sailed in October and also in June, both during hurricane season, with no problems. People sail during those months all the time with no problems. Of course, there is always the chance of hurricanes being in the area, but it doesn't happen all the time. I really hope that we don't encounter any bad weather during our cruise, but if we do, we will have to make the best of it.

I am not backing out of this cruise, but, I am going to cover my booty & purchase travel insurance. However, that is often encouraged, hurricane season or not.

piping aboard with you all on this cruise....

Hi INDY1919A4!!

I read your account on what happened on the Fantasy & I believe my DH would behave similarly; walking about the ship & taking cues from the officers & CMs. Although we both have atmospheric science degrees (scientific meteorology (non-journalism)), I am a nurse. This is what patients do - they look to the nurse and look at our faces to see if something is wrong in certain situations.

Welcome to our cruise!!!

Yes, he's had to moderate a few posts - he wouldn't let someone say a Captain sucked..... In any case, I agree. Hurricane season is 6 months long & encompasses all of summer vacation. It's pretty difficult to avoid...... This cruise will most likely be the last time we pull DD out of school. She'll be in 1st grade and missing 4 days of school (they have off Fri Oct 18). She's missing a week this Dec of Kindergarten. The school does not excuse vacations, so they will be unexcused absences. We'll be sailing in Mar & Aug 2014 instead of Mar & Oct like in 2013. Yep, Aug is still hurricane season. That's the way it goes!!!

I posted this on another thread, but it's relevant so I copied it over here~

DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT COMPARING THIS TO THE PEOPLE THAT CRUISED IN HURRICANE SANDY.

Of note, last year on the Magic, we were sailing back to PC Oct 8th after our 7-night Western Caribbean (Oct 1-8 ). It got crazy that last night. 30-40 knot winds (according to the TV channel that had that info), ship pitching back & forth. DD slept thru it. DH took down all of the hangers in the closet because they were banging back & forth. The closet door in the stateroom next to us would slam open & shut, open & shut (THAT was terribly annoying). DH & I didn't sleep, but also didn't get sick. The Magic made it in and it was COLD & windy & rainy & yuck. She also made it back out that same evening, but the Dream stayed in port the day (Sunday) after when it was much worse. There are videos from the Royal Caribbean ship that left when the Dream stayed & they are crazy (they were posted in the now closed thread). They had 100mph wind gusts. There are lots of videos & they are similar to what I saw on the Fantasy.

That storm wasn't even a hurricane, although being Oct 8th it was during hurricane season. It was just a powerful storm system with non-hurricane characteristics.

Risks of cruising. Big boat on even bigger body of water. I'm not canceling any of our 5 upcoming cruises on DCL.

So from looking here it seems you all are a hard core crew of cruisers,...

So have any of you read anything about the bunch on the ship now about problems, delays, Missing items????

So does anyone have any cool excursions to recommend on the western.. I need Some real Shock and Awe for the inlaws that are with us??????

Good Morning Everyone!! If you didn't already vote during early voting, get out today and Vote!!!:goodvibes

Hello! :wave2: I'm new to the DISboard, but not new to DCL. This will be our 3rd cruise, 1st on the Fantasy. We have cruised the Dream twice before. I have friends who told me a little about DISboard and FE. We definitely want to sign up for FE, sounds like so much fun. Is there somewhere I can find "the rules" though. I've gotten the gist of it, but want to make sure I have it all figured out, so I can start planning gifts.

My family is myself, DH, DS (10 at cruise time) and DD (6 at cruise time). This time, for the first time, we are bringing along my parents, who will be first time cruisers. We will be in 9046 and 9044.

I saw something about Champagne Girls...I might be interested in that too...tell me more!

Thanks!
Debbie

Welcome!!!!
SSanders is in charge of the FE. He has a list of basics if you look at his signature.

With Champagne Girls, we will get together at a bar for a drink (buy your own and alcoholic or not) on a sea day so we can get to know each other better. Wear pink, we had tiaras and boas and got a nice picture of us all in the atrium when done.

We have to wear pink?! :(
Ok, I will try to find something.

You don't HAVE to wear pink, it's more of a suggestion. Did you see the picture I posted from my last cruise? We threw it together in 2 weeks! I had a pinkish redish shirt....pink boa and pink tiara!

Actually, I might have something. I have a coral-pink maxi dress. I had just read the invite & it said MUST wear pink. I know I won't be packing boas though! Lol

I wrote that. If you don't have pink it's fine. It's for fun, no pressure!!! I promise I will not throw you in the brig!!!! LOL :rotfl:

Really? no pressure......yes, we are pressuring you, don't listen to her! You MUST wear pink....okay, well it's all about having fun... so the maxi dress will count! And my little secret to the pink tiara's $1.00 at Joann Fabrics! It was a steal for how happy it made everyone. Oh and then I bought little stickers to put on them to make them sparkly! In this case, cheesy is okay!:rotfl2:
