I know what to wear so that's not a problem there's always been a question in past interviews that I remember that always makes me inwardly cringe."What are your weaknesses?" what would you answer?

Thanks in advance and all prayers greatly appreciated

Always make your "weaknesses" a positive trait that will be something that they would need for the company.

One of my weaknesses is I cannot STAND being tardy and sometimes make it to affairs and appointments TOO EARLY... ;)

Yup, I agree with Robin above. It's like a trick question, one that always made me nervous! But if you turn it into a positive, you'll look savvy!:thumbsup2

I started out doing the positive trait thing for awhile, but I read that some interviewers don't like that. So I would try to say something that I'm working on. You could say organization is a weakness, but you created a filing system at your old office to get things better organized. Something like that.

I always wanted to be honest and say math. My job has nothing to do with math but it really is my greatest weakness. And bugs too. I don't think they'd like that though. ;)

I've often considered that a trick question....

It really doesn't matter what your weaknesses are...what the interviewer is seeking is how you handle those weaknesses.

I.e.

Say a weakness is that you cannot stand tardiness--(one of mine)--

So for me, I will always strive (professionally) to be some place 10 minutes early, to not ride a deadline until the very last second and to always be on top of my job responsibilities. I try to be mindful of anything I must receive from co-workers and to appreciate if I am not their top priority. But I will always do what I can to help them get me what I need.

(okay--I'm a bit rusty--but you get the idea.)

The weakness is never a problem--it's articulating how you handle it that will in over a potential employer. :)

I always say that my weakness is being too much of a perfectionist but that it helps me focus on trying to be as efficient and productive as possible while continuing to produce high quality work.

That one seems to go over well, especially since I work in accounting where attention to detail is very important.

I appreciate the answers & the time you took so far. Maybe this will help. The position is a Dispatcher, now I have police dispatching experience; this is for a hotel dispatching the housekeeping staff. HR knows I have never worked in the hotel industry but still consider I have experience :goodvibes being a perfectionist or highly detailed oriented is a big plus but this question still makes me cringe. I mean there is such a fine line. :confused3 I admit I am anal about details, my checkbook I record the deposits in black ink & the checks written or ATM withdrawals in red ink. I don't want to come across as a hard a** I've had a big problem with patience (my DH would attest to this!) but I have learned to curtail it & learn from it by working with rescue dogs and becoming calm & assertive (:worship::worship: Cesar Millan) so now that you know a little bit more about me HELP!

Hmm... when being interviewed for this job I know I said, "working until the work is done" (frowned-upon in my previous position; at the end of your shift, you left, period); and, um, "thinking I can do everything so being reluctant to ask for help". I did get hired.

Also, a couple of tips in general:
Lean forward slightly in your chair - shows eagerness and interest in the position
Have a question or two for the interviewer (NOT benefits-related :teeth: )
Shake hands firmly. Most people don't expect that from women, so it will make you more memorable.
Write and mail (vs. e-mail) a thank you note that same day - again, makes you stand out.

GOOD LUCK!

Well, this is actually GREAT! You identify a weakness AND can tell them clearly and lucidly what steps you've taken to overcome it!

Hey all, Well I went in & had my interview I didn't get the dreaded "what is your weakness/strength" per se...It was put another way "We all make mistakes, can you tell me a mistake you made on a job & what you learned from it"

I didn't even think about it, (& I think that's probably the key in any interview), just said the first thing that came to mind. I spoke about a filing mistake that I had made and admitted I had made this mistake because acting as a perfectionist and trying not to leave any unfinished work for my relief dispatcher I was working faster than I should have. A file was misplaced and caused more time wasted than if I had left some work to be done by the other person. I learned that when I start to feel overwhelmed or rushed that is the time to step back, take a breath, and regroup. I also learned that I don't have to do it all.

I felt very relaxed in the interview, we went over my experience. and THEN BIG HUGS to all advice givers/well wishers on boards. I got the question "Why do you want to work here"? I wanted to show that I knew all about this hotel & that I had stayed at some of their affiliates..one of them gives chocolate chip cookies at check-in. I said "When I think of stellar customer service with theme parks I think of Disney, when I think of this when it comes to a hotel the name _____________ (where I was applying) is the one I think of. I further said how I felt when I stayed at __________ that it was always a warm welcome, like coming home, and then mentioned the cookies at _________. I stated that _________ went above & beyond in making their guests feel welcome & I wanted to be a part of that.

This was met with a warm smile & lots of writing

When the interview was wrapping up she asked "Do you have any questions for me?" Now prior to the advice I must admit I had stupidly in the past said something lame like, no..I don't think so....(always believing that this was NOT the time/place to ask about benefits, etc. so what else was there to ask? :confused3)

THIS time I was prepared! I said that I was curious as to where I would be working, in an office? a cubicle? a seperate room? Long story short, she seemed a little surprised ( & I believe impressed) that I even asked, which made me feel like no one ever had.

Next thing I know the interview had NOT ended & we went on a "tour" we saw the laundry room, the break room, the supply room, and then she took me to where the dispatcher office was. I asked questions throughout (how many rooms, how many room attendants each shift, do you provide uniforms for me, et al......it felt natural & a comfortable conversation. She then left me with the dispatchers for about a 1/2 hr . We clicked very well , they showed me & explained the computer system, and the average day behind the scenes.

When it was done I walked to my car with the confidence of Chef Gordon Ramsay and the calm assertiveness of Dog Whisperer Cesar Millan.

Next week a decision will be made. In the meanwhile thanks again for all your help, I hope this thread can help someone else with those interview jitters and I'll let you know either way when I find out

Fantastic! Now, send a thank you note - via the post office, not e-mail. Obviously, again thank her/them for meeting with you and express interest again in the position. Add a line or two about how you think you/your experience can benefit the company.

Nothing too wordy - just a few handwritten or handprinted lines; again, something to make you stand out.

:thumbsup2 Wow, sounds GREAT!!! The tour sounds promising, hope it's all worth it!!!

Thank you all for your caring (I love my fellow Dissers :lovestruc ) and sound advice. A "Thank You" note is going into the mail first thing in the morning.

Update to follow later in the week............

Blessings,
:grouphug:

Just wanted to wish you the best of luck!! I am praying for you!!

Looking forward to hearing an, "I got the job!!!!"
