I just started potty training my oldest DD 2 1/2 and its been 3 days and she has gone in the potty each time with no accidents. I have been putting pullups on her for nap and for night time

My dilemma,is what do you do when you are first starting out with the training like I am,and you have to go in the car . Do you just hope they dont have an accident for the 30 min ride or so,or do you think I should put a pull-up on her in the car until we are further along in the potty training.
I just dont want to confuse her by dong the pullups in the daytime, other than naps, know what I mean.Or is the answer just to put her in her undies and take lots and lots of changes of clothes, lol :confused3

So what do you all suggest. This will be our first car ride in past few days, that why Im not sure how to handle it.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated

Have her go before you leave. :thumbsup2 Have her use the bathroom when out when you need to also.

Good luck. My 2 1/2 year old will use the potty most of the time. She still wears diapers, though. Mostly because she is so small she will fall in any public toilets and she doesn't like the folding seat cover. That and I haven't been able to find underwear small enough for her yet, but I am sure there are some out there.

We plan to do the no diapers thing next month or so.

Is she dry when she wakes up from nap and nights? If she is get ride of the pull ups (if you are comfortable with that and using bathrooms outside your house.)

Does she every tell you when she needs to use the potty instead of only going when you suggest it?

I agree with DisneyPhD.

Another thing you can try, if you're concerned about the cleanliness of your car and the car seat (which is actually pretty important, you don't want your child sitting on a urine-soaked seat) ....

You can buy very thin pads that medical supply places will call "chucks." I don't know what they're really called, maybe underpads or something like that. It's common to have them under the sheets in hospital beds, and they are all the rage at nursing homes.

They are very thin, but absorbent on one side and water-resistant on the other. They can get wet on the business end but keep everything below it dry.

That, and a change of clothes or 3.

Not a bad suggestion. I will keep that in mind. I went with the pray and ask if they need to go a lot.

I guess they are chucks, because that is what you do when they get wet, chuck them. I have some they gave me after the baby was born, to put both under the baby and me depending on the need. :rotfl:

My dd3 has been potty trained since right before her 2nd birthday. We did pull-ups for a couple of months but I stopped using them because they were holding her back. She knew they were there and if she didn't want to make the effort, or stop what she was doing, she'd just go in it. That's not the point of potty training. So we ditched them and went to panties -- all the time, day and night. We had a few wet beds, but she never once peed in the carseat -- we did have to stop a few times on longer trips to run into McDonald's or Wendy's for her to go. Make the bathroom the last stop before you go through the door and show him/her where the bathroom is when you arrive at your destination.

Babies R Us also sells something called a Piddle Pad or something like that. It's a round black pad and you make your child sit on it in the car seat and it will keep the car seat from getting wet.

This was the issue with my older DD too. If she was in pull ups, she just didn't use the potty unless it was convenient.

We took them away, she had 2 accidents and then that was it (once of each kind.) She was dry every morning at this time and after nap for a while.

I think that is what we have to do with my youngest, it is me holding back right now. She is just too tiny to use public restrooms, and she is uncomfortable on the big seats. I don't want to push her into it and have it hold her back in the long run. She will use the small kid size toilets at the gym and the zoo just fine. :thumbsup2

See with my girls (who were bothe potty trained by 25 months) we did use Pull ups for car rides and if we were going on a plane and such.. for a couple months after they were trained..just in case. They used the Princess pull ups and i told them they were special undies and they can't get the princess' wet, or they would be very sad that they got dirty. We never told them they were like diapers that they could go to the bathroom in , they thought they were the same as undies..we never had a problem with using them that way.
Also when they peed on the toilet they got a small sticker to put on their chart..poop got a bigger one and if they stayed dry all day they got their choice of the "special" sticker stash we had (Disney, glitter, and REALLY big ones..lol)

When potty training my first two (ds 15mths older than dd - trained at same time), I would occasionally put a pull-up over their undies when we were out and about. They got that uncomfortable feeling of wetting their pants and I didn't have to worry about the after affects of the accidents.

I used this trick when I couldn't be sure to get to a bathroom immediately because when they started they could wait very long. This was especially helpful on plane rides as there are times when you aren't allowed to leave the seat.

We kept a potty in the car (min van) and if it was an emergency then we pulled over used it. In the very beginning of potty training we made sure we didn't go anywhere the first two weeks or so that was more than 15 or twenty minutes and we went right before getting in the car.

Thank you all so much for your suggestions.

We decided to just go for it and only did the undies in the car. She went right before leaving and was dry in the car,we did put a rec. blanket underneath her just in case, and when we arrived at our friends house, she went in their toilet. Im so proud of her and me ,lol for surviving our first car ride.

We also do the stickers,1 for pee and 2 for poop, and she goes to the bathroom quite often,so dont ask about my sticker collection,it sure is dwindling down fast:rotfl:

Alexy-thanks for this tip,it might be worth a shot for those trips where I cant pull off anywhere, but I also ordered a potty to go by Fisher Price, because between the two girls,Im sure it will come in handy once they are both potty trained.

thanks again for all the tips and suggstions,I will have to look into those chucks and things from BRU,and once we get past the 2 week mark or so of potty training ,maybe I will just go for it and eliminate the pullups at naps and night time also.
I think because she is such a big water drinker (we are working on this too) that it might take a little longer to accomplish the nighttime training.
Thanks again

I think we might try the panties with pull ups over them in May if she is recently potty trained. Traveling is too hard with a recently potty trained child.

I want her to be trained so she can use the pool on the cruise. I feel pretty confident she will be fine in the pool. Go before getting in and we have a few hours of safe time, but I will only go about 45 min just in case. However traveling for many hours, and standing in long lines. Pull ups might be a good idea. :thumbsup2

DisneyPhD, have you tried letting your DD either sit backwards on the potty a/o straddling the toilet? A few of my students, both boys & girls, seem to feel more comfortable when they either straddle the toilet a/o turn around backwards. Its like they don't feel like they're going to fall in if they're sitting way back or backwards.

Just a thought, but for the people wo have small children afriad of falling in the potty, try this. Its a folding potty seat.

We had one for our son, and it was a lifesaver. He felt so much more comfortable using it. I got ours at Babies r Us. It was only about $10.

I had that foldidng seat for my 5 yo when she was small....its really convenient and helped her to feel safe, but just watch they can get pinched in the folds....happened more than once....

I know, that is my DD's issue with it. Still it is better then falling in (that happened to my older DD, but it was our own toilet.) She had used the potty and was very excited. DH took the seat off to show her, and then she sat right back down, falling right in. It was a bit of a back slide in potty training, no pun intended.

I barely skimmed the other posts but I did read "have them go before you leave".

I still make my almost 6 yo & 3 yo go before we leave the house & right when we get back (more so the 3 yo).

I also have one of those foldable plastic toilets for in a store, etc. like in the picture.

But we mainly use the potty seat in the back of the car. I keep lysol spray & wipes in there & bags just incase #2 happens but luckily it hasn't yet.

DS potty trained at 27 months and we used the folding seat and the car portable one. Sometimes their little bladders can't handle a long wait!

We would also go at home, then when we got to a store, then before we left the store, etc. just to be safe. After a few months it really gets much easier.

Now DS hiding and pooping in the corner while wearing underwear, that is another story :confused3 :lmao: . I had to spend a week with him basically naked in the house before he would poo in the potty. The sticker chart helped as did the lollypops he got if he did it. Hey, I'm not above bribery. And everyone was amazed after all the issues that he was fully trained at 2 yrs. 3 mo.

I agree w/you!!!! My son was potty trained at 2 yr too! It took three weeks and he was completely done! I never used pull-ups or diapers at night, just training underwear (Gerber). If I had to go out, I put plastic (gerber also) over his training pants. He did have some accidents after the three weeks, but very rarely. My mother always said, "Once you decide to take the diaper off, never put it back on, or it will confuse them". My SIL has been "training" my neice for 1 1/2 now since she is using pull-ups!!!!! It was three weeks of pure he**, and I don't think I would have been able to follow through with it if I wasn't a SAHM, but I'd rather have three weeks of torture than a year of it!!!! Good luck!!!!

We are potty training our 2 year old too! She has gone 3 days in panties w/out an accident. That included 2 days of being gone all day shopping and stuff. I bought the piddle pad at BRU but haven't used it yet, I will today. I also have bought a folding potty seat for out and about but it is cushioned. Here's a link to it: http://www.pottytrainingsolutions.c...296&WCSESSID=18c37e256daa00419cfbc81c1e79ae6a
This seat is a little bit bulkier but my DD or DS has never complained about sitting on it and I have used it a few times after the kids have gone to the bathroom.
