Husband and I are thinking of taking our crew to Disney for NYE at the end of 2017. We are DVC members so we would likely stay at our home report, Polynesian, and arrive 12/31 and stay through the marathon (or maybe just a 10K lol). Wondering if someone could tell me what their NYE experience was at Disney and the days following. What are some suggestions for midnight?!

Just got home from a Christmas week trip! As for NYE specifically, my group of 5 headed to Epcot around 10 pm. Stayed at the Swan so it was an easy walk! No issues or lines getting in at the International Gateway entrance.

Once there, the atmosphere was great- full on dance parties in China, Japan, and Italy complete with lasers and even pyrotechnics. There was a bar or pop up bar frequently around the World Showcase so if you're interested, drinks were easy to find (but lines were long.) Overall, it was super crowded, but CMs kept the traffic moving and the ground was taped out with walking lanes and sitting areas. Everyone was in great spirits and I didn't find too many obnoxiously drink people.

As far as fireworks, we finally decided on a spot around 11:10 as they start Illuminations at 11:40. We found a spot behind bushes in Japan which wasn't an ideal spot, but completely fine and not crowded around us. I'd recommend picking a spot and sitting no later than when we did as areas got full and you had to be in a taped off sitting/ viewing area. (Alternatively, you could be one of the people that we saw camping out around noon earlier in the day when we headed over to get lunch. Unless you have Fastpasses, I wouldn't recommend counting on rides that day- lines were insane.)

Fireworks were amazing (illuminations plus the NYE add on) and the finale was one of the most memorable things I've ever seen. They also recognized the countries who had celebrated the New Year earlier in the day with individual fireworks. Highly recommended!

New Year's Day found Epcot noticeably less crowded- it was SO nice comparatively to earlier that week. Easily able to use our fast passes and find seating for lunch before heading to the airport. Have to say that we talked about arriving the 30th for future trips and staying the week after based on the lowerish crowds.

Hope this helps a bit!

Thanks for posting! Do you think EPCOT was less crowded because everyone went to magic kingdom, or just lower crowds in general?

I think it was more so because everyone was tired from the night before/ headed home. Epcot can also absorb a lot more people, so comparatively it may have just felt better. (This is likely the same case for NYE. We saw the MK fireworks from the Cali Grill on the 30th as they do them both the 30th and the 31st if you're wanting to see both!)

We were there over the weekend for a non-park weekend trip. Went for the Citrus Bowl Saturday AM. After the football game(lets not talk about that-UL played horribly), went back to the Wyndham Garden in Disney Springs and rested. Then walked to DS around 7ish, caught a bus to the Polynesian, went to Trader Sam's patio and immediatly found an open table. I was shocked. I thought it would be crowded! Had a drink and split appetizers, gt a Disney NYE hat they were passing around and watched the 7:30pm MK fireworks. Monorailed to GF, went to Mizners lounge on 2nd floor. Most table taken but found a tall table that we could stand at and had a drink. The Orchestra band was played, people dancing on the first floor and we noticed they had a Balloon drop ready to go for midnight. Then went to Contemporary. Went to Wave to have a drink. Very boring at the bar. Tried to get up to California Grill but couldnt figure it out! Decided we wanted to get away from the MK area because we didn't want to get stuck in the traffic after the 11:50pm fireworks(we had actually Monorail bar crawled Friday night too and saw the late fireworks from the Contemporary) so walked to MK and caught a bus to Port Orleans to watch Yee Haa Bob. Only had to stand for 10 minutes before a table opened up!! Stayed there till after his show stopped after Midnight. We already had our hats from Trader Sams but they did pass out the paper horns to blow for the NYE countdown. Was going to leave after that but saw a dance party going on outside so ended up there till they shut down around 12:30 . Then took a cab back to our hotel. Granted, we did not go inside the parks but I was amazed at the how easily we got around since it was NYE!

Fireworks were amazing on NYE! I highly recommend it. We arrived around 8pm and walked around WS. It was crowded but manageable. :)
