NYC streets are EMPTY

Another saturday night in new york. This time was soooo different. We got a parking spot mid town, with no trouble. Didn't have to fork over $40.00 in a lot. No traffic to speak of. No one pushing and shoving as your walking, even in times square. And thats crowded in the harshest of snow storms. I guess most people did leave the city in time for the convention.

If I remember MOST of the people in the streets of NYC on a Saturday night were tourists! I don't think anyone in their right mind would've scheduled a trip to NY during the RNC except the delegates!

BTW, congrats on the parking space!

Our company usually schedules weekly visits to NYC, but canceled this week. Any who are going are doing so on their own. We've heard many of our contacts might close their offices because ofthe tight security.

Sounds like New Yorkers are having as much fun as those
folks around Boston had during the DNC. They need to have
these things in Iowa in the middle of some guys cornfield.
Everyone bring a tent. Things would start to get real very
quickly. LOL!

Your post tempts me to go into the city and do something today. But somehow I feel better just hanging out in Brooklyn this weekend. It's going to be bad enough going into work for the next couple of days. Might as well put it off till then.

you have my deepest sympathies, missy. I took vacation this week because I didn't want to commute through Penn. did you notice that they even have police captains patrolling the corridors of the station?

The freshmen are moving into Fordham University at Lincoln Center today and the rest of the students on Monday - imagine all those poor kids and parents with small moving vans trying to go thru tunnels and over bridges - what a mess!!!!! Fortunately, DS (who is a senior) got to move in earlier (on Thursday) because his presence was required to assist freshmen today so he actually made out OK. What a shock today must have been for some of the freshmen (and probably more so for their parents) if they had to drive around any of the protests (like around MSG coming out of the Lincoln Tunnell) or later in the day around Columbus Circle near Central Park (about a block from the Fordham campus)!!!!!

I live in the West Village.....Greenwich Village on the West side of the Island. We are filled with restaurants that are usually filled with lines waiting during brunch time on Sunday. As Lisa and I were out and about today we noticed no lines and empty tables at some of the hottest dining spots. That NEVER happens on a Sunday in the summer.

The streets were empty except for the many many police officers patrolling. The skies were clear except for the Fuji blimp and helicpoters covering the protest march.

Eerie, but kind of cool.

I can't understand why they picked NYC! Wasn't there someplace else they could have gone that wouldn't have been this disruptive to the people that live and work there? I know the security would be tough anywhere these days and it would have been disruptive anywhere also...it just seems to me that NY was NOT the best choice for this.

Having the convention in NYC was another one of Karl Rove's brilliant "photo op" ideas . . .

I read somewhere that the original plan was for Bush to give some sort of speech at "Ground Zero" then walk to the Garden to accept the nomination. . . but some of the families of the 9/11 victims got word of it and raised all kinds of hell so as far as I know they scrapped the idea.


Bottom line though is they decided to have the convention in NYC in hopes of exploiting the 9/11 tragedy for political purposes and it'll be interesting to see if they try and do so. .

Since subtlety has never been one of Rove's trademarks in the past, I'm sure if it happens it'll be blatant and easy to spot. . .

I agree, I think it was a really bad choice for the RNC to be here in NY. It really is just disruptive and annoying, especially to a lot of NYers who already dont like Bush to begin with. I came back Saturday from a trip to Long Island and it was already chaotic in and around Penn Station. There are only 2 exits you can use...I cant even imagine the hassle it's going to be for LIers to come into work every morning and go home each night! I totally feel for them. Another annoyance...there are these white barriers all along the sidewalks surrounding the Garden, leaving about 10 inches of space for you to squeeze through...that cant be fun during rush hour!

Also, I have never seen so many police officers as I have in the past 24 hours...Penn Station, obviously, was packed with police all over (some carrying some very scary equipment), also along the streets nearby and all over the city...saw quite a bit of them at Grand Central too...along with soldiers and police dogs. It was pretty weird...felt like I lived on a military base or something! This is probably the safest time ever to walk around tho

I am worried about how its going to affect traffic and commuting during the week tho Somehow I managed to get two interviews this week...Why havent these people taken the week off and gotten out of the city?!
