Okay...just got home to post. Applied for the NYC Marathon between 12 and 3. Then, completed a scavenger hunt task and loaded pic and entrant number on MMM FB page. They will choose 50 names tomorrow (from about 3,000) for early entrance. Please send some pixie dust my way - I REALLY want in for this one next November . . . :wizard:

good luck!! i just finished yesterday...it was my first full, and man, there is no city like new york. yes the course is tough...but the crowd support is none other. at mile 15 i asked myself what i got myself into, at mile 20 i thought there is no way in hell i'm doing this again, at mile 23 i picked it up and told myself it was just another training run in cp, ran into the finish with a huge smile...and now i'm thinking about throwing my name in the hat again for next year :lmao:

Good luck with that lottery.

Good to hear it was a good choice for a first marathon too. Congtatulations!

I'm entering the lottery once the paycheck hits the bank (the first part of the month is rough with rent, but I'm doing ok!)!!

I've already decided if I don't get the lottery I'm going the charity route. That starting line is mine 11-6-2011!!!! The Mile 24 Water Station volunteering was tons of fun...but next year I want more!

Today's dumb question from one who will probably be a first time lottery entrant, do they pocket the cash whether you're selected or not? Or do they only cash it if you are selected? I know Ironman has taken my money for the Hawaii race for the last 4 years or so including a few days ago with no luck yet..

$11 Application Fee Taken Now
$196 Entrance Fee Taken Only If Accepted (Late March or April)

They're about to announce the 10 who got in through the scavenger hunt (I think...but it was only 10. Not 50.). I didn't do it, but I'll try to list the names here...

Oh wow...they flashed them so fast. All the winners were from NY or NJ. It's totally random, though, so really you could have been from anywhere.

They close the lottery at 11:59pm April 19 and will do the lottery for everyone else after that.

(You can join NYRR when you apply and sort of balance out the marathon cost - but you don't get that money back if you don't get in through the lottery.)

Darn, we didn't get picked. OK, guess I'll wait to find out in the spring. popcorn::

Yep. I'm researching the charity options as well. I've decided that barring injury I *AM* going to do it in 2011. If I have to go the charity route to do so, so be it. :)

Hey this is news to me! They picked 25 more and will pick an additional 25 before noon! Don't give up guys! :thumbsup2

Or wait, maybe it should be.... :scared:

Nope...they picked 50. They just tortured us by releasing the names little by little until noon! LOL! All 50 names are posted on the NYC Marathon website! And, can you believe it, I am NOT included?!! Now I have to wait until April like everyone else. Bummer!

Wow, a race that makes Disney look cheap.

Good luck to everyone in the lottery.

in defense of my beloved city...

a) it's new york city. everything here costs 3x the amount it should. you'll learn that rather quickly :lmao:

b) think about how much $ this race costs the city - you need to shut down 5 bridges, main streets in all the boroughs, find a way to get 45,000+ people onto an island where the only way to get there from manhattan is via ferry (unless you cross into brooklyn and take the verranzo-narrows bridge..which is where the marathon starts from so it shuts down really early anyways). not to mention all the police presence that is necessary to keep the course in order and keep the 2 million spectators under control.

c) yes nyrr does charge a ton for a few select races (including the marathon) but they keep most of their races at a great price (most of their half marathons are around $25) throughout the year and they do SO much for the community...and they are on a non-profit, so once all the overhead costs are covered, all the $ made from the marathon (which is obviously their biggest money maker of the year) goes back into their great programs

i mean i obviously love disney, but man, there is nothing like running new york. yes the course is tough for beginners but you won't be alone - i think this year out of a field of 45,000, they said about 20,000 were first-timers. even though at mile 16 i said there is no effin way i'm doing this again, i kinda already want to throw my name in the lottery again :lmao:

Oh well, guess now I have $196 more for Christmas shopping. I'll wait like the rest of us. Darn it. :surfweb:

I've heard that a group can enter the lottery and then if one person gets in, all the group members get in. Is that true? If so, any interest in a WISH group for 2012?

Don't think that's true. The only way that could logistically happen is 4 years down the road if everyone in the "group" gets rejected for 3 years and doesn't get in through a charity.

Charities and international groups are the only ones I've heard that actually have guaranteed spots. Otherwise all the clubs around here would be entering en masse.

I've never heard of that either. I think if they offered that, everyone would do it. I know I would. ;)
