Dh is going to a night Yankees game in Sept. with a few friends. They are planning on spending the night(god help me!! LOL) and would like to stay in the Times square area I think. It doesn't have to be fancy just clean and SAFE!!! Nothing too expensive either!! Any suggestions? Dh went to NYC a few weeks ago and said he noticed a hotel called the Skyway...anyone hear of this hotel?

Thanks and I'll make sure to come here for help when I GO AWAY FOR A NIGHT!!!! LOL

Does he know how far Times Square is from Yankee Stadium and how many train changes he has to make to get from Yankee Stadium on the Eastside to Times Square on the West side?

Personally, I'd tell him to pick a hotel closer to 42nd Street and Grand Central Station so that he just has to deal with the 4 train and can be there 20 minutes after the game is over.

There are not too many reasonable hotels in midtown. At a minium you're looking at $200/$250 per night.

I did a search on the Skyway Hotel and the one I found was in Astoria, Queens. Is that the one he's looking at? That would not at all be good for someone going to Yankee Stadium, even worse commute that the west side.

Personally, tell him to forget about Yankee Stadium, tell him he'd much rather see the see the Atlanta Braves play Spring Training at DISNEY'S WIDE WORLD OF SPORTS and you'll be glad to go with him.

:teeth: :teeth:

Personally I dislike the Braves as much as the Yankees but I really love the area the Wide World of Sports Stadium is in. (Hint, right next to Disney :D And the Disney Hotels are much more reasonable then NYCity ones.

Hi I agree Times Square is far from Yankee Stadium. If he really wants to stay in the Times Square area then he should see the Mets at Shea because you can take 1 subway train direct to Shea from Times Square! (Real Met fan here!)
Try www.nycvisit.com That is the NYC convention and visitors site. Lots of good NYC info and possibly discounts. This is one site that you can trust. As far as I know the Skyway hotel is in Queens and no where near Yankee Stadium.
I don't know of any hotels near Yankee Satdium, which is in the Bronx.
Hope he and his frineds have a great time , even if he is seeing the wrong team;) !

Days Inn Midtown. I think it's on 35th. A block off Times Square. Great location. I have stayed there twice and it has been clean and very reasonably priced.

Enjoy!

Kim, I just pricelined a room at the Sheraton in Times Square for $120 (it came to $144 with the taxes and fees). In my experience, in New York, if you pay for a cheap hotel, you get a cheap hotel--bars on the windows, doors that don't lock, beat up furniture, etc (and that was a Best Western).

What night of the week is he going? Sometimes, they offer specials online on weekends (if they happen to be going on a Sunday, the Rennissance in Times Square often has great rates).

So Karen, what is considered cheap? Is the Sheraton you mentioned at 144.00 considered cheap? I don't want him staying in a hotel all beat up with bars on the window! LOL If they need to spend 200 to be safe then that's what they will spend-I don't need my stomach all in knots thinking they are unsafe!!!
Thanks!!

The Marriott Marquis has got to be in the best location. It is located on Broadway right in Times Square!! If you have time, you can even take in a show! Prices range from $200+

Personally, I didn't care for the Marroit Marquis- it was so busy, cram packed full of people, lines for the elevators, etc. And, it is a bit pricy.

I paid a little over $100 a night for a Best Western near Times Square (hotwire.com) and it was fine. Not chic by any stretch of the imagination, but clean and safe enough.

I've also heard good things about the Hotel Edison- clean, safe, moderately priced. And the restaurant/diner attached (I forget the name, but Neil Simon wrote a play that was set here) is great! Maybe called the Polish Room, or Polish Tea Room? Anyway, its 1 block N of the Marriot, great location, good inexpensive food, which is a miracle for Times Square.

I'm actually leaving for NYC in a week, but staying with friends, and I'll be seeing The Frogs with Nathan Lane and Chris Kattan- so excited!

We are staying at the Marriott Marquis in August. We got it on Priceline for only $110 per night!!! I highly recommend going through Priceline.com

I've stayed in the Hotel Edison. Many, many times. I used to travel for work, and that was my NYC hotel of choice (and I could have pretty much stayed anywhere I wanted). It's not fancy, but it's safe and they treated me SO well there. They remembered me, called me by name as I arrived each time. I had a favorite room, and they always had it ready and waiting for me--even when I arrived at 7:00am after a long nights travel. (Ask for a corner room on the northwest side of the building.)

Like I said, it was not fancy. But it was clean and safe, and sounds like it might be perfect for them.

Dont know if this will help you out at all but in the past when i had yankees tickets we would drive down from CT and make a weekend out of it. We would stay at the Grand Hyatt near grand central station. Its the official hotel of the New York Yankees which basically meens the visiting team stays there. If you are into baseball and would enjoy meeting the visiting teem and getting autographs this the place for you. Also the subway you take to get to the staduim is located right next store which is very convient. Also this hotel is not too far from times square either!

Kim, when I go to NY, I usually wind up spending around $200 a night. Sometimes, I hit it good and get something cheaper, but usually it's around $200. If I booked the Sheraton through the website, I would have paid $200 for it. I've never stayed there before, but I trust the Sheraton name, and I know it's in a good location.

If your hubby is 100% sure he's going, and doesn't mind pricelining it, I'd say have him do a four star hotel in mid town central, and see what he comes up with.

I was also going to recommend the Grand Hyatt but I see it's already been done. This is probably the best choice for convenience for a night game. Other options in the area of Grand Central are the Marriott Eastside and The Waldorf. There is another hotel right on the subway line that's recently been redone. Problem is I can't remember the name! I'll see if I can find it on-line.

The Marriott Marquis gets mixed reviews but I've loved it every time I've stayed there on business.

Funny, my friend who dances in the show Movin Out just recommended the Hotel Edison!! Apparently it is right across from the theatre the show is at!!
I need to look into the Grand Hyatt because they are going to a Yankees/Sox game!!! That would be great!

Thanks everyone!!

Hilton Times Square has my vote if he really wants to stay in Times Square. It is about a block from the subway, and it a great hotel. It is very secure, too--they check your room key before you can get on the elevator. It has a great location, and it is just a beautiful hotel inside. I highly recommend it.

Uh oh! I didn't realize we were aiding a Sox fan. ;) ;) They might want to consider staying in the team hotel!

The hotel I was thinking of is The Metropolitan. Here's a link.
Metropolitan

I don't think it's spectacular but it is right at an eastside subway stop and has recently been re-done. There is also a W Hotel on Lexington Avenue and The Benjamin Hotel is basically "behind" The Waldorf and just up from the W.

Actually he is a HUGE yankees fan(shhh!) but the other guys are sox fans!!
