DH and I along with some friends are thinking of going to New York this thanksgiving for the macy's parade. We have never been to New York EVER.

I was wondering if any of my dis friends could offer some suggestions.
Is this a good time to go? will we freeze? where is the best place to watch the parade? where should we stay on a budget.......but nice. Any help we could get would be great!

thanks

Oh it is so much fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We stayed at a Courtyard by Mariott near times Square- but it was on points so the only thing we paid for was parking-- over $200 for 5 days.

It may or may not be cold- it was freezing the year we went. My DH went down for a spot on the curb at 5 am... not knowing how "Early" early should be in order to get a good spot.

He was propositioned by a um, lady of the evening and said all he wanted from her was a cup of coffee. :lmao: She declined.:rotfl2:

Anyway- I hope you have a great time. I'[d love to go back one day. I think it's something everyone should do once in their life.

We did it as a family. Froze our butts off and we were layered to the hilt!!! I recommend getting tons of those hand warmer deals. You the kind you break and shake. On the flipside, you might have good weather, who knows?

I would do it again however the kids might not. They would skip the parade and want to see all the sights.

As far as staying there cheaply, NYC is not cheap. Can't help you there. As pp poster said if you are driving like we did, you will spend $$$ on parking, just for the car. And then you grab taxi's on top of that.

The night before the parade you can go and watch them blow up all the balloons-we usually go do that every year!

Ohhh absolutely!!!! I will look for the info....

The balloons start getting inflated at about 4-6pm on 77th & 81st Streets between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue. The best time to go see them is around 5pm and the events ends at 10pm. It's most fun seeing them inflated. If you go too late, you'll miss most of the action.

My DH worked in NYC from 2000-2004 and lived in Hoboken. Kiddos in h.s. so we stayed in MA but commuted via Amtrak 2x a month to see DH and NYC!!! I just LOVE NYC!

Thanksgiving in NYC is FABULOUS. Some years can be cold cold cold and other years not so bad. You never know with the Northeast.

We have stayed at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square...lovely.

Get tickets to the Rockettes Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall.

Here is the link...I believe they are ALREADY on sale. http://www.radiocity.com/

Thanksgiving into Christmas is my favorite time in NYC. :thumbsup2

How crowded is it the might before? That sounds like something I might bring the kids to, not sure they would put up with the day of

I would go without a car.

Any official NYC cab ride to anywhere in Manhattan will cost you $40 from JFK. Going back to it, I want to say there's a $40 flat rate from inside the city, but I can't quite remember. Driving in the City is a very scary experience, even from the back of a Cab, and even from the eyes of a So Cal driver (and I know we can be terrifying at times, but oh man, that was intense!).

You could also use the Subway system from the airport and back. Once you get a little used to the subway, you'll feel extra comfortable with it after a few times. But DON'T use it late at night!

Once you're in the city, any walk is like nothing. Everything is within walking distance (especially since the blocks feel so short, and there's so much to look at you'll forget how long you've walked).

Most rooms in Manhattan are expensive. It's just how it is. Avoid any hotel immediately within or near Times Square, as they'll be the msot expensive you'll find. Don't go too far out, but really, Times Square is a ginormous tourist trap, and gets EXTREMELY crowded during the holidays. As does the rest of the City, but Times Square, and anything that features a "Classic New York Christmas" will be overpriced and crowded (TS, Bloomie's, Macy's, skating at Rockefeller Center, horse drawn carriage rides in Central Park etc.)

ETA: I really don't mean it to sound negative, hte whole NYC in the holidays, honestly it's one of my favorite times I've gone. i just want to make sure you're prepared for the crowds and the reality of the prices you'll meet once you're there :)

It is packed at the balloon blowing up site. DH went once, and will not go back. I like to do it every few years.

We went in 2002 or 2003...its been years BUT we opted for a Tour Guide. Several families with one guide. I remember it was pretty reasonable and having the TG, we were able to manuver around real easy. I believe seeing it once was AWESOME. No need to go over and over again. OP, I would consider going to the Balloon Inflation!!!

I found this site....

Looks interesting....this part....Wednesday Afternoon Balloon Inflation

Approximately 2:30pm until 6pm

We'll take you by motorcoach to the festive area where the Parade begins to take shape. You'll see the grand balloons being inflated, take lots of pictures and perhaps hear commentary from parade veterans. Afterwards we'll take you back to midtown via an abbreviated Holiday Lights tour. Roundtrip motorcoach is included, along with the services of a professional tour guide while on the bus. The balloon-inflation area is self-guided.

The balloon inflation can be more fun that the parade! The parade gets boring at times, if you end up in a spot where noone stops to perform. But it's still fun and worth doing at least once.

I've never been that time of year that I didn't freeze - silk long undies are a big help, though!

Looks like a great idea expect for the 4 night min, we're in NJ so staying 4 nights in the city not really something we would look to do

So if I didn't stay in times square what would you recomend? If we drove....is there somewhere we could stay and then take the subway into the city for the parade and other sights?

If you want to stay cheap--stay in Jersey. NYC is a small fortune over Thanksgiving weekend. If the route doesn't change this year--the best place to watch is right around Columbus Circle. That's where the least crowds seemed to be the last 2 years.

And the weather this year is going to be rainy. So just be prepared with ponchos and rain gear. I do the parade every year, the head of Macy's Studio has tracked the rain, we all are ready with the rain suits for under the balloon jumpsuits.

I worked in NYC for more than 10 years. For decorations and atmosphere, this is the absolute best time of the year. As was mentioned before, be sure to watch the balloons inflated the night before, and try to take in the Christmas show at Radio City Music Hall. The decorations at Rockerfeller Center will be up, too.

As for crowds, at night (when the shoppers come out) it is shoulder to shoulder - but it is great!

You could stay in Jersey City, then take the PATH train to 31st street and either hop a subway or walk from there. The PATH trains are only a few bucks and save you from paying NYC parking rates. You have to ride the subways while in NYC (just to say that you did)...

DISNEYBAMAFAN--how did you end up a Roll Tide fan living in new jersey?
