In considering purchasing into DVC I see for a family with 3 children we'd need a 2 bedroom unit. Do the room occupancies apply to members as well as those just paying to stay like in a hotel? A one bedroom unit would be plenty of space for us, but if we would have to take a 2 bedroom everywhere, it changes the value a lot since we can all stay in a single room at the deluxe on site properties.

How does a family of 5 work in using points for other collections? Would we have to use double the amount of points that a family of 4 would use to stay in 2 rooms in a hotel instead of 1?

Oh my! I was simply asking if as owners we'd have any additional leeway to those staying as a rental. I wasn't anticipating a 29 page thread. With not reading the mentioned question, I'm guessing by it being 29 pages, that it isn't like owning a regular rental home at the beach...where owners can do things renters are not.

Have you thought about adoption?

Objection! Your honor, that question is irrelevant and argumentitive.

Sustained.

My apologies. No further questions your honor.

I am with you 3kids on that one, didn't make a bit of sense.

Hope you realize I was trying to save you from "stepping into it" regarding the occupancy thing. Some folks really get very persnickety about occupancy and will really tell you what they think. It isn't always a friendly subject.

my3kids,
I believe that rinkwide was trying to keep the tone light with some humor. Having read all 29 pages of the "Occupancy Thread", I must admit that I found it funny...

Now about your question. To summarize the thread, some believe that the DVC contract should be strictly applied, and that no more than 4 should be allowed in a studio or one bedroom. Others point to the fact that the guides actively promote that 5 can use them, that member services happily accepts reservations for 5 (at least in a one bedroom, there is some indication that there may be a change afoot with studios), and that a one bedroom is certainly larger than most hotel rooms that "officially" sleep 5. Still others question whether you would want to have more space (and a second bathroom), especially as your kids get older. You will not receive bedding for the 5th person.

Hope this helps!
Mike

The DVC guides say 5 can sleep in a 1 BR, and member services will book 5 into a 1 br? Honestly, it could make a difference in whether we buy or not. Thanks to those of you who actually made sense in their postings. I certainly was not asking if we could sneak in a kid, simply asking what the rules were as they pertained to members.

If your DVC guide says you can have 5 in a one bedroom, I'd be very tempted to ask him/her to put that in writing. The stated maximums (in the contract documents) for a one bedroom are 4 persons plus an infant child under 3. A Pac 'n Play portable crib is provided for the infant.

That said, there have been reports that MS will accept a reservation for 5 (all persons over the age of 3) for a 1 bedroom. DVC does not provided bedding to accomodate more than the stated maximum. Those who have 5 generally also bring an aero bed or something similar for the 5th person. AFAIK, DVC does not do bedchecks.

FWIW, I would be totallly shocked if you found a guide willing to put anything in writing that contradicts the DVC contract. Nothing a guide says verbally can override what is in the contract.

It's true that MS/DVC has been pretty forgiving as far as room occupancy goes when the extra person is a child . Would I buy counting on it? Probably not. If DVC ever decides to start enforcing the contract in this area, I'd be stuck. Guess I could always sell, though.

Best wishes and good luck with your decision.

When we did the SSR tour our guide said that my family of five could easily stay in a studio. When I asked about the limit of 4, he said that that was counting adults or big children over 11. I figured this wasn,t so--I just wondered why he gave me this info before I asked specifically about it. BTW my children are 5,9, and 11. IMHO we would need at least a 1BR, but preferrably a 2BR if it is available!

Thread being locked in 3 ..... 2 ..... 1 .....

My very first thoughts when reading the topic and first post was "Dead threads tell no tales".....- I swear

Soon to be a DVC member.

I don't have anything in writing from my guide, but I do have an e-mail from Member Services saying that it is okay to have the 5th person staying in a 1BR. They do mention, however, that no bedding would be provided for that 5th person.

Sorry, but since we have had to close prior threads repeatedly on this topic, occupancy can no longer be discussed here. Thank you.
