Nudity on TCM?!?!?

I have to say I think that is so funny. I am just waiting for the FCC to fine them for "frack". I mean it is so blatant.

They used it on BSG for 4 seasons, and must have gotten away with it. It is still a bit odd to hear things like Mother Frakin' and the like used all the time.

Ah, I did no get into BSG all the way. So it is new to me.

Nudity is prohibited on over-the-air broadcast television between 4AM and 10PM local time. (Since national networks broadcast primetime from 7PM-10PM in the Central Time Zone, and they use the same feed, at the same time, for the Eastern Time Zone, that means that nudity is not ostensibly precluded from the 10PM-11PM timeslot even in the Eastern Time Zone.)

Other than that (i.e., for over-the-air broadcast television stations, between 10PM and 4AM local time, and for all cable networks), the broadcasters (obviously with a lot of input from sponsors) determine what kind of programming they present, and to what standards, as a reflection of the First Amendment rights guaranteed by our Constitution.

TCM is not an over-the-air broadcaster, so they're not subject to any specific governmental limits.

Viewers who prefer not to see certain programming should purchase television equipment with a V-chip, and use it. If certain networks fail to provide adequate warning of what type of programming they're presenting, viewers should complain to the network, and avoid tuning in that channel.

This is just fascinating to me!

I came home the other night from working late. It was probably 11 PM. DS14 was asleep on the couch with the TV on. "Saturday Night Fever" was on. First was a scene where they were in a club where a topless girl was dancing, then they went outside where one of their friends was having unedited sex in the car! I had NO CLUE that content was available on "regular" cable channels! It was very possible it was on TCM.

Several weeks before that there was some foreign film on, and every other word in the subtitles was "f" this, "f" that. I thought it was nice of them to translate it all out for me. ;)

I am not particularly offended, I am just shocked because I had no idea our cheap-o cable subscription had channels showing unedited content.

It costs nothing more to not edit out nudity, so it doesn't make sense to do so for "cheap-o cable", unless there is a legal requirement (again: not applicable to cable, and not applicable to late-night), or more people would be inclined to watch (generally not the case - especially with movies, people want to see the director's vision), or the broadcaster wants to impose their own personal sensibilities on their viewers.

If they're going to edit stuff out, they're better served by editing out whole scenes, to fit in more commercials.

I saw Juliet Mills topless on TCM a couple of weeks ago! It was a 60s or 70s movie with Jack Lemmon. I didn't think she'd bare her bubbies like that! Oh, I saw Jack Lemmon's butt!

A while back, my dh and I were watching Kramer vs Kramer on a regular cable channel....I am not sure what channel we were watching(probably TMC), but I was also caught off guard by scenes of brief nudity...just wasn't expecting it. Then the "f word" was said several times... I was not shocked by the nudity, but hearing the f word on a "regular" cable channel did shock me for some reason.

I've watched TCM for years now..and I'm only 24! Its my favorite channel and Robert Osbourne is awesome! He knows everything about the movies! They also have great documentries..just saw a short about the film they used and how it undermined the picture...its all very interesting. The nudity doesn't bother me personally...not too long ago I saw Julie Andrew's nana's in S.O.B.

maybe IFC (independant film channel)? They show movies uncut on there (so if you see "Pulp Fiction" on their agenda and there are kids in the room, don't turn to that channel ;)

The thing is TCM does not show their films with commerical breaks or unedited. Usually if a film is racy it will be shown later at night. And in the past few years they have been showing more films from later and current times-70's-2000's, which probably have more risque themes.

Sometimes DH will fall asleep watching IFC and I'll walk through the room and someone will yell the "F" word on that channel. I always jump because it's so unexpected. :rotfl:

IFC shows EVERYTHING except porn as far as I know.
