Now is the Best Time! Our 2024 Florida Road Trip (complete)-RL update!

I just found this TR. I remember you talking about it on the how many more days until your trip thread! Haha
How nice that your boys were able to join for a bit! My boys are similar in age. We haven’t been on vacation together since 2022. I know how special that is.
We are going to Disney in 2 weeks. I can’t wait to get the beignets at POFQ!!! My DH has never had them. I also didn’t know the Piccante pizza isn’t on the menu anymore. 😩😩😩 I can’t remember the last time we ate there it wasn’t that long ago- maybe last year. ???
So glad you found my report. It's always so awesome when our adult sons can join the trip! We had the Piccante pizza this past December so it's definitely a recent change. Have a great trip and enjoy the beignets!

Do you know when the sea turtles hatch? I thought they did around April but not sure. I know they have like tours near New Smyrna Beach to see them. I have always wanted to do this and say we are every year, but never do.
That would be a great thing to do next year!!

Oh I don't know the answer to that but it would be a great thing to look into for next year. I've never seen anything about it. Great suggestion!

Your trip sounds fantastic! But for the future reference, if you’re thinking about more road trips or visiting new places, it's smart to check out safety info. Coz even Florida can bring some unexpected surprises, and I can't say for sure that you'll like them. For instance, I always look up which city in Canada is the most dangerous before planning any trips. The site gives you the lowdown on safety in different areas, which is super helpful when picking your next destination.

Do you have a resource for that? We did look at a website that listed the unsafest cities in Florida and avoided those.

4/24 St. Pete & Clearwater Beach
For our last day in the Bradenton area, we headed to St. Pete.

Our first stop was the Boyd Hill Nature Preserve. This was a wonderful place to see all kinds of wildlife. They had several birds in cages that had been brought there for rehabilitation.

Also along various nature paths we saw all kinds of birds and other wildlife.

We saw a couple baby gators.

We saw a huge gator sunning itself.

AD_4nXfa8VRfCvB6RoheUmFq18_lq9iJfZyiOrC23H2sGtXgeEHlSmmXj8PWzPhVmlBwap2hbptwYotVHQUOXu9Mqxlrs2ASt0OQOO4TPo2Kh0NpJCxrCwu-7hwcDtl4dZqKEF0-kYr_Kk1mFLmjzODmhJyCdAiW

By the way, I did use the zoom on my phone so I wasn’t as close to this gator as it appears.

This was such a great place to walk and see wildlife. We even saw a coyote in the distance on one of the paths. We were so impressed with all the wildlife we saw we actually made a list: baby gators, big gator, coyote, tortoise, butterflies, dragonflies, squirrels, red beaked ducks, cormorants, woodpecker, great blue heron, little blue heron, egret, ibis, grackle, rehab eagle, vultures, owls, kestrel, and hawks.

After our visit to the Boyd Center, we tracked down the nearest Rita’s Italian Ice for a treat. We’ve never actually tried the Italian ice but we love the custard. We each got a cone of chocolate/vanilla twist.

Next, we headed to Clearwater and stopped by Moccasin Lake Nature Park. This nature park also rehabs birds.

AD_4nXcP54D5fAV1digRdc6ez2I5d2fQXsarJKGvnbB9NCSTaZ92pbgK3ToYwbh6pdxu8M0Rs9e0aPzozYLBrB5i0XY0Bb-Ek88OLyl-BUvdHuPeeHT-3C00t5c8-SuAIfPb0YCX4USFp0V_aO7x3Dtkro9oKXs

We walked around on the trails and boardwalks in this park as well but didn’t see too much wildlife beyond the rehabbed birds. Also, many of the boardwalks were washed out recently so we couldn’t access some areas.

We had some time to kill before our dinner reservation at Columbia Restaurant in Ybor City so we drove to see Clearwater Beach.

AD_4nXekStBHEAzuYrB3PNzJV4ofujIW9MZtEzSWY9mauH3ksLmHtIVke993_zoQ_CWpNRjLo4HwvEF86mvE7tTiJRhhtzW_sDywlKRbYW5_ENunsmTP4RFfzvxhhADzZ2Ge05yKLTIOGgMqcnQfnf4JYb1X_cUS

It was probably due to all the umbrellas and tents for rent but it seemed like a very crowded place for a beach day. After a quick stop we started our drive into Ybor City in Tampa. What we didn’t realize was that there is a Columbia Restaurant right in Clearwater but at the time we made our reservation, we didn’t know we’d be coming from there. We were in a lot of traffic as we made our way to Ybor City but made it in time.

Up next…another great meal at Columbia Restaurant, Ybor City.

4/24 Columbia Restaurant
We reached Ybor City just in time to check in for our reservation. Our meal started with their delicious fresh bread and butter.

AD_4nXcJryw-6oFUjaBUqLDYHTtQKaJz188hhBz4WNrVALc2KbYQ3fVxK0yo5ytaEN3uD4Y-TktLFs9BUy4XoCQRHFE7bNe9DPe2PUk-x3Pa4bOIo8d5wLyiqv7B-iXjWTadoc-TU4HfOG9ZVdX-yauM7vdSMlc2

We both ordered their specialty 1905 salad: Crisp iceberg lettuce with julienne of baked ham, natural Swiss cheese, tomato, olives, grated Romano cheese, Lea & Perrins ® Worcestershire sauce and our famous garlic dressing mixed tableside.

AD_4nXe0mMkhD0oHeEkt-pESVZdaLAC93wSKyqhGjgl8JJlJDk-_oek3XWWWOQ-LID3VWLqOS0Z-GmaXyRJrAUOY3sD9A-rE5ZBumEDcQIngR3jV3Z0mBHL5lOdgUt6wpB4msljC2dIj2kVupXccy9TF89tvtcpe

The flavors in this salad are simply amazing.

For our entrees, we each ordered something different from our previous visits. I ordered one of the specials, baked stuffed shrimp with yellow rice and colored carrots.

AD_4nXfqZs1ucd9aR7F1cEBgniUY5aQA4ReqpoNiPoiKkV-1ZQYcepdgSSRZ7NhFcBxRQM-0n_g6pcQC6RSS_dKFGAZZikkO024iIK3I2E-hP0OP5ypJtkoeXvd-ELVGm2-CmGf2lvEjW_uIXVVIbTydfHqlFT8r

This was extremely well prepared. The shrimp was fresh and flavorful. The yellow rice was very good. The roasted carrots were perfectly cooked and were actually my favorite part of the entire dish. My only issue was that the crabmeat in the stuffing was a bit too strong for my taste.

My DH ordered Picadillo “Criollo”: Finely ground choice lean beef, braised with onions, green peppers, olives, raisins and capers. Served with white rice and ripe plantains.

AD_4nXfOi-D_sZhugrTIGA2miZoVDpnE4rzXr6Cyn7472lZZyPrRYCKxMkmzlA_NvJdeNUlXLAefHiBGFExLfNutxzKK6jyE6ybxAXaWvfegdEBqVRdGa-BaQF7-iN14a2Isxzs7685nxl1BeFAFHjsrog-V7I0

He absolutely loved this dish. It had the perfect amount of savory with a touch of sweetness from the raisins and saltiness from the olives.

For dessert, we heard great things about the white chocolate bread pudding so we finally gave it a try. (Their key lime pie is usually our go-to dessert).

AD_4nXckAWrVOnrx7rmYwN7svMsB2GXh8AfvBoGTMv5hLeKQ8HdSbcOVwaq6BPLSw_jHIoiWiTl4fJaDNA8oh_1KvgfkYVgQO7umTFBCMaB4hap858T1nV8ied86hHYg4sKfmzfttb437z4ePAjlGFK-eTSWCJE

This bread pudding is “made with white chocolate, La Segunda Central Bakery Cuban bread, Sunny Florida Dairy milk and Florida eggs. Topped with a rich Bacardi rum sauce.” This was incredible! It was rich, sweet, and chocolatey. It definitely is in the top 5 of our favorite desserts from this trip. I could even argue it deserved the top spot but DH felt there were a few other desserts he would put ahead of it.

We love the Columbia restaurants. We’re actually so happy that there’s one located right in Celebration so that we can eat there any time we’re in the Orlando area. Definitely worth a trip off-property.

After our delicious meal, we headed back to our VRBO in Bradenton for one last night.

Total steps: 16,221

Up next...heading back to Orlando!!!!

I'm glad you weren't that close to the gators! Lol
I love Rita's Italian ice and custard!
Your meal at Columbia Restaurant sounds delicious, may have to try it in Celebration sometime. :thumbsup2

It's funny, I always re-read my post before uploading it and when I looked at the gator picture, I realized I needed to add that note...definitely looks like I'm standing right next to him!
We love the custard so much that we never try the Italian ice but my best friend says we're missing out and need to get a gelati next time.
I don't think you'll be disappointed if you try the Columbia Restaurant!

I’ve seen the Columbia restaurant in Celebration when we went to the seafood one owned by someone in New England I think. Can’t think of the name of it right now of course.
It does look delicious!

I think that’s the Celebration Town Tavern. We want to try that sometime too but probably not for New England seafood since we’re from New England. The sandwiches look great there!

4/25 Back to Orlando!
We checked out of our Bradenton VRBO, sadly never having used the pool that I paid extra for. It did look quite nice too but we were always just so busy exploring that we never made the time to swim.

We checked Waze for the best route from Bradenton back to Orlando and we were shocked to see that there was no good way to get there. The estimated travel times were over an hour longer than when we traveled out to Bradenton. So, we made the best of it and hit the road as early as we could. Since this part of our trip was unexpected bonus time in Orlando, we hadn’t made much in the way of plans. I asked DH what he wanted to do first and of course the answer was “get some beignets”. We decided to park at Disney Springs and take the boat over to Port Orleans French Quarter.

We arrived at the Orange Garage a little before 10:00 am. As we walked past Gideon’s, the owner of Gideon’s was standing against the side of the building surrounded by people with cameras and he was sharing his story with the onlookers. We looked over to see there was no line at all to go into the bakehouse. I asked a CM if there really was no line and he said “Nope. You can head on in.” We actually had no plans to stop by Gideon’s but honestly, how do you miss this opportunity?

I ordered a Peanut Butter Cold Brew but I actually received a Cookies & Cream Cold Brew. There were ground up oreo cookie crumbs all over the top and I tasted no peanut butter.

AD_4nXcY4DDSsVcq9khvbeBuZhFBiFXbi5K_qnW1hWas_YUw9_6pMuaUHtOnM_lMltVpSurn4WupYK_G8pwgghhiDWar53PMO2imPSzONGEvLKLfDwXl8zGBhFqpXe3LDwqUrtN7gm4WkU6DA_uTDUo3V0--GDSW

It was extremely sweet. I think I prefer the peanut butter cold brew but I guess it was a chance to try something new.

We took this opportunity to purchase a few treats for later in the trip, since this was likely our last stop at Gideon’s for a while. We ate everything over the next few days, but I’ll add the photos and our reviews here.

First we picked up a bag of Gideon’s Bites. That day the bites were made with the dark coffee cake cookie. I was pretty excited as we’ve never been able to buy the dark coffee cake cookie so it was a chance to finally try it in "bite" form.

AD_4nXcnzLu6Mgmz5l_8Cc59w4wb1lGNwYiGtJKV0y74b_uVV7lOF-uE_fXnn36j834rcfi1azWvIvoB1DOpByBcVgwyrbdX7zjvCQn23FK2HkCF1U-rz2N6ruCRdidS2Gd_-t8iLXTEX9PvquN_RS3EysmMx9KC

DH loved this. He’s not a fan of the cookies as he prefers them a little more baked but he loves the bites. I liked it but found it a little too sweet. I preferred the bites made with the pistachio toffee chocolate chip cookie as it had more of a salty/sweet contrast.

We also purchased a slice of the PB&J cake. We’ve never tried this one before.

AD_4nXdqFl5aXDLdx5ERgNtVHTuZ0mQ99hBVwwKUbJNo9BTjFBwCBpPquxtl_vqGilWhm6b_pNhtaWMoXGXL3IkT3uceWt2i0mSn6JALXj4efSWrAOi87SX8biNHj7aGCmnWAoAW8Z5y6JQJ0FZ2vE7uDPs-v3Q

The peanut butter frosting with the jelly was delicious. The cake unfortunately was a little too dry.
It definitely tasted like a PB&J sandwich though. We probably won’t order this one again, as the other ones we’ve tried are much better.

Lastly we purchased a slice of the Chocolate Crumb cake. DH’s favorite cake is the Pipistrello Cake and this looked a lot like that even though it had a different name. Turns out this is the Pipistrello Cake, they call it Chocolate Crumb now for clarity, I guess.

AD_4nXfmElqN2dGYE2zGNK6TR0GjMjL-OnfBbLTpdiCI5QhDdKQpeTzlLaPFadn-jLyZGrEpIxE5adSmb7N1XN-66RTuSmRfdpXeD4v7R9v1SgF5Tfl0QPHaa9rcSsdRAek9IHT90pSdm3rB9pdqtzepQhvdDKU

This cake was phenomenal as always. The chocolate cake was rich and moist and the cinnamon buttercream contrasted so well. The streusel added a nice crunch. So good! It actually secured the top spot in our rankings of desserts. I just tried to reproduce this cake for my DS-26’s birthday and I got pretty close, but not quite…

DH brought our goodies back to the car to be stored in our cooler and then we finally made our way along the Sassagoula river to POFQ for our long awaited “breakfast”.

In the interest of saving stomach space for later, we only ordered 3 beignets.

AD_4nXdaID4yFj-iWeHN_8760aBR6NcOvVpJuOnBLPNWc6bu5zkRRKkeOJzkfZMyw3wcuqr5PBJOsb0tuJVL_NH43-NWHiqlzlfjzRWA6V2QrII6jhIKXTYh_twlLlPmGfjWL4RVN_Zn861zIgUakrzky6xNxD8w

Hot, fresh and delicious as always.

Oh, and just to even it up a little, we also got one cinnamon beignet.

AD_4nXcUhqJJxiNHhFsv-eX4Nh645u_PM12Vfvv8T08reuPcQlVt8B2Drpzc7fcjeDViyz5Aht1jZrZpOolOAggV6ncB38Nd2-prbvfneCuac3lf1cy6xMdy6lIDq2S4st1o87YEPTLBWcaHP2E-xKkKmuuPATwC

This was really good too. I think we still prefer the original but the cinnamon one is a close second. After our mid-morning snack, we walked around Port Orleans for a bit and then headed back to Disney Springs.

AD_4nXf7N-z5mXMioWCo6f-Wt4Dn21bwMrl61xpwsHJ_i_WASLp-FNxkULcnCXmydUj4nagip0mcrhgdhniy_VML7tXzrIPXNb06ACViD2TugJouT57rgej4BB3pvNJu8s-Yr1Cej1yLkBSyghww4UGbiOsylNg

We stopped by the stage area and enjoyed a concert by some elementary school children. It's always fun to see the kids perform. We headed to Pizza Ponte for a mid-afernoon snack and shared two slices of pizza. The Big Roman (cheese pizza).

AD_4nXeX7WWDnsKMrEg05dXu0xHB64OYDD399AwnHdqQJDo5C8uJZW3DlFe-7pto3X_9eOEf1FFCcEhfq-_C6LgpXloVuevRPjDA0ks2dhp7gvREIfVnBFC4vix4aG-93OZxqK_F6cuGWNvA5C-J0ekQ432_zqQ4

and the Pepperoni.

AD_4nXdeXugUg31D8Z653RwvUiZQgX18Jjcbj8ltnpHeYMOwqZ7mSxUuAkwKjerDlIA9mrUbPp27Vx-ZIzKxur_bbL3lCxnB2jAFEBGwRHwIQKNTBXaN_O1_QRFcMrjkOGz1sE2BBQ4sKKajprbIA-xqodIQO3Oy

These slices were huge as evidenced by the two 9” paper plates beneath them. We really enjoy the pizza at Pizza Ponte. It’s not as good as Via Napoli but still a respectable slice of pizza. The key is to order the Big Roman or the Pepperoni since those are the most popular and you’re always guaranteed a fresh slice. We think the other flavors tend to sit out a while and sometimes aren’t as fresh. Overall, it was a tasty lunch.

After lunch, we walked over to Saratoga Springs for a look around the resort and then took the boat back to Disney Springs to await our dinner reservation at The Boathouse.

Up next…our first dinner at The Boathouse.

4/25 Dinner at The Boathouse
We stopped by the central stage again and this time there were high school students demonstrating ballroom dancing. They were so talented! It was wonderful to see young men and women performing the various routines. I don’t know which school they were from but kudos to whoever offered that program for those teens. Very cool!

Since this part of our trip was bonus time, we decided we should book ADRs at some “new to us” places. One place we’d never had dinner at (and only recently tried the dessert at) was the Boathouse. Being from New England, we don’t usually order seafood when traveling (with the exception of shrimp or salmon) so we’ve never really wanted to go to the Boathouse. However we saw a great looking turkey sandwich when we had our Key Lime pie so we decided to give it a try.

Our meal started with the delicious bread service. These rolls are soft, buttery, and tasty!

AD_4nXdUQjZxnsEeoKf_v6qTCFsbAGrpPn8UrksfOTa3QSEPgFFwRmNdsN7NfP19wMPQJ3s0i7eS_UJNWviXnHD4vcRv0mc2pD4PABNqKwJ5uaSx0X0g8667ZVWULVCs9AA5OAFTAw_c5_aAsuP_myOggBaWbTWp

We weren’t very hungry after the beignets, pizza, and rolls so we opted to share the “Yacht Club” club: Roasted Turkey Breast, Cucumber, Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato, Avocado, Chipotle Honey Mayo, Swiss Cheese, and Multigrain Bread served with Kettle Chips

AD_4nXeVS9uV0dIVNuSMtfloVImukNUj-vax6pGv-6ZTBMI0Jk7HnkQLnZfYHCa4ChzgtulIBeQjla9mewgRB6Ap86Uu7_QLp5Hm_R4f62JETROlrgLlGKrS8iRYLrhlHIoojRd2Bt7vHGsL7gTSk9KKjwKQFqU6

This was a good sandwich. It wasn’t anything memorable though. It seemed to have deli-style turkey, not sliced turkey breast that other restaurants sometimes include in their turkey sandwich. Overall, this was fine but nothing we would rush back to get again.

Since we were sharing a sandwich, we opted to get a side order of fresh cut fries.

AD_4nXdHOP2-7lDc2L4GrwovfvpeE82H7JdmIesQRHleUzEJciS37_xCUgYuENbU-WfxjU-j-p2JYFjUiKKP9q6uE5utVY3dWlJ-fXVMgsU4tr6q9kuHIQGiAdCiN5nPhn4OrzNIGseV6-ZkDHYFA3uBrrdHpd4

These fries were very good but honestly not as good as the D-Luxe Burger fries. Service was excellent again but overall this was just an “okay” meal for us. Our issue is probably that we didn't get the seafood. We’re glad we tried it but probably not rushing back, although the burger or the filet mignon sliders might be worth another visit some time.

After dinner we checked into our hotel, the Residence Inn, Flamingo Crossings. I don’t know how I possibly scored a last minute AAA Hot Deal reservation because the hotel was actually sold out. We couldn’t believe how full the parking lot was! We were assigned a great end room though on the top floor. It was huge!

I can’t wait til my DH tries he beignets next week. I’ve had them before but he never has. The cakes from Gideons look delicious.
We’ve eaten at the Boathouse a couple of times, but I can’t remember what I had. We don’t usually order seafood in Florida either- just not the same as home.

We prefer the Gideon's cakes to the cookies. So good!

OMG the last couple of updates really brought back some memories!!! Growing up we went to Siesta Key every summer. We've been to the Ringling House & Museum (toured the house, amazing!), ate at Yoder's and Olaf's was my dad's favorite ice cream shop. Definitely made me smile reading this.

We truly enjoyed the Siesta Key/Sarasota area. I can see why your family went there every summer.
