Now I'm confused (transplant question)

I know there are a few transplant recipients here so I have a question.

I've read here many times about how careful they have to be, can't be around a lot of people, wear masks when out, etc etc etc.
I was just watching last nights episode of LA Ink and a kidney/pancreas transplant recipient was on getting a (beautiful) tattoo. I would think based on what I've read here that would be a no-no.

I highly doubt the producers would let her be a featured story if it was against medical recommendations. So what's the deal?

I would guess that the person getting the tattoo had not had the transplant recently. As far as I know, all that extra precaution is just for a specific period of time after the transplant. After a while, I think they can live normally.

my mil had a kidney transplant 26 years ago and you would never know it. she is definitely careful, but no, doesn't need to wear a mask or anything like that. I can't imagine her getting a tattoo and wonder at its wisdom because of the chance of infection and how scary infections can be for transplant recipients.

I work with a heart recipient and they don't wear a mask and have no problem being around large groups. When he first had his surgery he did have to be much more careful, wear a mask for a while, avoid crowds, and so on but that was only temporary.

He will be on immunosuppressants the rest of his life and that does make him more susceptible to sickness but he doesn't let that rule his life.

I do imagine it is riskier for a transplant recipient to get a tattoo but at the same time I guess if you already faced death you are willing to take some risks. If that is what they want I say good for them.

I am a 10 year heart transplant recipient and I have 3 tattoos. One is very large. I have never had any problems or issues with them. Just as a precaution you should pick a reputable tattoo facility. I also have not worn a mask out in public or anywhere else since the first year I was transplanted. While I don't live my life too dangerously, I also refuse to live in a bubble. I was given a second chance to LIVE....I always believed that QUALITY of life is better than QUANTITY of life.
