I know airfares tend to be best-priced 2-3 months prior to travel - does anyone know when I should start really shopping (i.e., checking prices daily or every other day) for a rental car? If I can get the cost down (on an 8 day rental, econobox) to about $150 including the myriad taxes and fees, I'd rather do that than the towncar. (I typically plan dinners at resorts, and refuse to take the roundabout bus routes, so I spend a fortune on taxis.)

Hey, I'm from Dayton area too!

I don't think there's any magic formula. From my limited experience, prices do tend to drop as you get nearer, but that's assuming reservations are well short of capacity. This varies year to year as size of rental car fleets change.

If reservations reach capacity, prices can skyrocket. This is especially true during Thanksgiving week, so for that week you should try to reserve as early as you can. But even for normal weeks one hears stories of people getting good deals by reserving early and holding onto it.
