Notice anything interesting about these homecoming mums?

Well you learn a new thing everyday! I have never heard of this before, and consider myself somewhat wordly LOL! In terms of the thread title - I expected to see mothers of homecoming girls fighting over dresses or something?? The imagination is a strange and wonderful thing!!! ;)

I am from OH originally and we had mums for Homecoming but our MOM's wore them, not the students. They were always so pretty!

I love the hidden Mickey ones!

Oh, I knew it was a thread about flowers, but the whole hierarchy thing is new to me.

I grew up in Louisiana, where we definitely had decorated cushion mums for homecoming, but one was the norm, regardless of what class you were in. We also did not wear them at school -- only at the game and dance. They were not encased in long trailing ribbons, though -- they were real corsages with the usual looped ribbons at the back, and charms wired into the flower. I was in color guard in hs, and we didn't do the mums for the game because we would have shredded them. Our school color was orange, so we wore marigold wrist corsages instead -- you can move in those without ripping off the petals.

Next we can discuss the southern custom of wearing a suit and heels to the homecoming game, LOL.

PS: My Irish immigrant parents were continually aghast at the idea of wearing mums to a game event where the goal was to win. In Ireland, cushion mums are regarded as a symbol of death, and are used strictly for funerals. Displaying them in any other context is considered very bad luck. My very superstitious Dad was utterly aghast when my eldest sister received her first Homecoming corsage.

I've never heard of this either, and I come from the land of the graduation leis with stuff in them.

Are the mums real in the photo? Do they last all day/week?

Sometimes the mums are bigger than the girls who wear them!

There's a whole hierarchy in sizing, too. Freshman wear single flower mums, sophomores double, juniors triples (Mickey!!!), and seniors are the biggest.

People put all kinds of dangly charms and ribbons and sparkly things on them. Stuffed animals. Battery powered twinkle lights. There was one I saw last year that had a stuffed animal attached to a battery powered motor that rotated it in circles. The biggest ones require a harness-type contraption to wear.

It's nuts, but a fun (and expensive) part of a Texas homecoming!

I did not know this either. I swear I have seen ones w/ so many mums they go over the shoulder too. Mums coming and going!

When I was growing up it was the guy giving them to the girls, but now I think the girls do them themselves, right? Or is it just the girls w/ no dates. Hobby Lobby, Michaels and apparantly grocery stores make this quite the complicated affair.

This is very interesting to me, I have never heard about homecoming mums.
