My mom might go on vacation with us in November but won't know for a few more months so for now we are planning as if it is just our family of 5 as far as hotel room, flights, etc. I'm starting to make some of our ADRs and wondering if I just make them for our family of 5 if it would be difficult to change to 6 people in a few months. Or would it make more sense to reserve for a party of 6 and then cancel one person if she doesn't go? Thank you!

We have a similar issue - we are traveling with a group of 12, but not everyone will be at every meal. I have been booking our ADRs for the highest number of people who may be with us at each one, and plan to call and have people removed from the ressie as soon as I have the real number. I think as long as you make changes more than 24 hours in advance you'll be fine. It's easier to remove people from a reservation than it is to add more.

Adding people can cause problems. Subtracting people rarely does.

Book your ADRs for 6. When you know the actual party size, call and get the ADRs adjusted. If they can't adjust them, just show up with the 5 and let them know at the podium that only 5 will be dining with you*.

*For the CC guaranteed reservations, they explicitly state that you will not be charged if some members of your party don't show. However, it has happened, so be sure to keep an eye on your statement if you fall into that category.

**For pre-paid things like CRT, HDDR, etc, be sure to remove the extra person as you WILL be charged in those cases (or rather, you HAVE BEEN charged already ;)).
