Would anyone be against a general list or mention of the few people that truly try to rip off people during trading and otherwise?

I've been experiencing a lot of people telling me to "accept" before they even put up their share of the trade, so that they can "trust" me. Although, it is clear that they want to take your goods without giving anything.

I haven't fallen for it, but I see a lot of inexperienced and new players that do and I feel bad, because you can't fix their problem.

My son has been trading like crazy. He hasn't gotten burnt....yet. But I will warn him about that. It would be great if we had a list.

It would only make things better for the community if people were aware of who to watch out for in the game.

This gives players a safety net and we can also post names of players that might be detrimental to the game and out to ruin those who are just having fun.

Have to say that I've pretty much stopped playing. It's just not so much fun for me anymore. Seems to be a lot of 'juvenile' type behavior in there. Insulting, name calling. I loved playing when it just started but since we got back from WDW in June, things have really changed.

unfortunetly you will find a lot of that on on-line games.... :sad2:

I think this is a good idea to name and shame scammers but we have to be careful.

I know in the past my sense of humour has rubbed people the wrong way a little. Something as simple as that could see me named here.

Also it could become a place that is used for attacks on players that haven't responded to gf/bf requests favourably as I know I am getting pretty fed up with the whole "I have never met you or spoken to you but will you be my b/f" thing.

If it is a scammer list then I would suggest that the name isn't added to the final list until there are more than two confirmed reports from different sources.

Although on the whole a name/shame list is a good idea as the scammers are getting more and more and burning a lot of the new users quite badly for their magic pins.

I agree...

I may be in the minority here, but I don't think its a good idea to post names. I think warning of the latest scam is ok just so we can keep ourselves protected, but to actually list names...I don't think its really in the spirit of the Dis boards to do something like that. This is just my opinion, but I wanted to post it.

I was thinking about how great it would be to have 2 VMK's. One for teens who want to hook up and scam people and another just for the Dis!!!!!
Who's with me?

I have to agree with you. While I would hate to see anyone get burnt in a trade, I think if we are careful and use our judgement/common sense, bad trades will be kept to a minimum. I've only traded a few times (other than the RAOK things I've given away), and limited my trades to people I've made deals with beforehand from the boards. This way, I have some sort of written/verbal exchange, outside of VMK, first. I've not run into any problems (so far). I've tried to stress smart trading with my DS, who is 8 - I worry he'll be taken advantage of. He's a sweet kid, very generous and doesn't always see the big picture.

VMK is a good and fairly painless lesson on dealing with others through trading. It helps us teach kids ( and remind us) that we can use safeguards, like waiting to press accept until we are sure we like the trade. If we don't press accept, the trade CANNOT go through. It helps us teach kids that they can say no, or walk away from a trade if they don't like it.

That being said, I got burned by a trade, but that's because the transporters someone traded me wouldn't work. They weren't linked or something. But there was no way for me to know that. Lesson learned, now I'll only get transporters from a store.

Anyway, at least the kids aren't out real money, and it's fairly easy to get more credits.

As far as bad trades, or unfair trades ... well it's all in the eyes of the beholder isn't it? The invisibiltiy pin is not a big deal to me, and I wouldn't give you two credits for it, but someone else might trade you an entire room of stuff for it. Go figure, we all have our passions.

You put it exactly how I was thinking Mom2RinJen. Why do I always use 20 word when 15 will do? :goodvibes

From what I have seen most people getting caught in scams are the younger ones.

A couple of basic rules of thumb for all:

If the deal seems to good to be true, it probably is.

Unless they are a friend you know well NEVER lend anyone anything "just to try it"

Do not trade with anyone who asks you to press accept while they get the item/try it out/will give you another item later.

Hey Wolf! not all of us that have been scammed are young ones ;)

Just too trusting but not anymore Bad kid just out and out lied to me about teleporters(only got one when I asked if it was two)

I am all for a DIS only VMK :rotfl: ;)

Just so you know, when someone adds or takes away from the trade window, the boxes automatically un-check, items must be re-reviewed, and then checked again.

It's virtually impossible (barring a glitch in the system) to get scammed. The problem here is, people are clicking okay when someone is saying "Hold on, I'll go get the other item from my room then trade it to you."

NEVER EVER EVER click okay on a trade that doesn't have EVERYTHING you are expecting to get!! NEVER EVER EVER accept a trade for a "code that will be sent later" via any forum or private messaging system!

I stand corrected Maleficent2 :earsboy:

I have to say though that is a weird scam, do you think he realised? I know when I bought a batch of teleporters I had to put them all in a room and match them up. took me ages popping in and out of them. :earsboy:

There are some good points - I'll just stop wasting my time with people who want to trade unless we discussed it beforehand. As I said, I haven't been ripped off but I just feel bad for those who don't know better. But I'll still keep a list to myself of who to not even bother with.

After reading about trading scams, I was very concerned regarding a trade for my space suit. Everything looked okay on both sides, then I clicked accept. The other person then said to hold on, they were checking something. I stood at the ready to uncheck the accept button if the other person removed anything. All of a sudden, the trade window went away, and I didn't have what I was trading for. And, when I went to look for my space suit, it was gone too.

I followed the person and said (trying to be polite) that they took my stuff. He swears he didn't. I look again, this time scrolling down, and there is my space suit. The other party just rejected the whole trade.

I was so embarassed. I apologized a few times, especially since there were other people in the room who saw me accuse him. So, be very careful if you do accuse someone, because I did it, and I was wrong.

Oh I think he knew quiet well what he was doing! Little sod but that is ok I am sure he will get his sooner or later..... I can not wait to find him again when I am not playing that character he ripped off! ;)

Mal, my experience being scammed was by a guy, too. And it had to do with teleporters. I made sure he had two in the window, and asked him if they didn't work would he make them right. He said he would, but as soon as the trade was done he deleted himself off my friends list, so when I tried the teleporters, and they didn't work, I couldn't find him. I don't know what he gained by trading non-linked teleporters. He must have a set just like them somewhere, or he's trading just one to others.
I lost a set of gold ears on that one.

you can pm me for the name, but I'm not comfortable putting it on a forum IN CASE (yeah, right) it was a mistake.

Of course, he's probably using a different character by now. I did report this to VMK.
